The SW script referred to him as the “dark lord of the sith”, and a lot of marketing material back in the 70’s, as well as comics, etc. used the same description of him.
Granted at this point Lucas hadn’t really established what a sith was. However what they were in the earliest drafts weren’t too far away from what ended up being in the PT.
