TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released) — Page 64

Finally got a chance to watch.

Wonderful, wonderful!

I watched it with a friend who couldn’t stand the theatrical version of TFA. It took some convincing to get him to watch but I told him this was an edit so he gave it a chance. He loved it and so did I! I didn’t tell him what changes were made and when it was over he said he couldn’t tell what had been changed, just that it was definitely better. Me personally, I’ll never be going back to the theatrical release. Fantastic work everyone, thank you for this!

Just one minor note, I watched the 720p version and I noticed a lot of aliasing throughout. It happened a lot in effects shots and especially in any close-ups of Kylo’s helmet.

Yeah, the 720p version was less than optimal, for certain. I was in a time crunch after facing a series of failed encodes using the preferred method. I would not have put it out in such shoddy form were it not to provide it for people to have a last-minute pre-TLJ viewing during the weekend.

One more thing I noticed - there’s a low rumble when Finn sees the Finalizer, but I don’t think it’s loud enough for Finn to notice, at least with the music. Perhaps it would help to mix in a more conventional ship sound, something like when the Falcon enters Yavin IV’s atmosphere.

I also noticed something else.
At 1:49:11 in the edit, during the shot of Chewbacca roaring right before he shoots Kylo Ren, there seems to be a color grade change in the middle of the shot. Definitely need someone to double check to make sure I’m just not seeing things.

^ And as I believe has been requested already, bringing the music down very slightly around Han’s line, “Where’d you get that,” and Snoke’s, “Prepare the weapon” would be helpful, too.

In other news, Lord_Phillock, the guy behind the tremendous LOTR audio soundscape project, will be submitting options for the “Weapon fully recharged” line.

I think he originally reacts to the crowd reaction. But you may be right. If you could link to the ship sound you’re referring to it would help.

Of the three rumbles in that clip, I’d recommend trying the last one before they cut to the Rebel soldier. Although I think just boosting the original one in the mix might suffice.

In other news, got another friend to check out the project:

Wow
Other than the starkiller base stuff I honestly don’t know what was changed because I only saw it once two years ago
But…you weren’t kidding
What I just saw was an incredible film
If that’s what I had seen in theaters, any nitpicks I might have felt would have been insignificant ones I kept to myself
I found myself absolutely enraptured throughout most of it
And not even doing the meta thing of thinking about how it was making me feel that way
It grabbed my attention so thoroughly that none of that mattered

If I recall correctly, one of his biggest nits about the original film after Starkiller was Artoo’s magical recovery. So congrats, again!

I personally don’t understand how a (relatively) light fan edit like this can cause such a massive change in opinion from someone, but power to them, and impressive work then on the edit. It’s a delightful film, really, so I’m happy to see people enjoy it, even if it takes some changes.

I’m excited to watch the finished v2 when I get the chance, seems like you guys did a fantastic job.

Cool, I’m glad to hear this is being well received. I’m sure the time factor is important as well, giving it a rest before revisiting the film again. But, it’s a very elegant, simple change that really helps.

When I saw TFA a handful of times in theater, I would enjoy it very much up until the first Snoke scene. Then, I cringed at the Starkiller stuff getting started, but then we’d jump back to the Luke map plot. That went on until Hux blew up the Republic, which just felt off to me from the first viewing. Then it’s back to the Luke map plot again.

I just want to say I watched V2 in full on my TV and sound system tonight and I was pretty impressed by how it turned out, everything feels pretty seamless.

The only major things I noticed were some of the slowed shots during the rescue sequence after the lightsaber battle, and Snoke’s “fire the weapon” line being kind of drowned out by the music.

Awesome job!

Hal (et all): Great work! Truly. I signed up for account here just to say thank you (1st post). Watched it right before watching The Last Jedi.

As far as TFA edit, I have a few minor suggestions for next version. (those are totally dwarfed by the long list of praise I could give).

  1. The scene during the attack on Starkiller where Hux goes to Snoke and tells them they found rebel base really should be removed. Audience at the point is reeling emotionally from all the Senate being destroyed and Han dying, so there is no need for “adding tension.” I found the scene interrupted the flow of the third act without adding anything at that point. Additionally, it comes after the sun totally disappears into darkness (which is a big visual part in the Ren/Solo scene) and was foreshadowed by Poe “if the sun goes dark, we lose” and the sun went dark…senate destroyed…Han dead…So snoke saying “power up the laser to destroy the rebel base” leaves the question: But the sun is already gone, right?" Additionally, (spoiler free), the beginning of Last Jedi makes perfect sense without that scene.

  2. Maybe removing or cropping some frames could remove Chewie walking past Leah after returning at end? (Some complain about this, doesn’t really bother me. But seemed to me that maybe it wouldn’t be too hard to get rid of chewie there).

  3. Lastly, (totally subjective) I think the moment on Star Killer base when Han is nodding toward Rey climbing wall and Fin is asking why he is doing it…it annoys me every time. Reason for me is: Fins character, as shown, makes NO sense. His backstory is a great one. Abducted at young age. Not given name. Forced to have no identity, always follow any order…etc. Well, a character needs to logically flow from his or her backstory. “Chained by grandma to tree as child, beat often and fed scrap food…turns into sadistic serial killer.” But his character doesn’t flow from is backstory. He should be a bit scared and apprehensive toward his new-found freedom and self-determination…trying to find himself, find his own decision-making and morality, and identity “Who am I when not a number in a uniform?” Instead, he is one of the loudest and most consistent and defined characters – loud, extroverted, and challenging. It makes no sense. And any way to minimize that extroverted, confident, identity helps the character make more sense. But like I said, that is subjective. You already cut a few of them, but that one still stands out as “no way character this his backstory would act like that toward Han in that moment.”

Sorry, way longer than I expected when I started writing. Thanks for reading if you took the time. Please keep up the excellent work! Fans like me really really appreciate it.

Welcome to the site, and thank you for the review!

When you say that the beginning of The Last Jedi is fine without the XXXX scene, do you mean that the information that the XXXX is clearly established (avoiding spoilers if possible)? That would be a relief, since that’s the only reason the scene went in.

Well, I think it is addressed in the crawl (if I remember correctly. It was loud distracting energetic crowd. So I was having trouble focusing on the words).

There are the slight problems which would remain, namely the interpretation that the Resistance is blowing up the planet out of revenge, and that Chewie was responsible for the destruction of the Republic by not immediately blowing the charges before the weapon fired. So we would ideally include the Ackbar scene or some version of the weapon preparing to fire again. We would also need to split the aerial battle again to smooth over the scene transition.

Would the following work?

  • Detonate the charges
  • “The oscillator has been damaged but is still functional” - just like in the original, except the last words are heard over Poe’s radio.
  • “looks like our friends got in”
  • Forest battle part 1
  • Attack run (sans “prepare to fire”)
  • Forest battle part 2

And Hal’s gone to so much trouble to get that line replacement 😛

This sounds pretty great if the Ackbar line could be made to sound a little smoother. I think if Hal finds a good line replacement that says something like “weapon recharged in 30 seconds” or “reprimed” then that line would be a must. The more to help lessen any confusion.

Wouldn’t that add to the confusion though, since we wouldn’t then know what they’re firing at?

Hmm. I forget the exact flow of the original now, since my last few viewings were all edits. I’ll rewatch original again this weekend to refresh myself with what was actually removed. Maybe something will jump out at me.

Sorry 😦 Mostly because of continuity concerns with this edit. Perhaps I overstepped the bounds. My apologies. I’m new here and not familiar with the etiquette.

(I deleted any reference related to TLJ that isn’t directly related to continuity in previous posts)
