Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

I've downloaded the 1080p trailer via youtube and seen it a few times now. Tomorrow night I have a mate coming over for a film night so going to see how it looks on the Epson projector and 110" screen :)

I'm liking the trailer the more I see it. The only thing bugging me still is the falcon. The CGI is very detailed (pausing the 1080p shots reveals lots of attention to weathering and impressive digital lighting effects) but... the shape just looks off to me. It doesn't feel like the falcon. I've admired that ship since the late 70s, but this just feels wrong. I need to get a picture of the OTs model(s) and the trailer together to check. My gut feeling is the side walls of the ship are too thin, and the ship looks slightly too wide & long, stretched out?

Is it just me (probably!) or does the Falcon look a little flatter than it should be, or used to be? The side walls look thinner. I'm assuming it's just me as I'm guessing the animators would have had the original models and plans to refer to at ILM... (one hopes!). Would have been nice if they'd used one of the original models though for a few shots (perhaps they will) just as a nice nostalgic wink for the older fans.

Is no movie safe from this phenomenon?

Please tell me you didn't sit there fuming about colour tints on a teaser trailer, for a film that's over one year away, and go to the effort of making a poster about it?! Streuth.....

I think those shots all look great grouped together. Every shot in virtually every film ever made will have a tint of some description... All that matters is the end result in the final film.

Where has Abrams said it's being shot on 35mm so it will fit in the OT? Not that I don't believe you, but I didn't think Abrams has taken sides, so to speak.

Now the wait begins for the actual trailer. May, perhaps?

Yeah I'm wondering if we'll be dropped another morsel in May. I'm actually hoping that we'll get some some 'leaked' photos of glimpses of the original trilogy cast in costume, perhaps in time for the Christmas period. Was a little disappointed we didn't see them in this teaser, but kind of expected that, knowing how JJ likes to tease the audience.

What's the reason for it not looking film like? Digital manipulation to blend the CGI with the real stuff?

The fact it's just a trailer and a work in progress perhaps?...

JJ has said many times it's being shot on 35mm film and wants it to fit in with the original movies. I have no doubt the real McCoy will look fine come December 2015. I'm sure we'll get more of a feel for how it really looks with the next trailer.

I thought it was pretty good. This is the first thing to come along since 1983 that actually shows promise.

Its going to be a modern film and will have that modern look no matter who is making it (once it's on bluray just desaturate the colour). It will never seamlessly fit in with the OT visually, but it might in terms of pacing, characters etc.

I loved the shot if the x-wings, the falcon was a bit flashy, but it will be cool to see these old ships do things they never could before.

I'm guessing the weird lightsaber hilt will have some special purpose for fighting, so I'll hold off shitting on it for now.

Great that they didn't reveal the OT characters, it's a teaser. I want more.

Agree with all you've said. I hated that sword to begin with, but it is a nice nod to traditional swords & hilts with that cross shape. And those two little blades probably protect one from getting ones hands lopped off by those pesky Jedi types! ;)

Let's keep in mind that this is 30 years after ROTJ, which means many things have changed. A different look is probably for the better.

I'm glad we didn't see any OT characters in the trailer. It gave us our new characters and gave them a well-needed introduction. The Falcon was a nice touch though.

Absolutely.

Considering they only finished principle photography a month back a lot can change in the coming year. I'd love to see what this looks like on 35mm film and projected in a theatre. It felt like something new, in a familiar universe, which is just as it should be. Have to say, I do wish we'd gotten a quick glimpse of the original cast though. That JJ - such a tease!

Agreed about the falcon!

Trailer reveals that new film made by modern director will look like a new film made by a modern director. Fans with unrealistic expectations pissed.

I thought it was a very exciting trailer.

This.

This, This! ;)

Liked it, and it did exactly as it should do - teased, nothing more. JJ knows fans are dying to see the original cast, and I'm sure he's got that waiting in the wings for us around Christmas time. He's just playing with us here ;)

Is that shot at the end meant to be the falcon though? Seems likely, but it looks thinner than the original, unless it's had some serious work done over the past 32 years. Glad to see they replaced the radar dish though ;)

I liked it! GREAT bit of trailer scoring by John Williams too! Wow! :)

**RUMOR** Original theatrical cut of the OT to be released on blu ray!!
Time

I'd just like to add I saw Jurassic Park back in '93 several times and was utterly sold on both the practical & cgi effects. Ditto with Terminator 2 (though obviously that cannot really be termed 'realistic' unless one hangs out with shape-shifting cyborgs from the future). Seen today, I think the liquid metal version of the T2 looks pretty bad, and the bronto scene from Jurassic Park still pretty good, but I can now recognise the CGI 'look', and slightly lower resolution levels than its surroundings. Something my eye wasn't trained for back then. Ditto for people who - for example - don't notice film grain, and those that do. Those that don't notice matting lines, and those that do. You can't apply the same sweeping generalisations for everyone. I know what to look for now with cgi (a particular kind of motion blur, texture movements, incorrect darkness levels compared with the surroundings etc), I didn't then. I remember saying to friends it looked totally realistic back then. Today I wouldn't. Don't forget we only had VHS tapes back then too to refer to after the film had left cinemas. Today with HD our eyes are all far more 'fake savvy' than years before.

Thanks for posting these original vs. SE changes.

Never understood why Lucas went to the trouble of deliberately shooting with a (stocking wasn't it?!) defuse filter for many of the tattooine scenes, and then in 2004 went and artificially sharpened many of these deliberately soft shots! Another example of getting carried away playing around with a new digital gadget...

I like the bit where he mentions being back on familiar sets - the Falcon we already know about, but could he be referring to the Lars homestead, or perhaps Ben's old house? In a way I'd rather not know until I see the film next December - staying spoiler free is going to be a test in movie website news hunting self restraint. I'm not sure I'm upto it ;)

You are reading and posting in the exact wrong thread.

Hence the ironic winky ;)

Looking superb! You know what all these clips are geek-torture - to see it looking like film again & then for it to stop after a short period is hell hahaha! I'd love to have a copy of the film(s) prior to cleanup & stabilisation too - that'd approximate the condition Star Wars was in when I saw it in a double-bill with Empire in 1980 (it had seen better days!) ;)))
