Yeah I like DZ’s modification. While the Republic certainly is unprepared for another war, they definitely have a capable fleet which plays a minor role in this edit. I think characterizing it as inaction due to the democratic process is fitting. It does mirror Episode 1 nicely, except this time countless worlds are being impacted and not just Naboo.

It is a time of despair.

Yeah, it’s just the first two lines of paragraph three again.
The reason I don’t like saying that the Republic is mired in endless debate is that such wording is more than just a reference to Episode 1; it is a direct return to the status quo of that movie, and feels like yet another pointless regression rather than a fun homage.
The new lines now at least point to a strategy by the New Republic, even if misguided. The Senate is intentionally avoiding provocative acts that could spark a greater war, since the First Order is still acting beyond Republic jurisdiction as far as anyone knows.
Also, the wording of ‘take action’ is used later by Leia in the reincorporated deleted scene, so it helps to define a consistent through line for the New Republic.

I’d maybe say "Wary of taking any action that could lead to war", because wariness gives them a little more credit than full fear. It’s really good though.
What’s the status of Starlight right now? Does this imply that there’s a new version on the horizon? Did you have a plan to release a Starlight version of TLJ too?
I’d prefer a direct callback to Padme’s line from TPM: “Wary to condone any action that could lead to war…”

Yeah, I like the reference to Padme within the proposed new opening crawl. “It’s like poetry.They rhyme.” Sorry if this has been stated before, but is there any other purposed changes for an updated verison of this edit or is it simply a tweaking of the opening crawl?
Ideally I’d like to modify Poe’s AI line since it was using an outdated model from the Lego game instead of the actual scene it’s integrated into.
Just thinking…
- Redo Poe’s Illum line
- Maybe cleanup/redo Finn’s: “It’s the First Order, they’ve found us line.”
- An angry line for Poe about making the First Order pay after the destruction of the Hosnian System (helping to explain why they are continuing the assault)
- Potential line for Lor San Tekka (or Kylo) clarifying that it isn’t a map that Luke left to find him, but a map that leads to an ancient Jedi Temple where Luke may be, clearing up the confusion on why Luke would leave a map if he didn’t want to be found.
- Maybe some kind of line before Rey leaves to find Luke about starting an evacuation soon because the First Order is coming to D’Qar to counterattack.
- Any Leia exposition lines that could be on comms during the Starkiller X-Wing battle?
- A Maz Kanata line about having to leave soon to go settle a union dispute (TLJ connection)
- Over the loudspeaker at the Resistance base in the background “Rose Tico, please report to maintenance.”

I think Nev was also considering inserting the unused trailer footage of Maz handing the lightsaber to Leia into Rey’s vision. It would be played in reverse to make it seem like Leia is handing it to Maz and then there would be an AI line from Leia basically saying something like “Keep it safe, old friend.”
Now, as for why Leia got the lightsaber, maybe she only happened upon it when Luke was already in hiding. I dunno, I suppose it’s better than it ending up with Maz inexplicably and she never even considered returning it to the Skywalkers (over the course of 30ish years) despite being close with Chewie and Han.
Hey Jar Jar and DZ, love all the ideas listed above. Anything to make the ST seem more cohesive and actually somewhat planned out. AI voice technology is getting so much better daily it really seems like the sky could be the limit. That new tech too where you can drive video to video character sequences leaves a lot of potential to eventually add or alter lines on screen instead of having the AI audio having to be voice overs or occur off screen to make it convincing. Look forward to seeing what Nev cooks up for V2 of this edit!
