SUPERMAN RETURNS REVIEW
Time
I noticed something rather funny in SR that I wonder if anybody else picked up on. When the Daily Planet had its TVs on to the different news reports from around the world, there was a shot of the Eiffel Tower that I could swear came from Superman II. Stamped on the image was "Amateur Footage." This could have been a deliberate dig at Richard Lester. Did anybody else pick up on that?

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. I've considered re-editing Temple of Doom but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Man, I hope for a Superman Returns Sequel. We've already got a good plot line established and I wanna see how things turn out with the whole love triangle and *spoiler wisper* Upermansay onsay.

For as bad as people are bad mouthing this movie, 75% of the critic reviews have been good. You have to remember that this movie is battling 5 fronts:
1) Bring back to life a dead franchise
2) Remove the stink of the last suck-tacular films that were splashed all over the good name of Superman
3) Bring back the fans of the old movies
4) Bring in new fans to the Superman story (I fall under this one)
5) And to top it all off, this movie is not "Superman Begins." They had to start in the middle of an already developed story and take it from there. Unlike Batman, some doors and options were no longer open to suggestion. Superman had to work with what he was given in Superman II.

And I think it was wonderful. When my cousins come to visit, I might see it a 3rd time. I love it that much.

I'm working on my niece's education by letting her watch I and II, then I hope to take her to Returns. I think she's more excited about Pirates 2 though. *sigh*

I wish my own son was old enough but he isn't. But I'm having a hard enough time trying to convince my wife that he's ready to see The Wizard of Oz. I really look forward to the day that he and I take trips to the theatre to see more than animated fluff. Seeing Star Wars and Superman in their initial theatrical runs with my family is a fond memory and I hope my own son enjoys the movies as much. In this day of commercials, cell phones and rude audiences, I wonder if he'll even care.

The Official Lucasfilm Response

That's it in a nutshell. But his notion is dead wrong. Because his "perfectionism" has caused people to actually hate Star Wars when they didn't before. Immaculate CG does not tell a story. His ability to tell a story has diminished, and he's screwed up the ones that didn't need fixing in the first place. He's changing history because he can. He's mucking up his stories because he can. He's holding out on the very people who made him what he is because he can.

C-3PO or Han Solo would call it delusions of grandeur, but I have one word to describe his entire attitude: Megalomania.

Yes, but you have to take that in context. Lois has been abandoned for 5 years. Superman wasn't there to save her anymore (and lordy, did she need saving during those early movies) so she had to put on the "tough girl face" just to survive.
Not to crap on anyone's childhood, but I hated the Kidder Lois. She screamed ALL the time. I mean, when I rented the first movie my aunt turned to me and said "She's a screamer, isn't she." Oye. Lois really didn't do anything for me. And don't get me started about the "musical number" that when on when Superman takes her for a ride...

For some real obnoxious screaming heroine action, check out Kim Basinger in Batman (if you've done so already, do it again). The favorite Bat-flick of many is totally ruined for me in the second hour by a woman who screams at every possible turn. One who apparently photographed dead bodies on the front lines of war.

I was born in 1983. I didn't really grow up with Superman at all. This new movie may be as important to me as the original 1978 movie is to some of you older fans.

One detractor of sorts: During the whole film, I kept thinking Parker Posey should've been cast as Lois. If anybody could have played Margot Kidder's Lois, it was her. When the answer is staring at a casting director like that, I'm surprised when it doesn't get seen. This isn't a slam on Kate Bosworth, who did a better job than I expected. But her Lois was so toned down compared to Loises of recent memory.

That movie was called Batman Begins.

Superman Returns was damn good fun too, but not in the same league with BB. I'm happy to say that I really did enjoy SR and I think they did capture the spirit of the Christopher Reeve era. I'm eternally grateful that this was not a Jon Peters production of a McG film.

I saw it in IMAX, and was a little annoyed as a result. Despite what you've heard about the new 2D->3D conversion, there is plenty of double-imaging to induce headache. Of course, I was on the next-to-the-front row and had to crane my neck upwards the whole time. Maybe it's better if you're rear and center.

IMAX did, in the opening credits, make me feel like that same six-year-old boy who saw Superman: The Movie on opening day. For that portion of the movie alone I did feel like a kid again, and neither the prequels nor Batman Begins brought back that feeling. This was the first time in a long time I felt like a kid at the theatres.

I can't figure why this one got a PG-13. I didn't see any headbutting or bloodletting, didn't hear any cursing, nookie was only implied ... I think this flick got hosed on the rating. It's not appropriate for a 3-year old, but I think an 8 year old can handle it just fine.

Long story short, I agree with DAYV's review go see it. But let me add that IMAX isn't a necessity.

Is Dune a good movie?
Time
The theatrical cut is a David Lynch film.
The extended cut is an Alan Smithee film. They seriously screwed up some FX shots that was his real bone of contention with the EE.

There is a miniseries produced by the SciFi channel that is slavishly faithful to the book. Mostly set against CGI, this isn't as well acted, but is certainly a good watch at least once. But the Lynch/Smithee film merit rewatching like any great cult sci-fi piece.

The recent attention I've given the film reminded me how damn good it really is. Weird, but good. Brilliantly acted by everybody (except maybe Alicia Witt) and directed within an inch of its life. Not to toot my own horn, but if you're going to bother, pick up Fan Filtration's version or my own, as they both correct the worst of the EE flaws. (I haven't seen FF's version yet, but I'm pretty confident in his edit from what I've read.) If the film was worth it to not one but two of us to re-work, that is a testament unto itself.

How do I get people to like me?
Time
1) Read both the lyrics and prose of Neil Peart (of Rush) and commit it to your heart. Look at the ups and downs of his life and draw from his drive to keep going.
2) Learn a musical instrument and pour your soul into writing songs.
3) Remind yourself daily that this is a pretty big world and the petty shit that transpires in school absolutely, positively will not matter the moment you graduate.
4) Listen. Don't wallow in your own thoughts while others speak, but condition yourself to be receptive to what others are saying at all times. The more you listen, the more you will empathize. The more you empathize, the greater your sense of purpose in the greater whole of society will be.
5) Spend less time online and more with real person-to-person interaction. But choose those people wisely.

I was in your shoes 20 years ago, in a time when doctors didn't hand out psychoactive drugs to minors like sweet tarts. I learned bona fide coping skills. Without revealing the intimate details of my life, the zit-faced, do-gooding 98-pound weakling who was terrorized by the cool kids for most of his grade school life is now a (knock on wood) successful businessman with a great home, a loving wife and child, a couple of satisfying hobbies, and time enough to hang here with you folks.

I don't think about my hometown much, nor do I dwell on my past. The day I left home for college, none of the crap was relevant any more. Only the academic and people skills I'd learned on the way.

This was to fit Lucas' original creative intention of having Vader's Shuttle miraculously land on the Death Star where Moff Jerjerrod was awaiting to take him to the bridge of the Executor.

Confused yet? I have been for nine years.

Apparently Lucas thought we were all confused when Vader "magically" arrived at the executor. Apparently we couldn't understand why he said "Bring My Shuttle."
