Off topic, but - the BBC gave a similar reason as to why Doctor Who is not yet available in HD. Apparently, creating the required amount of CGI and effects shots in HD would have doubled the cost and time of post-production. (Even with the "serious hardware" that the BBC probably has access to...)

Theres far to much talk about the PT in this thread!

Whilst it may be good to throw the odd occasional ideas for Jedi:Revisited for somewhere down the line, the topic at hand is primarily Empire:Revisited.

Ady has a big enough workload with this project alone, without getting side tracked about talk of two or three other projects on from here, that he may, or may not even be bothered to do in the end.

Just help him to focus on making the best he can do with what hes got.

Empire for me is arguably the best Star Wars film in the saga, so when its to the standard Ady is happy with, im sure most of us will appreciate the choices hes made.

Im just surprised no one has asked for a possible release date for this yet as thats usually the norm!

i know we cant really expect an exact release date to unforeseeable things that may occur in the future...which reminds me

how much are you backing up this one? i remember the tragic data loss of ANH:R, have you sufficient spare storage to properly backup?:S

I agree 100%. Let's see how the new PT gushers that usually have less than 20 posts to their name respond to this......

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

The word "pilot", especially in the SW universe can mean more than just flying in space or hundreds of feet or more above ground. In our world the term is also used for ships at sea, and that was even it's original meaning before planes were around. Podracing was indeed referred in the context of the movie as piloting. Although not necessarily very high above ground, it was piloting. Regardless of how accidental Anakin destroying the droid control ship seemed, I believe the force was guiding him even unbeknownst to him, remember how Qui-Gon said "Nothing happens by accident." Regardless of how he did it, Obi-Wan knew both these facts, so why in the heck would he not have thought Anakin was already a great pilot, especially for his age? He wasn't even on autopilot for the the second part of the trip.

1 a: one employed to steer a ship : helmsman b: a person who is qualified and usually licensed to conduct a ship into and out of a port or in specified waters c: a person who flies or is qualified to fly an aircraft or spacecraft2: guide, leader3: cowcatcher4: a piece that guides a tool or machine part5: a television show produced and filmed or taped as a sample of a proposed series6: pilot light 2

A lot of Kenobi's OT statements were vague and gave no details, leaving it all open for some wiggle room. This comes from hearing these statements for years and assuming they mean Anakin as an adult, when they don't specify his age or circumstances. When they seemed to contradict what we had in our imaginations, some screamed contradiction. I doubt anyone new to SW would have this problem if they watch the films 1 thru 6 for the first time because they didn't have all that time to fill in the blanks based on the vague Kenobi OT statements.

But as said above, enough on the prequels.

As long as your video editing program has multiple video tracks, this will work.  I put the 1080p version on video track one, then above it, on video track two, I put a 480p version of the same film, frame accurate to the HD version.  I then set video track one to be invisible, and just made sure that every change I made to my visible 480p footage, was also done to the 1080p version.  Basically, every edit you make is made twice, then when it was time to encode, I set video track one to be visible, and video track two to be invisible.  It still slows things down excessively, but only during the final encoding stage.  I'm not sure if this information may be helpful to you, or how stressful, if implemented, it would make editing with all the color correction/fx layering you do (which I would imagine takes up more than two video tracks).  But I thought you might find a way to temper the method to make 1080p editing work for you.

Interestingly, this is basically how movies are edited.  A 480p version is edited on a computer that has timecodes stamped into it.  Once that's done being edited, it's taken to a ridiculously powerful workstation, and there the 480p version is recreated identically in 2k or 4k, then printed to film.  The 480p edit is an "off-line" edit, and the 2/4k edit is the "on-line" edit.

Just a little tidbit I thought may be interesting.

I'm a newcomer to all this and have just breezed thru the 2 threads of these new versions. Apologies for being a little off-topic I just want to sum up my thoughts.

I'm downloading a copy of ANHR on emule which I should have in a few days.

From what I've read I'm amazed at the work that's gone into this and the screenshots are a big improvement.

