I thought this was really interesting. No computer or anything- just a pencil, an eraser, a ruler, and that type of thing. This woman didn't even appear in the ending credits!

Wow, that was a cool story.

There is no lingerie in space…

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Hmm. Is her name in the more recent movie credits?

That's very interesting- I didn't know that. It's too bad she didn't get her name in the credits. Was her name in the SE credits? It should have been.

I think that George Lucas should get sued!

It's unlikely that she would be credited, since she was basically contracted to do that job under her company at the time.

Such is the lot of the contractor sometimes... you don't always get credit for what you do.

Really? You know, I never thought about it like that before.

Except that for the lack of time, she would have been listed, as Kurtz said.

If they didn't have time to put her name in the SW credits, they should have given her credit in ESB and Jedi, since the logo was used for those as well.

That's an interesting read. Especially the part about George wanting the logo to look "fascist". Some people have been saying for years the medal scene in Star Wars looks like something out of "Triumph of the Will".

Seeing how George let himself be inspired by WW2 dogfights for the space battles and (I believe) nazi uniforms for the imperials, I can understand why some attribute the medal ceremony to be inspired by nazi propaganda shots like this (still shot from "Triumph of the Will").

Is there an area on her site that has some of the original pencil drawings or inked version of the logo? Maybe I just missed it. I know it really didn't go through a normal series of revisions and according to her there was really only one minor one, but it would still be cool to see the original hand-drawn logo.

Considering the billions of things the logo has shown up on worldwide over the years - I wonder if there's ever times when she sees the logo, for instance, on a t-shirt as someone walks by and thinks to herself - "Yeah, I drew that with a pencil, on a piece of paper, while sitting at my desk at work 30 years ago".

Weird how something that started simply as a logo for a brochure to be given to investors was to become one of the most immediately recognizable logos in all of pop culture, around the globe.

Very interesting story Davis, thanks for the link.

I haven't found anything related to those early pencil drawings, but I've found some logos used in the early marketing:

Not sure where these two come from, but they appear to be similar:

I've seen some very early "story of a boy, a girl and a universe" trailers with this one:

And I just found one of those very early trailers, it can be seen here:

If trailers are anything to go by in terms of understanding the visions of the filmmakers (and at least in this case, I think they are), this just goes on to show how much Lucas' "vision" has changed over the past 30 years. It's sort of like "gritty sci-fi graffiti" vs. "teletubbies in space".
Very interesting story Davis, thanks for the link.

I second this!

This one in particular is not part of the early Star Wars logos, since it's not official in any way. This is from the Electric Moog Orchestra album "Music From Star Wars", which was the main Star Wars soundtrack music performed with a Moog synthesizer. They were forced to change the black with white Star Wars text logo cover to a blue with different white text cover including a label that says "Not the original soundtrack" due to the original release looking too much like the official John Williams soundtrack release.

See here for the revised version.

I was actually a victim of this deception: my aunt bought me the original version of this record thinking she was getting the soundtrack I asked for on my birthday. Imagine my surprise when it was not what I thought it was. In a way though, I think the Moog version ended up being even cooler than the regular soundtrack, because it was really bizarre and nobody else had it. That's the soundtrack album I grew up with.

I remeber I re-created the SW logo on my lite-brite when I was a kid (with clear pegs). I wish I'd taken a photo of it - it looked really cool.
