MagnoliaFan Edits: Ep I "Balance Of The Force", and Ep II "The Clone War" (Released)

Don't know of any alternatives, but you could do a set. I found those subtitles so perfect that I didn't want to touch them. You could, of course. I recommend using SubRip to OCR the subtitle files into Text. Then you can edit the text and re-generate using the method of your choice. Jar Jar's speech before the senate is so damn good in TCW.

Thought on de-SE'ing the DVD
Time
My frustration level with Combustion has completely disheartened me at this point. Such a good product, but the demo leaves the final product useless, and the $$$ is too much for me to bear to fix one shot on one film (the green saber shot) -- so if you are adept with Combustion and have the time to help (I know many of you don't have the time and I understand) here's what I need help with

1) The source video is here and is in M2V format with a .mpg extension. That's the format it needs to come back in.

2) As we determined earlier in the thread, the saber needs to have a travelling matte that follows it, and all that needs to be done is to have the color re-wired to this config:

R <- R
G <- Y
B <- G

The only potential problem is in the couple of frames where the training remote crosses in front of the saber. No idea if the rewiring will noticibly change the remote. Otherwise, it should be a fairly straightforward fix.

Anyway, I know many of you are knee-deep in other project, but any help from you video geniuses would be great.

Hunter S. Thompson commits suicide

Sean, you must listen to Alan Handleman, as you took the words out of my mouth. Official cause of death was a self-inflicted shotgun blast, but there was a lot of curiosity about how Cobain died. I ran a two part piece on the very issue. I may even have all my old notes somewhere in storage, but that was a decade ago. Courtney Love's lawyers threatened to shut down my paper. Given that it was a student paper on a state-owned campus, that would have been pretty funny to watch them try. A lot of blustering as nothing ever came of it.

Another great musician/songwriter who gave up hope on himself was Chet Baker. 40's jazz trumpeter if memory serves correctly. Check out the song "Chet Baker's Unsung Swan Song" by David Wilcox. Awesome song trying to imagine the last moments of Chet Baker's life.

Sequels that should never be...

The only thing that can save us from Toy Story 3 is if they release it straight-to-video like they do with everything else at the Mouse House. Yeah, it'll still be out there, but nobody will care. After all, we didn't need Mulan II (or I for that matter) but nobody is even wasting the breath on it since it's straight-to-video.

<prediction tongue="in-cheek">
If TS3 does get released, Generation Y will create its own set of forums called OriginalToyStory.com (That's OTS.com for short) and complain about how Disney raped their childhood. Jimb0 will likely join that board and clutter it up in defense of Eisner's creative decisions for the past decade. DanielB, who has never edited a spec of video, will come on and complain about how the second issue of "bloopers" and the digital remastering for the Toy Story 2 DVD are heresy because they destroyed the entire vibe of its theatrical release. Then he'll tell everybody how they can restore it and improve upon it. Then he'll dump all over Toy Story 3, and though they'll agree with his analysis, he'll already be hated by the entire community and be told to F' Off.

Interestingly, this is part of the direction both Brosnan and Dalton wanted to take the franchise, but the Broccoli's aways dork towards the gadgets after one attempted "return to form." They're more concerned with preserving the formula than actually going somewhere with the franchise.

If I could only get the Broccoli's to return my calls and read my treatment I could actually fix a lot of what has come unglued in the franchise. But that's just wishful thinking.

Meanwhile, I'm not holding my breath that they're going to improve the franchise in the next outing. But I'll probably still enjoy the film as decent popcorn-munching fare.

The obligatory list, fave to least fave:

Goldfinger (Is there any other choice?)
From Russia With Love
Thunderball
Tomorrow Never Dies (best-developed and best-cast female characters in the entire series)
Goldeneye (best chase ever!)
For Your Eyes Only
Licence to Kill (best reference to his dead wife)
Dr. No
You Only Live Twice
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (Best ending ever ... if only Connery had done this one, what a movie it would have been).
The Man With The Golden Gun (Best villian ever, worst henchman ever)
The Spy Who Loved Me (great movie, awful soundtrack)
The Living Daylights (ditto. Ah-Hah? WTF were they thinking???)
Never Say Never Again (I do count this one)
Diamonds Are Forever (Redheads are forever!)
Octopussy
Die Another Day
A View To A Kill
The World Is Not Enough (Denise Richards singlehandedly ruins what could have been a perfect Bond film)
Moonraker (Did they even READ the book?)
Live and Let Die (Bond is NOT Shaft!)

Info: Restoration for DVD release of Bambi
Time
To further bring this into topic, is the Bambi release integrating the restoration credits into the original credits? Or are they tacked on as a supplement at the end. JC did this with T2 and I think it is a much wiser approach than changing the credits. Special restoration credits are very vital to show the hard work that restorationists put into their work, but by their very nature they should appear as a supplement.

The SWSEs, by comparison, changed the credits substantially, just as they changed the films.

Having now read almost all of Fleming's books in order (I'm currently in OHMSS) I can say unequivocally that Dalton actually came closer to capturing the true essence of Bond than anybody, including Connery. Connery remains my favorite, but Dalton captured the lethal seriousness of Bond better than anybody, and it was no accident. The supplements on The Living Daylights confirm how he really wanted to get back to the roots of the character, taking unused plot points from the novels and showing some of Bond's vulnerability. This, of course, built upon where director John Glen had been trying to take the franchise in the 80's. The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker were so over-the-top fanciful, that they had to take Bond back down to earth. They successfully did this on For Your Eyes Only, but started slipping back to the fanciful again with Octopussy and AVTAK. This was more of Broccoli's decision than Glen's.

Dalton was in the unfortunate position of being chosen second. Pierce had already been announced as the next Bond and was a household name, thanks to Remington Steele. People wanted him as Bond. Then NBC screwed him (twice) and Dalton became the next Bond. (Side note: Dalton was actually in the running 15 years earlier when Moore landed the part). A serious actor, he tried to take the character back to its serious roots. People didn't like the cold Bond as much at the time, and box office returns for Licence to Kill proved it. MGM went into bankruptcy for other reasons, Bond was put on hold for six years, Dalton decided not to return, Pierce was available, and the franchise was jump-started in the 90's.

In the world of "what might have been," had a bond movie been made in 91, Dalton would have played the part, and it is possible he could have surpassed the hurdle of "Licence to Kill" in a time when the cold war was ending. The perception of his films improved with age.

I'm most interested in where the franchise is going now. Martin Campbell is back in the director's chair. Casino Royale is finally being adapted properly. Sony now controls the Eon productions as well as the "McClory" offshoot. Pierce is out. Christian Bale hedged his bet on Batman, knowing it would cost him a real shot at playing Bond. People are talking more about Clive Owen (including the man himself) as taking over the role, but the producers apparently are leaning more towards Ioan Gruffud (Mr. Fantastic) so it's anybody's guess. Clive I think could get the character closer to Connery's incarnation than anybody, but the producers tend to get the "first" choice always about 10 years too late. That happened with Moore, with Dalton and with Brosnan as the record shows.

STAR WARS: The Torrents thread

Though that isn't 100% true, it would make the case much harder to prosecute. You'd actually be better protected if you had a laserdisc than if you had a copy of the DVD. Since the majority of the OT backups are from laserdisc, you could easily argue that you have an archival copy.
