It seems a bit backwards to massage the film to mesh with prior EU material since EU material will already bear that out in time as it does. If we say Poe left to join the Republic, even if that helps things that have been published so far surely it’ll come into conflict with future EU material.
Nothing wrong with making the change because you prefer it that way, but current EU seems like an unusual motivation.

Just wanted to chime in that I watched V4 this friday.
For me, you took a 5/10 star wars film and made it into a solid 8/10! Huge improvement in pacing, stakes, character arcs and the overall storytelling! I cannot currently imagine how to get it better without actual rewrites and reshoots.

If I’d presented it to myself 2 days after seeing TROS through the miracle of time travel, I’d hardly have believed it myself. I’m grateful for the enormous help and dedication of the core group and ancillary work and discussion throughout. Not just for the end result but the experience.

I’ve been thinking about Leia and the conversation on Ach-To since it was brought up here recently. It really would be good to have some mention of Leia somehow, because the scene barrels right into a Leia-centric conversation. And the film honestly does work better (in a vacuum) when Leia is aware of Rey’s heritage throughout. What I don’t like is the implication that Leia and/or Luke knew during the events of TFA/TLJ. Asking the audience to watch those stories again and try believe that is a bridge too far.
What if we simply replaced “Leia knew it too” with “Leia learned the truth after my passing”? That way it doesn’t state Luke told her, but it’s implied.

I would make the argument that the line “Leia knew it too” does not necessarily mean that they knew all throughout the previous movies. It could be taken to meaning that she and Luke have known since his death. It’s ambiguous enough and I think it’s better than spelling it.
The analytic part of my brain would feel better having that partitioned off, though, lol.
You’re right it’s not necessarily the case but I just want to put up the bowling bumpers around that for the audience. Something that says she learned or discovered the truth would be enough, not merely that she knew. Because that leaves it open to maybe she knew from the moment she first saw her.

So… there likely will be a V5 at some point. It’d be silly to be hasty about it, though. I imagine waiting until all the Rey Nobody pieces are finished to Dom’s satisfaction and then release a final version of both at once.

If I had to make a call on the wording right this minute and live with it, I’d go with “Leia learned the truth after my passing.” Doesn’t explicitly comment on Luke’s own knowledge and leaves it open, though implies she learned it from Luke and preventing the misunderstanding that she knew during the prior movies.

Part of it that we’d need to be careful about… Leia didn’t know Palpatine was alive until the start of the movie, but knew of Rey’s lineage BEFORE then… god this movie is filled with plot holes, because if Leia knew of Rey’s past then she would know Palpatine was still alive! UGH
What if… it was because Leia sensed the strength of Rey’s abilities/powers once she started to train her. Because in TFA/TLJ isn’t around Rey when she uses the force much. And, it doesn’t rely on Luke having to tell her

Leia may not have known Palpatine was alive before the start of the film, but she still could have sensed Rey’s dark lineage. There’s no reason why Palpatine still needed to be alive for Rey to be descended from him.

Nev beat me to it while I was writing my response haha. Luke cut himself off from the force and couldn’t see the whole picture. The “raw strength” he sensed in Kylo (Snoke) is the same he briefly sensed in Rey (Palpatine). It wasn’t until Leia started to train Rey that she put it together that she had PapaPalps™ power

Funnily enough I was having this same discussion with myself last week. I generated a bunch of different options - most of them far too wordy.
At this point I want to go with whatever we all agree would be best here. I had the same initial thought as DZ realizing that Leia should know something was up with Palps if she knew Rey was one. But yeah, Leia would just have the same thought that we all had after seeing the film and before the novelization - that Palpatine had a secret love child during his reign. And he could be completely dead even if it meant he had an heir.
I’m wary of having it possible to sense somebody’s genetics purely by being around them. Luke and Leia definitely realized they shared some sort of connection in the OT, but it took Kenobi spelling it out for him to realize it. Especially since being a Palpatine is something so out of left field. Then again, Leia would have spent plenty of time around Palpatine in the Senate. I could buy it if it was more of a vision-like thing instead of just feeling it, but there’s no real way to write that in a concise way.

And yeah, that is awfully poetic. Whereas Luke reacted in fear and (initially) sought to destroy Ben to prevent that darkness from ever terrorizing the galaxy, Leia responds with love and care, and it pays off big. I think I’m definitely willing to overlook the coincidental nature of it all for the greater narrative.
I think that’d be a bit too on the nose, but some mention of training would be a nice parallel.
