As a Carolina boy who grew up with Andy Griffith re-runs on TV every day, this really, really, really cuts deep.

I will miss Don Knotts. Like Lucille Ball before him, he was a true pioneer of TV comedy. If only the crap that is foisted on us now had a hint of the hysterical delivery of Don Knotts, be it Barney Fife or Ralph Furley. And to summarise it, here's a line from "The Mayberry Rap" which I'm quoting from memory after 20 or so years 'cause Google yeilds no hits.

I'm Deputy Fife
The Law is my life
And you can say it's in my blood
Whenever there's trouble
I'm there on the double
To NIP IT IN THE BUD!

Got a gun, never cock it
Got a bullet in my pocket
And a gal named Thelma Lou
There's Goober and Emmit
and Howard and Otis
And Floyd the Barber too (c'mon Floyd)

[recite it with me now if you know it]
Ooooo, oooooo, boy needs a haircut, oooooo
Ooooo, oooooo, boy needs a haircut, oooooo

THE FIRST SECRET THAT WE WILL IMPART UNTO YOU IS...

42 !!!

I've found the ultimate question: What is the regulation weight of a rock in Curling?

IT'S 42.

The computer of Earth has finally provided the ultimate question to the ultimate answer. It was about curling all along.

Does this mean the Scots are smarter than the mice?

Was it you or one of your trailer-roomies who said "I feel cheated: I lived in this shithole for a year and didn't see Elvis or a UFO!" ?

Three years -- yep that was my roomie, not me. Our bathroom floor was rotted out for the last six months and we didn't even bother the landlord to fix it until we were gone. I don't know which was better ... there were the holes all over the ceiling from him trying to shoot a cockroach with a bb gun while drunk, and there was the chip in the bottom of the toilet bowl from the same ... it richocheted back up his nose.

But I'm pulling the thread off-topic. I should start a trailer park discussion thread.

You musicians will probably like to know that Satriani is putting out a new album. I think I read on his site he's putting together another G3 tour and Eric Johnson will be on it again. Maybe as the "Fourth" opening act, but still ...

The U.S. also has a female bobsledder, Vonetta Flowers, who took Gold in Salt Lake City four years ago. She was actually the first black athelete in world history to medal at the Olympics. She returned to Torino to defend, coming in fourth.

And might we add one of the best Olympics movies is about the 1988 Jamaican Bobsled team.

Bryant Gumbel is just sore because (a) he used to work for NBC and they're covering this while he's stuck at home, and (b) Bob Costas, his fellow "sportscaster" at HBO, is also the "anchorman" of the games for NBC.

All together now: "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Incidentally, I think Shani actually silvered in the 1500m. The Italians got gold. But the point is, yes there are a few really good black atheletes in cold-weather sports, just like there are a few good white atheletes in football, basketball and track. To say nothing of the Asians who are kicking ass all over the figure skating rink this year.

We've seen "Black Oil" on The X-Files and when we saw Braniac this season on Smallville, he shape-shifted and moved in a black oil form. Greencapt is spot on ... don't overcomplicate the issue. Throw in the technology being developed from some alien source (say, materials brought back from John Jameson's moon walk referred to in Spidey 2) and you've got it.

Or even simpler, just a meteorite hitting NYC and Eddie Brock being at ground zero. No mad-scientist plot needed.

Edit: Or Spidey showing up at the scene, getting "taken over" by the symbiote ... and that's all. No deep alien plot, but still respectful to the otherworldly origins of Venom.

I always kept my mullet in a Geoff Tate-style ponytail or a Neil Peart-style braid. Female fans dug it. Dad hated it. Then one year I cut it off on Christmas Eve and gave it to him as a present. I have NEVER put such a genuine smile on the man's face before or since. Best gift ever.

I've got so much redneck stuff in my past that freaks my wife out every time she hears an old one or learns a new one. Mullet? Check. Tobacco and snuff chewing? Check. Lived in a nasty-ass trailer park for a while? Check.

I wasn't raised that way, it was a phase. Fortunately the accent seems to be all-gone now.
