I read somewhere that in the novelisation, the Luke and Leia training fight was actually a flash back that Leia had at the start of the film.

That seems to be the case!

A quick summary of Chapter 2 for those who are interested:
(The following happens immediately after Rey rescues BB-8 and before her conversation with Leia)

  • Hux, and Pryde are on Mustafar watching Kylo cut down Mustafarian colonists
  • (Hux and Pryde chat about how beautiful Kylo’s fighting is but is absolutely unnecessary)
  • After killing everyone, Kylo walks through Mustafar and the planet surface is described
  • Kylo approaches a pool with Vader’s castle in the background. Here he talks to the “oracle” (actually a weird and unnecessary conversation as well)
  • Oracle points Kylo toward a chest in the middle of the pool where he finds Vader’s wayfinder
  • The rest plays out as in the movie

I feel like including some establishing shots such as the ones being discussed in this thread, in addition to a matte with Vader’s castle before Kylo discovers the wayfinder would be adequate to flesh this scene out a bit. I feel like we’re on the right track given what’s being discussed!

If these posts are more annoying than helpful, let me know and I’ll stop. I just find the novel fascinating and a good source for inspiration!

I’m currently reading the novelization and since so much discussion on this thread has been about the opening of the movie, I figured I’d summarize the opening of the novel. It shifts some things around and provides a framework for how a potential fan edit could look. I’ll start with the first chapter:

  • Opens with Rey floating with rocks and reaching out to past Jedi
  • She proceeds to run the training course, but completes it without having any force visions (struggles to fight off the red training remote but due to impatience)
  • After taking down the remote she has force vision…
    • jungle fades away and (Sith) whispers fill her ears
    • First image is of Kylo Ren attacking robed figures with his lightsaber (probably the sequence we get on Mustafar)
    • Second image seems to be her standing alone in front of the monolith on Exegol
    • Flashes of Luke, Kylo, Han’s hand on Kylo’s cheek, Rey’s parents flying away from Jakku
    • Finally, a voice in her head saying “Exegol” and an image of the Sith throne, first empty and then with her
      sitting on it
    • Vision ends and Rey helps BB-8 out from under the tree

Thoughts and feelings? I like that it begins the movie with Rey and Leia and then introduces the antagonist with less obvious footage and mystery (i.e. not immediately seeing Kylo and Palpatine interact).

What’s the line again? Isn’t it like they haven’t reported back yet? Maybe doesn’t make the most sense but arguably it makes going from that scene to the Falcon feel natural (again, I’m pretty sure this is where the scene was originally placed).

Yeah, that’s basically the line. The more I think about it I guess it could still work! It feels a little like we should already know what’s happening re: the Falcon but it makes the next transition make sense.

Yeah I feel like that’s important. In a film like Star Wars you have to be careful in how you transition from storyline to storyline. How the first act of TLJ is structured is a good example to look at. Going from Palpatine to Rey right after Rey is mentioned just makes more sense in terms of flow and keeps things focused on that main conflict to start out. I only worry about how the literal transition will work (in terms of music and visuals).

Here’s hoping it will work! Based on my limited messing around, I think it’s doable.

I’ve thought about it quite a bit and I think I’m going to move the Falcon’s mission to after Rey’s intro, training, and pep talk with Leia (“Never underestimate a droid”).

This is a great idea! I made a quick personal edit and it plays pretty well. Since we haven’t been introduced to the falcon yet in this cut, I feel like it’s (unfortunately) helpful to cut out Connix’s line with Leia if you go this route.

LOVE that it transitions from Palpatine to Rey rather than the crew on the Falcon.

Sidenote: I just finished reading the screenplay for Duel of the Fates (until today I had only heard other people’s recaps) and damn, we’re definitely living in the darkest timeline. It’s by no means a masterpiece but I feel like J.J. and Terrio could have borrowed waaaaay more from it.

Sorry to get off topic; I just don’t know anyone IRL that gives a shit about this kinda stuff and I have so many emotions!

Here’s my attempt to clean up the background noise: https://mega.nz/#!bGZy2Sgb!nNUL-Fz75kM1s0M_2rzmGqhHPdttpCpQaGQ3xtloF_M

Also a version with some emulated plate reverb and a fade in the middle to minimize the remaining background noise: https://mega.nz/#!WHB2XSxD!hHFjBD_mZZQ_ZKpgPTl62xtMKZo7YCwvYFUCt_sZHsY

Wow, great work! Based on what I heard through my headphones the version with reverb makes individual words a little hard to pick out but overall it’s way cleaner! Part of me wonders if an impressionist could provide a better version of the line, but at that point you might as well just add any line you want!

I don’t follow every TROS thread so I apologize if this has already been posted elsewhere, but I’d suggest giving this a listen. Essentially it’s Ian McDiarmid saying a line from an old version of the script that pretty much confirms Palpatine is a clone. The line is: “More than a clone; less than a man.” He does it in character too, which is tight.

The audio definitely isn’t amazing, but perhaps some wizardry could be done to make it usable?

Nah, I wouldn’t remove it, I don’t think. Rose saw Finn transform into the hero she mistook him for at the start, get her medallion back, and demonstrate a willingness to give his all for the cause as her sister did.

