Incredible !

I suscribed to this forum once to share my work here, with people - as I already said - who has already paid, and don't want to pay more for having those scores in a descent shape.

But if there's one thing I haven't subscribed for, it is to feed those supermarket places ! I yet don't like it when they're free, but what to think when they're not !

I see the source of the download is from the SW alt bin. and I don't think this one sells anything. I just don't understand why one should pay this other site for sucking from the Alt bin group then. Besides, I also saw the "Audiophile Edition" is available through this... thing.

... My jaw falls.

Anyway, that gives me reason on something: if you don't want to "share", you're gonna pay.

Thanks for the explanations.

PS: Any thoughts from anyone about that is welcome.

The Empire Strikes Back IMPERIAL "AUDIOPHILE" EDITION - Restored & Remastered Score - J. Williams & LSO (Released)
Time

- Check here the previous remixing/editing details (version 1)-

...What's new since:

 • EQ's: mostly 1993 sessions mixes tracks, using a 20Khz parametric equalizer to manage the 20Khz tone that is particular to these. Overall, the CD3 from the AE has been the main reference for new EQs. A lot of tracks from it then replace the previous CD1 & 2 ones.
 • Pitch corrections: 5M4/6M1; 6M3; 7M3; 9M4 + 1M2 Alt this one checked against the 1980 film mix)
 • Balance adjustment on a few tracks
 • New source occasionnaly used for enhancement: the NPR Radio Drama for 6M3; 10M1
 • Redone tracks: 6M2 (uses the film mix instead of the SE remix); 9M4, 1M2 Alt.
 • Editing: checked and corrected when needed against J Williams piano sketches manuscript (scoring sheets).
 • Other improvements: notably 8M2, bringing back the background details (xylophone(?) harmonics) from the sessions mix during Luke's vision passage.

+ A few other details.

The Empire Strikes Back IMPERIAL "AUDIOPHILE" EDITION - Restored & Remastered Score - J. Williams & LSO (Released)

This project is an updgrade on many points of the previous “Audiophile Edition”. It is my definitive set & fix.

<span style=“text-decoration: underline;”>© Copyrighted material: You must own the Empire Strikes Back original motion picture soundtrack Special Edition if you mean to keep for yourselves a copy of the entire project presented here. If you own any other releases of this score, then you may select and keep for yourselves the material in common from the actual set.

 • Project: multiple sources remixing, restoration and remastering.
 • Sources: 1980-1985 RSO/PolyGram (LPs & CD), 1993 Arista Anthology, 1997 RCA Special Edition, 1983 NPR Radio Drama.

... when to stop equalizing (?) ...

Oh, and for the record: After hours of carefuly done alt mixings to listen for selection (not mentionning the earlier versions), this is where stopped the equalization.

Only a few tracks, notably half of the RSO CD were found in less than ten minutes, though I may have done further tries that were finally useless.

The IE DVD provides the definitive fixing though, as I explained before.

PS: yeah, mp3s... weird idea.

PPS: There were a couple of very easy fixes I made for the IE. For exemple and ss "Hyperspace" is one of your favorite tracks, you may want to have it sound at its best... Just lift the left channel of 0,5db on CD3 version (CD2 rather need to manage this on lowering the right), and you'll know what I mean. ;)

J. Williams & LSO, The EMPIRE STRIKES BACK AUDIOPHILE EDITION - Restored & Remastered Score (Released)
Time

Currently I only downloaded the 3rd disc to get an overview of the work done. The files I put on my Cowon S9, and plugged in my Sennheiser Headphones.

Cowon S9 ? Does it mean you listened to this as mp3's ?... Just curious.

Most of the cuts are invisible, only one cut (at the end of Jedi Master, Mynock Cave) was a bit abrupt.

Yes, the "clack", I see. As far as I remember the SE has the same. I fixed it in the same time than correcting the pitch on the RSO parts. You can hear the complete version in the "Imperial Edition", or grab the Mynock sequence as a sample in the IE thread.

For comparison I used the Anthology versions and especially compared my favourite tracks "Hyperspace" and "Lukes first Crash". Both of them got a much clearer instrument seperation. Also some noticable volume changes were done, especially in "Lukes first Crash".

... Hard to compare LPs versions with the Anthology. Only 40 sec on the 1st minute of Luke's First Crash is a pure Anthology part.

It would be very interesting to get to know what was the ideal ABC had in mind, to know how ABC decided what kind of sound is to be achieved and when to stop equalizing ... Any inputs on this, dear ABC?

I presented 4 versions before on these boards. They were in good shape but they weren't called "Audiophile Edition" but "Optimum". Only it occured when I decided the "Optimum" finished, that I just had a declic about how it should really sound depending on the source recordings. Also I understood what was to be taken into consideration (see post 1). If you want to name my ideal for this work then, perhaps I'd think "respect" towards all the particularities of the different sources.

As you said, all my concern was to get those tracks to sound the more natural as possible. All those recordings are rather limited in order to do that and the more I tried to make these powerful in the past, the more it revealed to be the wrong way. Funnily, they look somehow more dynamic to me now, I think.

Anyway, I will download the other 2 CDs very soon and only expect the best. Soon this set will shine in my soundtrack collection.

If you began by CD3, you've already heard the best (excepted for the "Imperial March" I think). However you may be surprised by what some of the Anthology and SE tracks can give, though I messed up with a couple (CD2, tracks 4 & 6 notably).

But my best effort remains on the Imperial Edition, no matter what. There has been a lot of corrections I already summed up on the previous page here + notably the use of a 20Khz parametric EQ to deal with most of the Anthology tracks. And notably, the "IE" focuses on the CD3 slight alternate equalizations (for a big half of tracks), less bright, just what it needs.

Every one who saw that DVD may tell you how much "Drawing The Battle Lines" or "Carbon Freeze" sound great now. But they will sound good already on the AE.

Thanks.

Just sharing that thought, perhaps some haven't seen that this way:

I never noticed, until seeying this in B&W with the creepy music that the trap of Vader ended in a spider web (the carbon freeze set)! I always wondered why we couldn't see the end of this unrealistic set... Simply amazing ! :)

The only thing I disagree with, and not a concern with the AE, is the use of tracks that were not performed by the LSO and John Williams for the films.

Yes, of course. That's why I dropped what I had on the OE. But i's been a time I thought the film edit of "snowspeeder" had no interest.

The complete vesion Of Mynock Cave from the SE is of no more interest besides, considering the new one I've been able to make (see the IE DVD), and the "Rebel Escape" restored from the film mix doesn't worth a penny next to what's already in the set (the IE version is even better).

It makes then two bonus tracks interesting: both the Main & End Titles + a 3rd that I love: the "Asreroid Field" film version edit (has 15 sec. less - must have been reedited in 9 parts, quite unoticeable. Makes it more dynamic and thrilling).

This score is somehow hard to present the best way, if not through alternate sets.
