stupid question about the OOT DVD's

Author

This is a dumb question, but I am confused about the format of the OOT DVD's, in the email sent by Lucas PR linked from the front page of OT.com, the email says, "Although these are non-anamorphic versions, they do preserve the original widescreen composition of the movies."

But in the description of a couple of these OOT special edition DVD's on ebay, it says pan & scan...

These ebay descriptions are wrong, yes? The OOT DVD's are not pan and scan are they?

One possibility is that the OOT disks on ebay are not the officially released versions.

The other possibility is that it is the pan and scan version of the SE. The official OOT sets come in two versions: widescreen and pan and scan--but these formats refer to disk 1, the SE. If you buy the SE in pan and scan, disk 2, the OOT, is still widescreen because that is the only version of that particular telecine that is available.

Yeah, there have been people on these boards who have bought the Pan and Scan version, so they'd have the widescreen version of the OOT and still be able to take larger screen caps from the fullscreen version of the SE.

Ahh thanks, I would have been pissed if the OOT was only released in pan and scan!

What's funny about that, IMO, Lucas seems to have treated the OOT on DVD with more respect than the SE. He let them crop the SE and mangle the picture ot fit a 4 by 3 display, but the OOT has not been released on DVD in fullscreen. It's kind of funny...

only because the 1993 DC telecine was letterbox only and they couldn't be bothered to spend the money to make a 4x3 extraction (aside from the fact that it wouldn't be watchable--and you think the letterbox image was dodgy!)

Those were my exact thoughts when it was confirmed the bonus disks would be widescreen only. When the non-anamorphic news broke back in late May, it was also a thought I had since fullscreen always has its market. Sure enough, several weeks ago I talked to someone who said they would not be buying the 9/12 release because the OOT was not in fullscreen!

When you stop and think about it, this adds one more layer to the issue. I mean, why didn't they bother with the fullscreen OOT? Weren't there also fullscreen laserdisk masters, or was the 1993 telecine just that much better than the others but only done in letterbox?

I'd much rather have a letterboxed widescreen than a fullscreen. Your friend is a bit weird.

Probably, but like I said, fullscreen will have its market until everyone in the world has a widescreen television.

Or until people start to realize and care that they're losing so much picture information. Yeah, widescreen TVs will probably take over first.

There is a fullscreen THX video master, it was used for the '95 vhs release. And previous fullscreen telecine's also made it to laserdisc. But what die hard fan who cares about seeing the originals would want a pan & scan version. One guy here did transfer the THX tapes later but right from the start back in '04 after the dvd's came out, I could tell it was a given that any bootlegs had to be widescreen if it was to be considered respectable. All the sites with screencaps of the changes used widescreen tapes. Then someone pointed out the special collection which was one of the first widescreen releases.

there also appears to be hong kong bootleg laserdisc of the 1995 full frame releases.

They could be legit but from what i heard the quality was horrendous so they must be bootlegs or maybe fox and lucasfilm had little care for quality control in HK.

They also have mandarin subs burnt into the whole movie overlaid over the picture since this was a full frame release and not widescreen the subs cannot be below the black letterbox bars.

I have Dark Jedi's Full Frame Faces releases that would be the pan and scan vhs tapes released in 1995, on three dvdr's. I remember when he originally capped them he needed help with finding a way to defeat macrovison an analogue version of what today would be called drm on dvd, hd-dvd and blu ray.

The japan special collection was the very first home video widescreen release, that is it was not a 9th generation widescreen bootleg vhs tape.

there was a scope ken films version of part 2 of their star wars digest, not mentioned in their catalogue. Though how many people had a way to project 8mm film in their homes. The films themselves were cheap and cheaply produced but the equipment to project them at the proper film speed with sound was not. It would have been an expensive hobby even in 1970's terms.

We actually had an 8mm projector in our house in the 70s, along with a camera that shot home movies on 8mm film. Not sure if the projector could handle sound, though... I know the 8mm family movies were silent. My parents were not well off, either, so they either got the projector for cheap or it was given to them as a gift.

Sadly, though, they got bored with it before Star Wars came out, so it wound up in the closet with only a handful of films (Bugs Bunny, a Bela Lugosi flick, and maybe another cartoon feature). Really wish we'd picked up Star Wars on 8mm back then.
