Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years

Yoda Is Your Father said:

Now, a HBO, Band of Brothers style 10-part series about Luke (played by Mark Hamill) training new Jedi, that I'd watch.

That would be awesome.

Mark Hamill's reaction on Twitter: "Congratulations to George for today's mega-deal! Can't comment on Ep 7 before I have all the facts which are short supply right now-Patience"

Doesn't sound like he's shooting it down!

Ewan McGregor: "Wonder if they will need any Obi-Wan Hologram action??!”

Sounds like now that it's going to be a new director, there is some renewed enthusiasm...

According to the Associated Press,

The seventh movie, with a working title of "Episode 7," is set for release in 2015. Episodes 8 and 9 will follow. The trilogy will continue the story of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia beyond "Return of the Jedi".

  • Disney purchased “extensive and detailed” treatment for Episodes 7-9 as part of this deal which they “feel very good about.”
  • Disney long term plan is to release a new live-action Star Wars film every 2-3 years – films may eventually explore entire 20,000 year time-span of the franchise.
  • It’s Lucas’ plan to stay retired, but he will serve as creative consultant on new Star Wars films. Kathleen Kennedy will executive produce. Both are now sitting down with writers

-------------------------------

Lucas not only wrote an "extensive and detailed" treatment, but now he is in the writer's room as well.  And he will be creative consultant through the entire process.

Look at it optimistically- this looks exactly like the makings of another "Empire".  Lucas is involved, but not in total control.  He could redeem himself yet!

I am glad that Episode 7 is going to be based on George Lucas' story treatment.  That makes it all right somehow; we know it will be authentic.

Also, how much do you want to bet it turns out like "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi"- i.e. George is the creative consultant but as he watches the movies getting made, he can't help but start getting his hands in it again.

I think he will be very much involved in Episode 7 regardless what he is saying now.

In which case that would actually be a really good thing- Lucas is best as an equal member of a team.

I don't know what to think.  As much as we complained about the prequels, there was a certain romanticism about George in his castle, making all these inexplicable changes and plot lines that only made sense to him.  He created the universe from scratch.

Now it is a Disney franchise?  We'll be getting "Episode 23" down the road? I don't know, it just makes me feel uneasy somehow.

I don't see any of this as Alec being an ass. I think all of these little stories are very funny!

I don't think anyone here thinks he was being an ass? I think the stories are funny, too, but I rarely see any stories where he has something positive to say about SW or SW fans.

(from Wikipedia)

Upon his first viewing of the film, Guinness wrote in his diary:

"It's a pretty staggering film as spectacle and technically brilliant. Exciting, very noisy and warm-hearted. The battle scenes at the end go on for five minutes too long, I feel, and some of the dialogue is excruciating and much of it is lost in noise, but it remains a vivid experience."
