Recently unearthed: Grendel, Grendel, Grendel, an Australian animated film that tells the Beowulf legend from the monster's point-of-view. Peter Ustinov did the voice.

I remember seeing a VHS release of that, need to see it it's still at that store and watch it. Thanks for the reminder.

Off the top of my head I guess I'd say my Laserdisc of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" (the Giorgio Moroder restoration from 1984). That version is out of print and the LD is harder to come by than the VHS. I also have a letterboxed DVD of Robert Altman's "Brewster McCloud" (which last I checked, still hasn't been officially released on DVD).

Funny to see mention of the Legendary Pink Dots, Current 93, brainwashed, etc. here. I'm also a Dots fan, as well as having run the brainwashed websites for Current 93, Death In June, and Annie Anxiety for many years.

Some of my rarest videos (minus flat-out bootlegs) would probably be:
Current 93 - Since Yesterday VHS (someone stole my original and I had to replace it in recent years... aaargh!)
Elijah's Mantle - Philosophy With A Hammer VHS
Der Blutharsch - Gold Gab Ich Für Eisen VHS
Fire+Ice - Live at Hammersmith VHS
Coil - Live in NYC VHS
WaxTrax! Video Sampler #1 VHS
WaxTrax! Video Sampler #2 VHS (both of these are original promos sent out from WaxTrax! back in the day)
Laibach - Predictions Of Fire workprint VHS (may or may not be a bootleg)
Jefferson Starship - St. Charles 1976 conceptual video DVD (my own transfer from the original 16mm film)
The Trap Door complete collection 2xVHS (very rare official Canadian release, now superceded by the UK DVD)
Star Wars rental library edition VHS (picked up from a local video store that closed down)

That's what I can think of without being able to look right now. I don't actually own any laserdiscs.

It may not be very rare, but I was able to score the Season 2.0 set of the new Battlestar Galactica series at Blockbuster for $6 dollars (it was in a case during a Previously Viewed sale). I quite like that show, so this is very special for me.

My rarest DVD must be "Battle Beyond The Stars". I know it has only been released in the US, and is out of print for some years.

That's no moon. It's a LaserDisc.

I have a lot of LDs - some of my most treasured are
Spinal Tap - Criterion Edition
SOTS - Japanese release
Star Wars Episode 1 - Japanese Release
Dune box set - Japanese release - contains theatrical and TV versions
Aladdin box set - includes a making of disc narrated by John Rhys-Davies, book, etc

For my DVDs, the faves are the extended LOTR editions and the special slipcase I bought that houses all three.

I have the "Let It Be" LaserDisc as well (with NO rot!) and I have the first four "Golden Age of Looney Tunes" too. The fifth set (which I was not aware even existed until long after it was out of print) I later downloaded as a series of SVCDs...

Rarest videos in my collection.

Highlander II original theatrical european version.

Mad Max 2 R-18 uncut version w/ all the gore. This was the print they used to make the TV cut...except in the TV cut they cut out all the gore and the graphic violence, this has it all...

those are my coolest.

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.

I have the Japanese laserdisc and it is by far the best print available. It's just that those pesky subtitles during the songs can be distracting. I'm actually planning something special for SOTS, but I can only work on it during my limited free time so it may be some time before it's finished.

Of the 3 sources that are "readily" available, I'd rate the picture quality like this...

1. Japanese NTSC laserdisc
2. British PAL VHS
3. Chinese NTSC laserdisc

To Smurf: Do you consider this laserdisc to be rare because of its origin or because it is different from other editions? Does it include any extras, for example?

Depends on what "rare" means. Any officially released LD, VHS or DVD can be hardly rare since these are released in big quantities. Unless it is deleted shortly after the release and withdrawn from the market for some reason. If "rare" means that there is almost zero chance to find another copy of the same thing, then my rarest video is the promo VHS Making of Alien 3 obtained personally from the director. It is a working copy with a time counter running on the edge of the picture.

Otherwise, people from America could love some European or Japanese releases just because they cannot buy these so easy and vice versa. For example, Alien fans love the well-known VHS boxset called "the facehugger box". It was released in the UK in 1993 and if you live there, it is no rare item from your point of view. If you live in another country, you can still buy it through eBay, but you must spend a lots of money because it is pretty heavy and the postage fee is enormously high.

Now I've got it. The rarest video in my collection is a mini fanedit I made: I cut out the dream sequence from th emovie Grand Canyon. Nothing else. But it improves the movie a lot for me. I think no one else has this.

Nothing about fanediting is easy.

i suppose the olderst something I've got is an old open matte version of High Road to China on VHS. I know the film is out on DVD in sweden but it's 4:3 and I'd love to get this thing in widescreen on DVD eventually. its a nice little film
