The Acolyte has long been my low-key most anticipated SW project. Headland is a more interesting hire than those out of the Mandalorian factory; and likewise the time period is more interesting than ‘right next to the OT’

… granted. Expectations are still low, but Andor was solid stuff so these can work out occassionally.

I wish The Acolyte SW Celebration short was offically released.

It is a pity Disney or Lucasfilm think fans cannot tell the difference between two or more different series.

That they will not release much publicity for other series at all before Ahsoka is finished so not to “confuse” anyone, or to keep fan focus on the upcoming show?

It will be publicity for Skeleton Crew series after Ahsoka finishes? And then after, we may see some Acolyte content? A long time yet.

The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.

Formerly Emre1601 - computer hard drives are brittle too!

‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ Sets Summer 2024 Release Window [Exclusive] - from Collider

• The Acolyte is a highly-anticipated Star Wars series set to release on Disney+ this summer, taking place 50 years before The Phantom Menace .
• The series follows a former Jedi Padawan and her one-time Master as they investigate sinister crimes in an ever-changing galaxy, challenging the fallibility of the Jedi Order.
• Exciting is the inclusion of Vernestra Rwoh, a fan-favorite character from The High Republic books, promising an intriguing storyline.

'High Republic fans, the wait just got that much more bearable. Ever since releasing its first trailer at Star Wars Celebration in London last year, the hype for Star Wars series The Acolyte has only grown, with fans eager for any update on the highly-anticipated project. Now, Collider has learned that the live-action High Republic-set series from creator Leslye Headland is set to release on Disney+ this summer.

Set 50 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, The Acolyte will follow a former Jedi Padawan, and her one-time Master as they fall into an investigation of sinister crimes in an ever-changing galaxy. The trailer that premiered at Star Wars Celebration only gave fans a hint at what they could expect when the series premieres, but even so, already impressed those lucky enough to see it with the bold visual take on an era that thus far has not appeared on screen.

The series also boasts a massive, and massively-talented, ensemble cast led by Amandla Stenberg. They will be joined by Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae as a Jedi Master, and Joonas Suotamo as a Wookiee Jedi named Kelnacca. Also in The Acolyte’s cast are Jodie Turner-Smith, Manny Jacinto, and Charlie Barnett, though in typical Star Wars fashion, details about their roles are heavily under wraps.

‘The Acolyte’ Has a Connection to ‘The High Republic’ Books

Less under wraps, and perhaps most exciting to fans of The High Republic books, was the news that Rebecca Henderson, initially announced to be playing a Mirialan Jedi, would in fact be playing an older version of Vernestra Rwoh, one of the more prominent characters in Phase I and III of the books, and an all-around fan-favorite.

The inclusion of Vernsestra is an exciting one, not just because of the connection to the books, but because of what such an inclusion might spell for fans of both the books and the character in her on-page and on-screen incarnations. Headland told Collider at Celebration that the series would “not be kind” to the Jedi, and would call the fallibility of the institution into question. With all the struggles Vernestra has already been through, and those she still has to face, there are probably few characters better suited to tackle the imperfections of the Jedi Order from the inside.

The Acolyte will premiere on Disney+ in Summer 2024.’

I am guessing the week after The Bad Batch season 3 finishes? (the final episode of TBB is on May 1)

“Don’t tell anyone… but when ‘Star Wars’ first came out, I didn’t know where it was going either. The trick is to pretend you’ve planned the whole thing out in advance. Throw in some father issues and references to other stories - let’s call them homages - and you’ve got a series.” - George Lucas

A Wookie Jedi? Man, I feel like it would be a real struggle to depict such a thing in live action and avoid having it look really stupid. I mean a giant Yeti with a lightsaber is hard to pull off in a non-comedic way.

How so?

A Wookiee Jedi is perfectly plausible. The downfall of that character will be the man bun they gave him.

I must be experiencing Star Wars fatigue (at least for brand-new content) right now. I have no interest whatsoever in this show, despite all signs pointing to it being technically good.

Really, I think the issue is just that all the new content is just too run-of-the-mill. I’d like them to make something imaginative for once.

I understand that fatigue, though for me I associate it more with Filoni and Favreau content. I love Andor and am hoping we’ll see Acolyte as being closer to that, than another meh Mandoverse or Kenobi type series.

