The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 670

This is all straying pretty far from the story as we have it, and I’d rather keep Ascendant pretty close to what we have and not introduce sweeping changes to Palpatine’s plan. I’m not convinced introducing the idea that he wanted to have them fight in order to claim the victor enhances anything here.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

“I never wanted you dead…I wanted you strong…Empress Palpatine.”

I like the simplicity of that.

Also makes me think something else. I would say maybe the stupidest part of Palpatine’s plan is that he orders Ochi to kill the only people who know where Rey is and doesn’t send anyone to look for her after. Is there a way we can make that on purpose? A line from him saying “I killed your parents to fuel the darkness in you” something like that.

Fair enough. Though I think you mean Palpatine’s Plans. He’s got like a good half dozen. 😉

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

One more attempt though:

(off-screen) “Long have I waited, the last Skywalker failed my test."

(Cut to Palpatine on-screen)

(back to off-screen) “But now you have come, (on-screen again) Empress Palpatine. You will take the throne. It is your birthright to rule, here. It is in your blood, our blood.”

How about something like “Since my current apprentice failed to kill you, why don’t we just make you… strong?” from Palpatine to Rey? Simple, unintrusive and makes his goals and relationship to her a little more clear.

Why would Palpatine tell Rey she’s plan B? I don’t think this needs to be spelled out, he tells Pryde “The princess of Alderaan has disrupted my plan, but her foolish act will be in vain” and we already removed “I never wanted you dead” so it’s clear in this version he did mean for Kylo to kill Rey, but he sees an oportunity tu turn Rey instead.

Because that’s Palpatine. He just doesn’t care, really, and he loves it. I mean, it’s the same guy who was saying right in front of Vader how Luke should take his place.

Both fair points.

Also, I played around with a Palpatine AI voice just so we know if all this is even worth discussing, and I’ll admit I’m honestly surprised with it. With that said, I still don’t think any AI dialogue would even hold up with the surrounding dialogue.

The only scene I could think of that you could make it work would be the hologram scene he has with general Pryde, since his hologram voice doesn’t have that heavy reverb, and any artifacts can be “masked” by the hologram distortion. The Sith ship blowing up Kijimi was cut, wasn’t it? If so, was the relevant dialogue from this scene also cut? If anything, you could potentially pop in one line in its place.

Palpatine: The Princess of Alderaan has disrupted my plan, but her foolish act will be in vain. Come to me on Exegol, General Pryde.
Pryde: As I served you in the old wars, I serve you now.
Palpatine: Only the strongest shall rule. The Final Order begins. She will come, her friends will follow.

Having Palpatine say this to a third party doesn’t mess with how he manipulates Rey or Kylo directly. But, it speaks to Palpatine’s philosophy, that Kylo is no longer the strongest and maybe “she” is, and it can even hint at Pryde’s motivations for being loyal to Palpatine. He clearly felt he was stronger than Hux and deserved to rule more than him.

Anyway, we can drop the Palpatine stuff. Like I said, I think this is the only scene you could seamlessly use Palpatine AI voice.

What’s the issue with the Palp voice, audio quality?

Yeah, it’s the cruft that Hal has talked about. And I tried to use the same method I used to clean up Poe’s dialogue but it doesn’t work.

These are just some random lines I spat out real quick to test it:

It’s something you might be able to get away with through the narrative filter of holograms or masks, like in Kylo’s case, but when they’re just speaking out loud it doesn’t hold up.

I hear what you’re saying. It honestly still sounds pretty good, although I believe you if you say it doesn’t match up.

I think the other issue is that McDiarmid tends to perform a bit more than the AI seems able to capture.

Off topic but, I remember awhile back somebody on here compiled every single piece of deleted/unused material for TROS that was found in TV spots, documentaries, trailers and the like. Would any of you happen to have it still and could link me to it? I’d greatly appreciate it.

I’d like to see this, too.

Here’s an attempt at extending the vision sequence, using material that was already part of the ‘Rey Nobody’ version. While I do still want to get a glimpse of Ochi’s ship, the changes we have been talking about with Rey feeling undeserving of Leia’s express sense of familial connection make it more important to establish this. So not only does she see herself on the Sith throne, she is haunted by past brushes with darkness. (The ambient audio for the added parts is a little janky, pulling from the TFA vision sequence and the TLJ scene where Luke looks into Kylo Ren’s mind in a flashback.)

EDIT: Also, so I don’t forget, I still need a replacement for “He’s too dangerous” but with a somewhat fast delivery.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I’ll get on this today.

I like the new vision sequence, but it does have a slight continuity error with Starlight. It uses a shot in which Rey has Sith eyes in Starlight. So I recommend either trying to use a different shot or just straight up using Starlight footage since it’s a vision anyway 😉

The last one of those works really well, good improvement. Thank you!
