I mean, sure, it does have some funny moments, but those are intentional and they would only work for that part of the story. An action scene being hilarious while it should have been exciting or emotional doesn’t work. Again, it worked when we were kids because we didn’t notice these things… I mean, some of us genuinely thought Ewoks were cool at the time after all. (Even though Ewoks were Gungan’s of the original trilogy, even though they are not as terrible as Gungan’s.)

Porkins gives a fine performance. The only thing that makes him “funny” is his weight. Which, I mean, who cares? It’d be cool to add some female pilots but I don’t see why you’d need to get rid of Porkins. Sure, he’s the only pilot without a chin strap. Sure he can barely fit in the cockpit. But whatever. The rebellion will take whoever they can get.

I see your point, but he’s such an iconic character that I and probably most others wouldn’t want him removed. Plus, it’s a charming reminder that it’s a 70s film - you’d never have an obese character named “Porkins” in this day and age. It’s charming.
There’s nothing wrong with Porkins.
The only ‘funny’ thing about him is that the other pilots call him “Porkins”. And that isn’t ‘take you out of the moment’ funny, just a bit humorous. And it’s great character building. It immediately let’s the audience know that these guys are close with each other. That there’s a strong history and camaraderie between them.
And the actor’s performance is fine. His delivery of the lines is appropriate and memorable.
I agree with you that the Obi-Wan/Vader duel needs some flair, but cutting Porkins would be criminal.

Wondering if there’s any way (or interest) in fixing the flashes on the stardestroyer’s underside during the opening flyover. Mike Verta has a very interesting video showing how the flash element is a few frames ahead/behind of the actual stardestroyer, so it doesn’t line up as it actually should.
I think that the recomposite of the shot for the SE shifted the flashes 1 or 2 frames further, so there should be a way to reconstruct a full flyover without flashes. The problem would be in extracting the flashes to place in the correct locations, and this would probably take some reconstruction in Photoshop.

And I can’t even begin to imagine how expensive it would be if one were to ever create a CGI version of a young Denis Lawson, to replace the Colin Higgins Wedge in the briefing room scene. And speaking of Higgins, I just read that he passed away 5 years ago.

I don’t know if someone already posted this idea, but here it goes: Since most of us will agree that Rogue One is a good movie, and some of us feel that we need to have 3 movies before the original trilogy, why not make Rogue one as the 3rd movie and compress those 3 movies from the prequel trilogy to only 2 movies?
We have plenty of sillyness to cut from the prequel, that’s for sure. And with Rogue One all we need is to add a crawl at the beginning to tie it better with the 2 other movies.

Well, I think that Rogue One is, by far and without contest, the worst Star Wars ever, so I wouldn’t want this awful movie as Episode III. And I really like Episode III the way it was released in theater (even if I prefer solid fanedits of it to remove the little bits I don’t like). Even Episode II is way better than Rogue One (!). And even with not perfect movies I like the “2 trilogies” structure developed by Lucas with his 6 movies saga, something you would completely lose by cutting down them to 5 movies with the terrible (which doesn’t add anything of value) Rogue One inserted into it.

Even Episode II is way better than Rogue One (!).
I will admit that I *enjoy* fanedited eps II and III more than rogue one. But I wouldn’t ever say they are actually better made movies, that’s silly. I only enjoy them more cuz Rogue One isn’t really my style of movie.
I would never enjoy episode 2 in any shape or form over Rogue One but fanedited Revenge of the Sith might be more enjoyable even if Rogue One is better made.

I of course respect your opinion about Rogue One not being a good Star Wars movie, but when you say that a Star Wars movie where Jar Jar Binks is an important character is better than Rogue One… There’s nothing more to be said, I think.
