Some day I hope to
Time
Starkiller, I lived that fantasy and I'd do it all over again. My kid was conceived on that adventure. Yes, in spite of all that rich food and dark beer I was able to sire a kid in the process too. Don't pass up the beer. While I'm not trying to convince a teetotaler to drink, it's an entirely different thing in Germany from the horse piss we drink in the states. First off, the beer there is actually good. Second, it actually makes the food better. Third, it makes you feel reeeeeeaaaallll good. Beer from the Rockies? Bah! Beer from the Alps!!!

So, what would happen if he did release the OOT on DVD?
Time
I would cry out that upgrades should be available at a fraction of the cost. Just as within the software industry, I expect digital movies, which, let's face it, they are software, should be "upgradeable." I suspect Hollywood is going to get a kick right in the profits when HD comes out, because most average watchers are going to say "I thought you said DVD was the holy grail of movie watching ... now you want me to buy this all over again?"

The software industry realized it ages ago, and made upgrade licenses available on the cheap, out of respect for the customers who forked over their hard-earned cash. It ensured that the new work got paid for, but the customer didn't feel screwed at the same time. Hollywood isn't so altruistic, and I think it's really going to bite them hard. They're going to need to do MUCH MUCH MUCH more than just higher video resolution to make HD & Blu Ray worth it to the customers. The content is going to have to be light years better than what's provided on DVD, and with some titles (Lord of the Rings for example) that'll be an insanely tall order to fill.

I go back to the issue of seamless branching. Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter ... these will need to have original/special edition content all on the same disc with tons of audio options. And the extras will need to be massive archival releases never before imagined. Everything that has been collected and passed around here would need to make it onto the Star Wars HD set to keep fans from being pissed about being asked to buy yet another retread with some new continuity-destroyer added in.

I don't suspect we'll ever see an official DVD release of the O-OT, but I actually am expecting it on HD format. And pursuant to what I said above, THAT would make me want to go out and plunk down my money again. Do it with seamless branching so the different versions are on one disc and I'll really be there singing its praises ... just so long as they don't have technical screw ups like they did on the 2004 DVD.

What's the situation with Lucas saying he "forgot" to insert Temuerra Morrison's voice into the OT?

Don't forget the grandpappy of EU, the original Zahn trilogy. The re-emergence of clones factors significantly into this story line. The principle characters were shocked at seeing clones at the helm of the old star destroyer. It wouldn't be such a shock if we had plenty of disenfranchised clones already hanging around the universe holding "will work for food" and "disabled vet" signs.

Methodology changed somewhere along the way. The spartii cloning cylinders could produce full-grown clones in months, not years.

I haven't read the novels in over a decade but I remember this quite well, and I actually put more stock in Zahn's stories than the "official canon" of the PT. Ain't that a kick in the teeth?

I always assumed you had to stay there and continue to drink to prolong your life. The Grail can't pass the seal. So if you want immortal life, you have to stay with it. That is the price of immortality.

The brothers walked out of the desert 150 years later or whatever, I think it's safe to assume they'd all stayed behind ... probably building the temple, setting up the booby traps, etc. Rome wasn't built in a day, ya know.

So Indy (and his Dad, for that matter) had one swig from the cup. That probably revitalized him and kept him from aging a day. That's all. Had they stayed behind the seal yet never drank from the cup again, they'd probably have no extension to their life span. Like most fountains of youth in literature, immortality is a double-edged sword -- granted only to those who slavishly drink from it for all eternity, addicted to it, knowing that abandoning it will mean certain death.

Just my interpretation.

Seamless branching O-OT and SE disc
Time
IMO, the OOT is a question of content. Forget Jabba and Biggs and Greedo shooting first, changing actual FX composition constitues changes. Whether or not its an updated CG shot in Yavin or re-rotoscoping lightsabers, those are material changes to the content. But cleaning up matting artifacts to me does NOT constitute a change to content.

Thus, if they were to clean up all of the matting for the sake of cleaner picture and fewer branches, I think that would be acceptable to most, but I'm only guessing ... I'd rather see some discussion from others. I figure some would always disagree, but they're probably a very, very small minority.

Color timing will be subjective and different with every different transfer, so that will always be met with some criticism. It was just so abhorrent in the 2004 DVD that it begs to be fixed. The Definitive Collection was such a painstaking restoration that they really got just about everything right that could be gotten right. The DVD was a piss-poor cash grab and time has shown it.

I sincerely hope that the Blu-Ray release will include everything but the kitchen sink. Seamless branching between O-OT, the 1997 SE, the 2004 SE, and the much rumored 2007 UE. And historical audio tracks for the original mono, stereo options, updated mixes through the years (simply lifting them from their LD masters would be a no-brainer to accomplish), and one juggernaut commentary where you get the surviving cast members to sit down and view the film together and get their banter, like a Kevin Smith commentary track.

This would not be THAT difficult for Van Ling to pull off. He's the master of seamless branching, has been since the introduction of the DVD format. Blu-Ray will take it to the next level. One disc to rule them all. ;-)

I think he's already gone on record saying in the OT, not all of the stormtroopers are clones, and certainly aren't all based off of Jango, given that he died some 25 years earlier. Given that the clones age at twice the rate, Jango's clones would be creaking around.

Unless they're making copies of copies, which could explain why OT stormtroopers aren't all that sharp compared to PT clonetroopers.

Plus, George actually is a fan of TROOPS. And we know those troopers weren't clones.

I tried to cut together a nightmarish wake-up sequence to precede the full scene in its intended place, but it just wasn't working. A series of intercuts between Lupins eye, Sirus' growling, and Ron waking up from his spider dream. It almost worked, but not quite.

Alas, you're right about the brooding being somewhat misplaced. Oh well. Maybe Harry is just playing into his purported hero complex.

Extended bird sequence is in the wrong place. It goes at the end where we actually see a piece of the end when the Whomping Williow gets the bird. Now it get's two bird at different times. What is it with double birding?

Actually, the original has both birds getting womped. If memory serves correctly, all I did was slip in the Hagrid shots into the rest of the original scene. The really nice part of the full scene is getting the full flute solo from John Williams score. It was truncated about 8 bars in the theatrical version right in the middle.

But it's in the right place, I'm sure.

Seamless branching O-OT and SE disc

What is the general thinking about a seamless branching O-OT vs SE disc? If Lucasfilm/Fox were to do this the way they did it with the Alien Quadrilogy (I hate that word) I think it would be great, but would it piss off O-OT purists? I'm thinking that junk mattes would have to be removed regardless. Would it then qualify as O-OT. I'm curious about everybody's thoughts on that matter.