Because this is set 50 years before TPM it shouldn’t have those overused and empty memberberries or needless fan service that F+F like showcase. And I’m hoping this will be something different all around, maybe bringing some of the better High Republic era feel from the books and comics with it.

Although I am probing just hoping a little too much! 😉

I wouldn’t get my hopes too high. In that period they can:

  • Still use Yoda
  • Introduce his young apprentice Dooku
  • Finally bring Darth Plagueis to the screen
  • Possibly show familial ties between Kelnacca and a certain infamous walking carpet

My issue is that I have zero interest in any stories pertaining to Jedi anymore. Between Filoni and Abrams, the Jedi have been thoroughly ruined in all eras.

“The Anarchists are right in everything; in the negation of the existing order and in the assertion that, without Authority there could not be worse violence than that of Authority under existing conditions. They are mistaken only in thinking that anarchy can be instituted by a violent revolution… There can be only one permanent revolution — a moral one: the regeneration of the inner man. How is this revolution to take place? Nobody knows how it will take place in humanity, but every man feels it clearly in himself. And yet in our world everybody thinks of changing humanity, and nobody thinks of changing himself.”

At the risk of getting mildly off-topic, easily my favorite thing about the Ahsoka show were the Dark Jedi. They aren’t cartoonish as the Sith, and they definitely come close to the OT (especially ANH) idea of the Jedi as wandering warriors. There are traces of this in Ahsoka’s portrayal as well, and we definitely get this vibe in Visions too. That’s how I’d love to see Jedi in future content, though the PT/TCW/EU idea of the Jedi is so entrenched that it’s not likely to leave anytime soon.

Collider are reporting The Acolyte has ‘a Tentative Release Date of June 5, 2024’.

“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” - George Lucas

Huh, I had no idea they were making such good progress on it. I’ll still watch it, even though I’m not really excited.

Trailer looks intriguing but again, Lighting lighting lighting, looks like a basic flat looking disney show.

If not for my childhood being inextricably tied to Star Wars, I’d be asking the same question…

Basic flat looking Disney show…yep that about somes up my reaction too. It looks somewhat interesting but I’m just WAY over Jedi and their robes and their religious blundering. After Andor season 2 it’s looking extremely boring and bleak unless they bring Tony Gilroy to a different SW project. He gets it.

I’ve been way more positive on the recent Star Wars shows than other have been as despite their issues I greatly enjoyed Mandalorian season 3 and Ahsoka, but the trailer for this doesn’t inspire confidence. Its clear from the poster and trailer it wants to go for a darker, maybe even horroresque tone, but it does a poor job of portraying that. Others have mentioned the lighting as an issue, but more than that the fight choreography us somewhat lacking. I’m not sure what it was but the first fight that we see doesn’t seem as intense as it should be. I’m really hoping this is just a really bad trailer as I love the High Republic era and the premise is genuinely intriguing but the trailer just doesn’t work as it should.

5.5/10 trailer for me. Feeling pretty neutral about the show in general, but remain a little bit intrigued. It didn’t match the tone of the poster though…? I don’t know, I’ve watched the trailer 5 full times and something felt a little off or shallow with the trailer itself, but it certainly wasn’t bad. For some reason, the lighting/presentation of the sets still doesn’t fit with the “feel” of a George Lucas set/lighting/background/costumes. I know they can’t really perfectly replicate it with the differing technology nowadays, but there has to be a way to resemble the grand scale of a Lucas set piece. Do the shots still feel… flat or like they’re missing something? Even with this, I am interested to learn more about the show and will follow with cautious optimism.

This is a great question. This is the kind of thought that makes me want to make a Star Wars fan film, even if it was more of a proof of concept film, that was just about trying to replicate that Lucas/Original Trilogy look. There may be fan films out there that do this but I feel like I’ve never seen it. Instead of things looking clean and modern, go for the aesthetic of an older era.

Agree. I was cautiously optimistic about this because Russian Doll was wonderfully inventive. But the trailer looks generic Disney+ show. The lighting & cinematography in several shots is bland.

Maybe it’s the way the trailer has been put together. But it’s dampened my expectations.
