…Boss Nass…really didn’t need some elaborate exuse, while Tarpals…does need it.
Methinks yer gettin’ a leetle carried away…
Boss Nass is just fat to a degree approaching Huttitude.
“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”
The EU had an explanation for this (of course) wherein there are two different types of Gungan, one being the Jar Jar kind and the other being the Boss Nass kind.
But why does Boss Nass need and explanation? He’s just fatter than the other Gungans. Tarpals on the other hand actually has a unique feature.
Because that’s how the old EU (slightly less so the new EU) worked, everything had to have a detailed exacting explanation even if they had to retcon or shoehorn it in. Usually they were dumb.
I’m not questioning that the EU had explanations for everything, I’m well aware of that, I just find it to be odd, even by the standards of the old EU to explain Boss Nass, which really didn’t need some elaborate exuse, while Tarpals, who does need it, doesn’t.
EDIT: Now that I’ve actually looked up Gungans on Wookieepedia I see why Boss Nass would be considered a different type of Gungan as his eyes are completely different from the rest.
I still think it’s weird that Tarpals’ tendrils mustache is never mentioned (at least not that I can find).

Well, if you’re going to waste time explaining why fictional aliens are different from one another you might as well do a thorough job of it.
I’m actually kind of surprised to see that Wookieepedia doesn’t have some elaborate explanation for something.
(And as I posted above, I now see why Boss Nass “needed” the explanation.)

Must be a narwhal thing…
Lol.
Also it’s not like I’m seeing this as being important, I just find the inconsistency weird, that’s all. Maybe I should have phrased my previous post(s) a little better.

Like I said, I always thought it was weird too. Even more weird that people always say “He’s just a fat gungan.” when that clearly isn’t true. And the other guy’s mustache… It just shows how little George cares about all of this.
I highly doubt Lucas had anything to do about these different Gungan “races”. Pretty sure that was all in the EU. Wookieepedia as per usual is pretty unclear about when this explanation became canon.
Also since TPM isn’t exactly the most popular SW film I think a lot of people forget the little details and therefore assume that Boss Nass is just fat. Like I just did until I actually bothered to look it up.
However, speaking of lazy.
This is some pretty half-assed CGI. It also just looks like they re-used the Jar Jar model multiple times.

This is like wondering why all Vulcans and Klingons don’t look the same. One thing that makes Nass look different is that his ears are tied together behind his head. You don’t really see them much in the movie.
In any case, Tarpals gets all the ladies with that 'stache. 😉
Where were you in '77?

I continue to hate the way Wookieepedia defaults its images to super-small size.

Of course George had something to do with it. He approved every design in the movie! The EU didn’t make and then approve the character designs.

Just chop off everything after .png and you’ll get the full-size image.
Those Gungans look awful though.

I was referring to there being two Gungan races as an excuse for the different appearances. Of course Lucas approved of their appearances in the movie. What’s been bugging me is that Lucas approved of three variations of the design, yet the EU only explained two of them, despite their tendency to add an overly complex explanation and backstory to everything.

I’m confused by this post. What are images doing in this image thread?
JEDIT: Dammit LH!

A question that has preoccupied the minds of many Star Trek fans, including the writers of Enterprise. And a completely ridiculous thing to worry about.
Also, Captain Tarpals has a Gungastache because he is a military-man archetype and military men traditionally have moustaches.
“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”
Even counting TFA, there are not enough ladies wielding lightsabers in the canon SW 'verse.

I wish they would have made Leia a Jedi.
Nah, there were plenty already.

Sure, that explains Lucas’ reasoning. However I’m still surprised that Wookieepedia doesn’t have an elaborate in-universe explanation for it.
(I guess even the EU writers didn’t really give that much of a damn about Gungans.)

If the blue alien is supposed to be Supreme Leader Snoke then I wish they would have stuck with that design. Far more visually interesting and original than what we got. They can still rectify this since we haven’t been the Supreme Leader in person.

The PT era has plenty of Jedi ladies of various species.
I wish they would have made Leia a Jedi.
Leia being slightly Force sensitive but not a Jedi is one the best ideas regarding her character. Plus it would be very hard to find a stuntwoman who looks like her now to perform her action scenes…
