Nice review, and I have to say the screen grabs don't look quoite as bad as I was expecting, and of course will look even better when moving...

However does anyone know if this 'bonus disc' is a DVD-5 or DVD-9 release?

Cheers,

Thanks for the review - some excellent points made there, hopefully LFL will take note... Loved the gag about Leia's make-up on the 2004 version, how true!

Anyhow I'm feeling less jumpy about these 'bonus' discs now, the screenshots have prepared me for what i'm actually gonna get.

You guys realise that Moth3r's transfer is equally sharp and detailed, has less grain and better colour fidelity, right?

Some of the comparison shots I've seen do seem to show that my laserdisc capture is slightly sharper and more detailed than the official DVDs - which is disappointing, but I don't know if these shots are truly representative of the DVD. You can however see that the colour was messed up in my ANH and TESB transfers (bit of a reddish tinge and not enough green/yellow).

That's okay, Moth3r. It's not like yours were THX-certified.

But isn't Moth3r's transfer from the PAL source? I am in the US and don't want to take the risk of "flicker" or speed up.

Then you want Dr. M's "Reinventing the wheel" transfer. It's a conversion of Moth3r's capture to the NTSC format.

Thanks for the info, Erikstormtrooper! Is this version anamorphic also? If so, I definitely need to look into getting that!!!

Mentasm, GREAT review! And since you mentioned it in your review, after I thought about it, I do think this release actually is intended for the casual fan in hopes of roping them in for future OUT releases. I expanded on those thoughts here.

They are DVD9.

There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

I wonder what Moth3r (or Citizen) could do with this new PAL source. It certainly seems to look better than the laserdiscs so with a slight hint of sharpening filters and anamorphic enhancement, we could be looking at a pretty damn nice looking transfer. I've got Moth3r's PAL trilogy and it looks absolutely great, execept for some colour (desaturated) and sound issues (too low). I have no doubt that those Sept. 12 DVD's can be made to look great using similar methods to the ones Moth3r used for his fine project. So IF Lucas desides this is the absoulute LAST release of the OUT, then at least we could be enjoying a great alternative.