I wouldn’t remove TROS’s kiss, neither. It’s like the only sexually charged anything the whole movie!

I see your point. Granted, I think the two kisses are wildly different in that only one of them was accompanied with sexual tension that built over multiple movies.

I’ll have to watch your edit again - maybe the removal of the “saving what we love” line paints the kiss in more of a “holy shit I almost died and I’m super fired up right now” kind of kiss.

Sorry if this was discussed before V3 was released and I missed it, but was there ever any consideration of removing Finn and Rose kissing?

If I remember correctly you had wanted to leave it in previous edits because no one knew what TROS would do with it, but now that we know that Finn and Rose definitely aren’t a thing, isn’t it kinda weird? I know Poppasketti did away with it by reworking the entire scene, but I’m wondering what your thought process was if you’re willing to elaborate!

Anyone here have the chance to read TROS: Visual Dictionary? It talks a lot about what has been happening on Exegol for the past few decades. I only read it once, but from what I remember, it’s not simply a matter of smuggling garbage onto the planet. I could type out what I remember but it would probably make the most sense for those who care to actually just read it for themselves.

V3 looks so promising! I’m definitely excited to give it a watch.

Quick suggestion: would it be worth trying to get rid of Luke’s “See ya 'round, kid” before his force projection disappears? It sets up an awesome additional encounter between Luke and Kylo (maybe a force ghost “haunting”) that they totally don’t follow through on in TROS. It’s an awesome line, but feels weird in the grand scheme of things.

Idea: ‘Heir To The Jedi’ Duology (A TFA / TLJ spitball idea thread)
Time

Oh geez, this is nuts!!! Honestly, my gut reaction was “thanks, I hate it,” but the more I think about it, the mor I’m intrigued by the idea!

I think they only way it could work (for me at least) would be if it was more of a 3-in-2 edit a la edits of The Hobbit. I’ve accepted TROS for what it is and there’s too much in it at this point that I would miss if nearly all of it was cut.

I think TROS: Ascendant could still be a conservative edit that only tries to remove the significantly offensive material, while a 3-in-2 duology has the potential to be truly radical.

I’m intrigued! The prequels could definitely do with a nice colour correction. I think you’ve got the right idea but some the colours don’t seem… accurate. Does that make sense? Definitely too much blue sometimes (as already mentioned) but other colours as well seem a little off. I wish I knew more about all of this to properly explain what I’m thinking. Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving what I’m seeing!

Keep up the good work!

I hope it’s alright I’m posting so much! I just can’t stop thinking about this movie… I’ll just continue to throw out my ideas - take 'em or leave 'em.

A recent Reddit post (I think you’ve read it) hinted at the possibility of additional locations originally existing during the lightspeed skipping. If these were released as a deleted scene, would you consider keeping the skipping? I don’t love the scene per se, but I appreciate that it’s one of very few things that wasn’t retconned from TLJ. Honestly, I’m at the point where anything that makes this trilogy seem cohesive is a positive.

Also, I don’t mind Rey mentioning the sinking fields since it’s a reference to TFA, but maybe there’s already too many references to that movie.

All of your potential V3 changes are impressive from a technical perspective! I’m just not sure if they’re all needed.

  1. I didn’t look at what the change was before watching the clip and I struggled to find out what was different. But I think in this case that’s a good thing.

  2. I don’t think this is necessary. It works but maybe it’s too on the nose? Playing off of idir_hh’s idea, I think it would be cool if the silhouettes could be altered so that it starts as one person, splits into two, and then back into one revealing Rey. It would show the significance of grandpa Palps rather than her parents, and would be one of those things that makes more sense after watching TROS. Granted, it might be too hard to achieve fx-wise.

  3. Great!

  4. I’m not sure if this can be pulled off. As other people have mentioned, 4A is the best option but it has repeated shots which are noticeable and Kylo looks in the wrong direction when he goes to look at the computer screen.

Personally I think 1, 2, and 3 would be enough foreshadowing for TROS and as much as I love the work you’ve done for 4, I’m not convinced. Amazing work though, as always!

To quote Palpatine, “please don’t!”

I’m assuming you mean “please don’t” entertain AbramPT’s suggestion? 😉

I just remember my Star Wars newbie friends being considerably confused by the reason behind Palpatine’s transformation in LOE. Also, TROS would provide some payoff now that we can finally witness the full power of force lightning redirection that was hinted at in ROTS.

Then again, maybe LOE simply isn’t the ROTS edit for me. Perhaps I’ll finally learn how to use video editing software and attempt my own micro-edits instead of trying to convince Hal to do all the hard work for me!!

Proooooobably not worth mentioning, but in light of Palpatine having his skin melted/torn off his body from force lightning at the end of ROS, would it make sense to include Palpatine being disfigured from his force lightning in LOE? I feel like there’s always been an argument over whether Palpatine was hiding his true form prior to being “lightninged” in ROTS or if he was truly disfigured from the process. ROS seems to clarify that, but maybe I’m reading into it.

Also, I know you deeply want to leave these edits alone at this point so feel free to ignore this post.
