The Da Vinci Code Movie

Getting labeled Heretical by the Vatican was the best thing they could have done for promoting the film. The Vatican continues to adhere to tactics from the Dark Ages, rather than recognizing how the world has changed. 1000 years ago, if the papacy called it heresy, you avoided it for fear of damnation. Now, it's like a double-dog dare from the 80-year-old virgin (who wears a big hat).

Why I'm not so worried anymore

What was said above about aspect ratio is the key. Assuming an anamorphic transfer, movies that were shot in a 1:85:1 aspect ratio like Batman, Jurassic Park, Silence of the Lambs and, IIRC, BTTF should present no black bars. Maybe a smidgeon, as 16:9 = 1:78:1. But still, very little on the whole.

Meanwhile movies shot in 2.35:1 like Star Wars & LOTR will still have black bars. Just not as much as on a 4:3 TV.

Ben-Hur is even wider, so it will have thicker black bars in order to present the whole image.

On the other hand, Full Frame classics like Snow White and The Wizard of Oz were shot in 4:3 so they will actually give you black bars on the left and right while filling the vertical dimension to the top.

The Da Vinci Code Movie
Time
Tom Hanks had a great line in the film that wasn't in the book. Something to the effect of "How does any of this change the Divinity of Jesus?"

Bingo. Hit the nail on the head right there. I know of no way that this story undercuts Jesus the Man, Jesus the Son of God, Jesus the Prophet, or Jesus the Rabbi. It does not claim anything about the man was false. Its greatest heresy is proclaiming the Catholic Church knew things about Jesus that it kept from the masses.

As if they haven't done that anyway.

I heartily recommend two comedies for you all in the vein of The Da Vinci Code: Dogma and Hudson Hawk. Go watch these two movies and tell me Dan Brown didn't take more from these films than he did from Baigent & Leigh's research. At least they got cited.

Jay, your response inspired my latest thought on the issue of owning the LDs and what rights they protect. I made the response in "The Official Lucasfilm Response" thread to Harlock, but it came right after reading your statement here.

For me, with no official O-OT source, the DVD is probably the best legal protection I'll have on owning the X0 project. For you, you've already got the LD, so owning the DVD would be completely redundant since they've done nothing to enhance the picture or sound. (In fact, they've compressed both.)

I've really gotten my brain working overtime on the issue. Today would be a good day to have gone into law.

The Reason the OOT was released

I agree, Harlock, and I'm glad you brought the issue up.

For those of you who have the '93 Laserdiscs, I see positively no reason to purchase the DVD. You already have an official version struck from the exact same master. Having an LD -> DVD project is nothing more than an archive of material you own so my statement above applies in your case as well. If you aren't selling rips, and you shelled out friggin $250 for the Definitive Collection set, you've made a nice payment towards that Star Wars license.

It would be an interesting legal argument that you'd probably lose if you had a pirate of the official O-OT DVD as your archive, but even that would make an interesting case that has yet to be tried. I think you'd actually be in clearer territory just owning the X0 project or whatever as the definitive archive of your LDs.

Disclaimer: I'm no lawyer, so none of my statements are legal advice. Just legal speculation.

The Official Lucasfilm Response

Lucasfilm truly did not expect or intend to create such a fervor about the original versions' DVD releases, Singh said.

This is the best statement of all. Lucasfilm is singlehandedly responsible for creating all of the audio-videophiles, thanks to THX's brilliant marketing in the 90s. If DVD was the technology that got your Average Joe into Widescreen presentation and surround sound, it was preceded by that good ol' THX trailer blowing anybody away the first time they saw it.

Lucasfilm created this monster. Now they're seeing how angry the monster gets when you poke it in the eye.

Unfortunately, this is the wrong attitude. This condones piracy and bootlegging, which is counterproductive to the goal of a legitimate, proper transfer of the unmolested trilogy -- not to mention it puts your personal liberty in jeopardy. This release completely puts LD projects on the black market. If you were to purchase or even trade for a bootleg from a sting operation or a monitored source, your only defense will be ownership of the official version.

If you are not selling an alternate treatment, and if you've purchased the only official treatment available, they can try to charge you or sue you, but they'll find it damn hard to get a sympathetic jury. You'd have the best defense possible: "I purchased the real thing. I wasn't selling illegal copies. So where is the crime?"

"Lucas is an asshole and I want to steal back from him" unfortunately is not an airtight defense. It's merely a point of view that does not respect the rule of law.

Try to take it easy with the Lucas bashing.

I don't wish him death. I wish him enlightenment. I'm looking forward to actually buying this piss-poor DVD, knowing (a) my 4:3 TV will display it just fine and that (b) it will give me the legal excuse to have the X0 project, seeing as how they're both derived from the same master. The official one should be fine until X0 gets into my hands.

Meanwhile, I hope GL continues to entertain me with his 3D editions, his Archival Editions, and I especially look forward to when he officially releases the ADM editions as his official vision.

This really is a catch-22. If we buy the DVD's for our beloved OOT, then we continue to line Lucas' pocket, and further down the line he'll pull a "cleaned up, extra channels, remastered super-duper 30th anniversary (or whatever anniversary) edition" and then if we don't buy them out of protest, then he'll feel vindicated. "See, I told you nobody wanted these original versions!" I'm at a lost for what to do in that regard. I do have LD transfers, and I'm happy with them, but I wouldn't mind 'official' versions.

I guarantee you this is no accident.

Sorry, MeBe isn't here right now. He's busy running his own business (video conversion wouldn'tcha know) and taking care of his wife and kids. You probably won't experience in your lifetime what he's been through in the first third of his. But don't worry, he'll be back shortly. 'Cause he actually means something to this community.

You, on the other hand, need to actually use the other hand once in a while. Might give you a different perspective on life.

P.S. I just ran the math and MeBe averages 3.4 posts a day. Yours is more than five times that. If post count = nerdiness, you win, hands down.

Jenny, you're doing the right thing. Just because LFL does the wrong thing doesn't mean we all should to. And just like the official SE, the official O-OT will sit untouched in my collection while I watch my own SE edit or while I watch the X0 project. If they try to sue, I can say "for what? I bought it, and I'm not pirating it."
