The audio is rough, because I don’t want to sort out the intricacies unless we like where this is going. I wanted to try to re-include only Jar Jar getting his tongue caught in the energy (without any other clowning around), and this is the way it seems the scene has to be in order to make that work. Unfortunately, there’s a necessary shot of him wildly dropping the wrench in reaction to Anakin calling for him.

With Ani starting the pod with a literal wrench in the engine, now I can’t expect anything other than an explosion.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Shit, you’re right. That’s damns subtle, though. I bet it’d be relatively easy to animate the wrench as falling past that opening rather than into it for a single digit number of frames, if the clip is good otherwise.

I’ve got something special to show you all later today, hopefully, too. 😉

I think it works fairly well and is definitely preferable to the “before the race” scene. I think if someone can animate the wrench falling past the engine it would definitely merit inclusion.

I’m definitely interested in seeing how this new version of Ep 1 turns out. I enjoyed the previous version quite alot, but I agree with previous comments that it’s not quite as perfect as your Ep 2 edit, which shocked me with how well it converted such an unenjoyable movie into such an enjoyable movie (however, I can’t comment on your Ep 3 edit because I refuse to accept the loss of Yoda vs. Palps).

That’s all you need, I like this MUCH better than the before the race scene. What I appreciate it is Jar Jar is still the, erm, comedic relief without being too much and over the top. There are a few options with the wrench being animated for any skilled person to do that hopefully!

I edited my other paragraph since I watched some clips, never-mind on my comment!

What’s interesting about the sound and the timing of the wrench falling into the pod is it’s timing and sound (thud) matches to the time it would fall through and hit the ground. It doesn’t make a metallic sound, but a dirt sound. Watch it a few times and you’ll see/hear. Plus, you see there is a corresponding hole where the wrench does fall through.

Now watching the original cut online during the scene … It doesn’t make sense if he was grabbing a the wrench in the fan … how would it have gotten there if you watch and hear the animation.

Dawn before the race" is nice though. My only issue with it is the unfinished sfx work.

Hmm, the “special” thing turns out not to be as easy as I had hoped. There’s a line of dialogue I was hoping to lift for 3PO from the Clone Wars series.
The line is, “…I was once the protocol droid to the chief negotiator for the entire Manakron system.” I was hoping to use a truncated version in place of, “I’m not sure this floor is entirely stable.”

However, the dialogue in Anakin’s room is not isolated to the center channel, and there is a lot of noise on the clip from TCW, leaving me with little to use!

Ah man, I want the special thing! Not easy when it comes to channels.

Sticks out like a sore thumb though, pretty different from most other deleted scenes in the 9000 series. I’m all in favor for the “it’s working!” scene.

Here’s about what the 3PO line would be like. I guess it depends on how badly we want it; it’s not perfect. But, when I gave it all I know how to give it, it certainly would not the most questionable audio decision included in these edits.

It sounds pretty good to me, don’t know about you.

I like the idea a lot… and its implementation sounds good to me !

Yeah Hal, it sounds 100% fine to me. This was a good idea to naturally establish that Anakin did not build 3PO from scratch!

I thought I had heard that the Clone Wars movie had the dialogue all on one track, but I guess that doesn’t apply to the TV show itself. Maybe that first fact isn’t even true though.

EDIT: Also, I was going to point out the same thing about the wrench in the Jar Jar clip. I think if you were to mask it falling in and then have it just hit the pod and then fall out of view somewhere else, it would work better. I like how you’re bringing a little Jar Jar humor back in. I think it works because the jokes aren’t being dragged out, you know? You still have funny moments, but they don’t overstay their welcome.

Not sure what’s so bad about that. Only thing I’d do would be to mix the need line a bit lower to match his surrounding dialogue. Otherwise I think it works and is a pretty cool change.

From my phone it sounds perfect Hal. Wow!

It’s not a slam dunk in 5.1, listening to each audio channel separately. However, I think a regular viewer would take it in just fine. I’ve brought it down in the mix slightly and I think it’ll work well enough after all.

I was actually looking around for 3PO dialogue to potentially replace, “I find that Jar Jar creature a bit odd” in the event that including some of Jar Jar’s tomfoolery doesn’t pan out. I stumbled onto a mention of this line of dialogue and thought it would be great to use if at all possible.

I suppose if we go with this new 3PO line, there’s two other scenes that should be altered:

Before the podrace: “Oh, my, space travel sounds rather perilous. I can assure you they will never get me onto one of those dreadful starships.”
Note that any replacement for this line should have some sort of similar punch because right afterward we smash cut to the beginning of the podrace lineup.

Then, in AOTC: “I’m not worried, R2, it’s just that I’ve never flown before.”

I am certain TCW (and maybe Rebels) have ample dialogue to borrow for these two. But before I hurt myself roving aimlessly, anyone have any ideas?

Have you ever thought about recording new commentaries for your new Prequel edits? You originally didn’t do one for The Force Awakens until you did your third revision.

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

No; I will adjust the existing commentaries to fit the new sync, and disclaim at the beginning that the commentary tracks were originally made for a prior version. I don’t hate myself quite that much. 😛

It’s good and I don’t believe it requires to mess with the wrench: we clearly hear it fall on the ground (and besides we are no pod experts…).
I would however suggest you to remove Anakin’s “Yes sir !”, which sounds a little bit ridiculous (it’s only located in the central channel iirc).

I think the music transition from Shmi and Qui-Gon’s conversation needs a bit of smoothing, but other than that it works well for me.

Author

I replaced Anakin’s, “Yes, sir” with “okay” from the dawn before the race deleted scene, and removed Jar Jar muttering “okay” as he bends down toward the wrench. I also brought the music that originally lead into the horrible children to a fade out a little earlier to coincide with a note that makes it sound deliberate.

I’d love for SirRidley to make a version of the crawls with the actual titles if possible. Would be cool to have both versions for those who prefer the original titles.
