obviously somewhere down the line
the 35mm prints need to be tracked down..
they shouldn't be that expensive, and
they'll be in pretty good shape.
however, that's a whole different can
of worms, right? hmmmmmmm..........

This WOULD be the most optimal solution and one I'd love to see come to fruition. I'd actually be pleased if we could get at least 1 35mm copy of the PT as well....for posterity and historical reference. I put out some feelers on the 35MM forum in hopes of gaining some info about the SE 35mm.
Wouldn't it be cool if we had our own film vault here? :) :)
yeah,
getting the PT on 35mm is also something
i wouldn't mind seeing/getting... who knows?????
again, they are pretty cheap to get also.. and
in good condition.

If we could somehow obtain stuff like this the DTS discs would sync properly and we'd have at least pre-DVD versions of these movies without any changes before moving to the consumer market.
This was posted over @ the 35mm forum:
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 1999 $450. SOLD
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones 2002 $550. SOLD
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith 2005 $600. Still Avail.Whether these prices are normal or not, I would not know. All I have in the way of film is a 35mm Scope Trailer for TPM. I have a 35mm set for the SE Trilogy trailer but it was cut and sold in like 5 frames per strip. I bought the whole lot but I have no way of scanning them to post as reference.
Negative 1 wanted somebody to start a new thread…
I think it would be fascinating to have transfers from 35mm prints of the Star Wars prequels as they appeared on film- especially Episode I from 1999. Lots of changes were made when it went to DVD. Episode II also has alternate shots. Episode III was basically untampered with for DVD, but it was a direct digital file instead of a print.
If all these were preserved (along with 1980 Empire and 1983 Jedi in 35mm which it looks like is going to happen), our work will truly be done- and future generations will be able to watch the original theater versions of the entire Star Wars saga.
1997: Star Wars- A New Hope SE in 35mm in 5.1 and DTS (coloring very different from LD/VHS)
1997: The Empire Strikes Back SE in 35mm in 5.1 and DTS
1997: Return of the Jedi SE in 35mm in 5.1 and DTS
*1999: The Phantom Menace in 35mm (original version- maybe even the premiere version where Darth Maul is in one piece)
2002: Attack of the Clones in 35mm (alternate shots, no added scenes, more filmic look)
2005: Revenge of the Sith in 35mm (alternate transition, more filmic look)
We have been needing a "definitive" 1997 NTSC DVD set in the best possible quality for a long time (including the 5.1 laserdisc audio). Thank you so much for taking this project on!
I just thought the subtitles were definitely needed to help clarify Solo's character. It's the logical next step
:p

Send a detachment down to retrieve them. See to it personally...
Harmy said: it's quite possible that the tech prints had slightly different colourtiming in some places than even '77 Eastman prints. But since all the surviving Eastman prints are faded, we may never know
That's why the new PS78 bootleg tape is so exciting- an unfaded color reference for an unfaded Eastman print....
I think it's important to remember too that just because the skin tones look "unnatural" in certain scenes, or certain scenes are biased towards tan or green, or are much whiter, that doesn't mean that's not how it was. These kinds of colorings and "pushing" the film and etc. would have been done in the lab, which in those days was much more advanced than it is now (the 70s equivalent of computer color grading today).
The colors would never have been on the original negative as it was shot, but they were deliberate decisions that you lose when you go back to the original negative and start over again (the special editions besides the 97 which was sourced off of GL's technicolor print from 1977- and also looked radically different between theater and home video). Also, I think that on VHS versions they color corrected it greatly as they did with other releases.
OT.com is probably the nicest place anywhere on the internet (not kidding), so probably best to assume that any "attack" is all in good fun:)

its one thing to say characters cannot be one way or another - but the characters in the PT have no depth and are not remotely compelling (except maybe palpatine).
IMO Palpatine was compelling because he had to be in order to remain consistent with the original trilogy.
That's the way I feel about a lot of good things from the prequel trilogy, like the battle on the lava and Anakin turning from good to bad- it had to be that way because of the OT- the skeleton of the story was already written.
I too would like to see a definitive, hi-def edition of the 1997 movies. They did get a theatrical release, but they too have pretty much disappeared...

Makes you wonder why he didn't give any of the PT villains redeemable qualities if he's so uncomfortable with stark black-and-white morality tales.
Just look at all the hemming and hawing in the script for Episode 3...
Obi-Wan: Only a Sith deals in absolutes! (doesn't even make sense b/c that statement is an absolute).
Anakin: From my point of view, the Jedi are evil!
And look at how the Force changed from the OT to the PT...midichlorians?

Youtube uses a system called 'Content ID', when the first note of John Williams soundtrack plays this will cause the upload to be flagged. There is no 'Fair Use' citing on youtube. When your video is blocked you can counter the block.
That is correct, but when you counter the block you check "Fair Use" and then there are no problems until Fox emails youtube and it comes down weeks later.

the general public is being deceived and misled into either not even knowing there was any earlier version of it or at least thinking the original versions had cardboard cut out spaceships and stuff
That's the most frustrating part- the average person has bought the line that the originals are "not very good quality." That featurette sounds like a great idea once you are done with it. I just want people to know and to see clips for themselves.
This looks fantastic.
Somebody needs to upload this to youtube for the general public. If you cite it as "fair use" it will take at least a couple weeks for fox to email them and for them to take it down.
Then the cat will be out of the bag and people will know that the original is not "lost."
It could be titled "Star Wars Original 1977 Version restored in HD"
Anyway thanks for your hard work.
Here is how "old George Lucas" might have done this scene differently from Revenge of the Sith- outright evil:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUFptjizGXE
2002 George Lucas interview:
Q: What religion are you?
A: I was raised Methodist. Now let's say I'm spiritual. It's Marin County. We're all Buddhists up here.
More evidence that Lucas underwent a major personality shift between the OT and the PT, which also explains the strong good versus evil undercurrent which for some reason he is so uncomfortable with in the PT.
Edit: Found another statement (don't know the year but probably from earlier): The creator of Star Wars and "the Force" was raised Methodist and has studied Eastern and Native American religions. He believes in God and in good and evil..
I am glad to see you are going to try and remain true to the original coloring, which in some places is radically different from what we have been seeing on home video.
^^I believe that part was implied in the original version, and made explicit in the special edition.

I know what it is.
This guy has the missing
seen of Luke missing with
the grappling hook. LOL
You know, all those people who saw it in May of '77 can't all be imagining things....
Considering the changes in the credits and the sound mixes, it wouldn't surprise me if the grappling hook shot really happened, but only on certain prints in the limited release...
Link fixed. Thanks!

Try watching American Graffiti or THX 1138 again; neither has aged well at all.
I don't know, I thought American Graffiti was really good. I think he really was talented at one point and had tremendous potential. Coppola said it, Irvin Kershner said it. George Lucas three 1970s films were completely different than the Star Wars prequels, there's just no getting around it.
I think a lot of it has to do with pride and starting to believe his own hype that he was a genius. He is talented, but before his personality changed he listened to other peoples' advice:

All filmmakers have a portfolio with peaks and valleys and maybe a decline towards the very end. But you do not have the outrageous dropoff from the OT (and ROTLA) to what we see now unless something else was at play.
I think his personality just changed.
it's what he has, and what he will do with it,
and what is done with the information from him.
you'll see. ha ha..
No! Not haha! We must know!
New prediction: It's a collector with the 70MM PRINTS.
