I found out something really interesting about TMPGEnc ... it will read .avs scripts so you don't have to do the extra step of converting to AVI first. Lots of time wasted in the past has been saved on my upconvert.

Before you start, get the latest Gordian Knot rippack from Doom9.

Do this:
1) Open up DVD Decrypter. Change mode to IFO.
2) demux the audio and the english ac3 file as separate streams. Unless you're doing something custom to the AC3 file (as I did) just leave it alone and re-mux it with the changed file.
3) Using the latest rippack of Gordian Knot, launch dgindex.
4) File/Open/the M2V file you demuxed. Click OK.
5) Save the D2V file. Go do situps for about five minutes. When it is done saving:
6) Launch the actual Gordian Knot program. Click the "open" button in the lower left corner. Point it to the .D2V file you created above.
7) Click "Save and Encode" ... this will bring up another window ... just hit SAVE (not Save & Encode) on this window. This will create an AVS file. That's just a simple text file that you'll edit with notepad. Close Gordian Knot.
8) Open the AVS file. Change the line with the crop command to this:
crop(0,0,720,480)
and change the line with the Lanczos resize to this:
Lanczos4Resize(720, 480)
Save the file.
9) Launch TMPGEnc. Select at 16:9 NTSC project. Load the modified .AVS file into it. Set the Average Video Bitrate to 8000. We'll recompress after muxing, but this will ensure the best quality recompress from the source file to the anamorphic file. This will create a new M2V file and a WAV file. The wave file will be empty junk you'll delete when you're done.
Let this run overnight.
10) Load the new M2V file, the original AC3 file, the chapter points, and the subtitles (see my earlier post for the ones from ANH so you don't have to rip them) into DVDLab Pro. I think you know what to do from here. If the result is larger than a DVD-DL, you can use Nero to recompress to DL or SL. With the AC3, you may not need to recompress.

I know you can do this. Let me know if you have any questions about any of these specifics.

The delay number was zero on the GOUT (at least, it is on SW -- haven't done the others yet). Plus, the first subtitle was in sync, but the rest weren't. I haven't really investigated why yet (or compared to the original to see if the problem is there) as I'm focused on just getting it done. I'll try to do a little more research to figure out what's going on.

PAL, eh. Time wasted, lesson learned. I was hoping to help out Belbucus by providing him the '85 mix ready to go.

Oh well. Back to the drawing board. I've created a custom mix from the GOUT AC3 file (again, I was surprised at it's quality given its bitrate) and have mixed in the four dialogue lines that were restored in the 2004 edition ("We've stopped," "There's no one here," "Tractor Beam" and "Close The Blast Doors." I don't know if the first two were present in any mix, but the first certainly was from the same take as it's surrounding lines. Above all else, I like them.

I've also extrapolated the mix to 5.0 using the Doom9 guide (I wish I new how to steer the LFE frequencies to that channel). I'm going to mix this down to 5.1 at 448 bitrate and see which I like better ... this pseudo surround mix based on the original dolby, or just a PCM mix.

I've got the video upsized to anamorphic, but I don't have widescreen equipment so for now, that's only anecdotal.

Belbucus, will your mix be from PAL or NTSC?

Here's what I mean by Headroom. ... I think that I'm using it correctly. Quite simply, by looking at the waveform of the converted file, it looks far less compressed (i.e. dynamic range, not file compression) and is normalized to the proper peak levels. Typically in ac3 file compression, the first thing to go is the volume. I think I'm still hearing compression artifacts in some of the louder spots, but it's not what I'd expect for 192.

Meanwhile, I'm still puzzled over the PCM file lengths.

For ANH, the delay value is zero. At least, according to my NTSC rip. I haven't yet tried ESB or ROTJ but I expect the same.

Other news: I converted the 2CH AC3 to WAV with PX3 converter and saw there was substantially more headroom in this file than the '85 PCM. This surprised the hell out of me, but there it is.

Are the seventiesfilmnut files PAL or NTSC? I have them courtesy of Darth Mallwalker and was trying to get them synchronized to the NTSC GOUT, but it doesn't work. When I synchronize threepio's first line, then by the end of side one ("We will then crush the rebellion ...") it is out considerably. I time-stretched the file so that the first and last lines are both in synch, but the middle of Side One is somhow still way off. With the beginning and end in sync, I'm at a loss to understand why the middle would go out of whack like that.

Any ideas?