A lot of the decisions have been made are the right ones IMO and seem to be what the fans want. Undoing a lot of SE crap and fixing mistakes and dated stuff. I'm also pleased that the next installments will be 720P - another good move.

ESB should mainly be a restoration job, there really isn't that much wrong with it compared to the other films.

I know it's not the popular view but in a lot of ways ROTJ is my favorite. Jabba scenes / Emperor scenes / and Final Death star battle are some of my favorite parts of the series. Just try to forget the whole ewok thing.

4K is on the way, IMAX theaters are supposed to convert this year

Oh, PLEASE tell me that's not true!  IMAX footage that's edited digitally needs to be scanned in at 8k to preserve all the detail (IMAX scenes for "The Dark Knight" were scanned in at 8k, while all 35mm scenes were done in 4k) - if IMAX, a format that touts itself as being the highest resolution currently possible, trumping even all them newfangled "digital formats" (which it is and does) converts to *4k* digital projection, it'll be completely pointless beyond being something projected on a giant screen, which you can get anyway if you go to a movie theater and sit in the 4th or 5th row (I saw WALL-E that way and I didn't have to strain my neck, but still could see nothing but movie :-D).

Search it there is alot of articles some with good details some not so good, scanning back over a couple of them looks like it will be a Sony 4k projectors. The reoson seems to be the cost of shooting full lenth movies with IMAX cameras so now more movies can be in IMAX format. Back to ESB talk its hard not to get off subject since most of use are all of us have the same interest movies, cinema etc...

Jor Tallen, the info on SW.com that I was referring to is not EU stuff....it is a deeper picture from Lucas himself of what the Clone Wars were all about, in preparation for the new Clone Wars CGI movie coming out Aug. 15. OK....no more PT stuff for now, although I must admit it will be interesting to see Ady's edits of these in the future. Now back to Quad Core and Empire, this is going to be good....

well the quad core came this morning. Installed in about 5 mins and everything is running sweet. I've been able to redo about 80% of everything i had done so far  for ESB:R already in glorious 720p. i should be back to the pre-720p stage by tomorrow. I didn't think it would take as quick as it has to redo everything. Good thing is that i was able to do a bit more tweaking to the first colour pass and things are looking a lot better now.

Whoa, scrub that comment. Sounds like you may NOT have enough work to be getting on with at this pace!

How about a possible release date then ;-)

i can't give a release date. I can't tell how long this will take for a while yet. sorry

on another note, i'm not sure if anyone noticed a request i posted a while ago because no one answered.

i am looking for some pictures of the model used for the Hoth shield generator but i can't seem to find any online. I'm not looking for captures from the movie but ones of the actual model used. I hope someone out there has some.

Also i'm in need of pictures of the buildings from bespin used in the SE if anyone has any. i need the pictures to be good quality and hopefully high res too, but anything will help at the moment

thanks

Whoa, i won something!

I'd just like to take this oppertunity to thank my work colleagues, my friends and most importantly my family for their continued support.........

Now I'M straying off topic, after saying we should focus on the topic at hand!

Gonna have a dig through my starwars folder, but i dont think i can help on that one Ady. I know i have models of the ships but....

There was a web site with pictures of the models used in the trilogy somewhere.

Ady, I looked for a model of the generator on Hoth but couldnt find anything that good. All I could find was a lego model of the generator. I found some cross sections of Echo base and the Ion canon, maybe someone has the actual book and knows if theres a cross section of the generator?

Also, if I remember correctly you use Adobe After Effects to correct light sabers. Im not sure if you ever heard of this plugin from Videocopolit (another forum member recommended it to me) so I messed around with it and I thought it may be useful, I just thought it may help out. (If you would like to try it I think you just click on "Project" and it automatically downloads the plugin)

I found these pics:

I'm not sure how accurate this one is or where it came from. It might be CG:

http://www.chienworks.com/~aramisangel/sw/tech/shieldgen.jpg

It seems a little different (in coloration) from the image used for the SW Card Game:

http://www.wizards.com/global/images/swtcg_article_GreatBattlesHoth_pic1_en.jpg

I can't see the first pic. It says that I don't have permission to access that file.

Anyway, Adywan, this is all I found:

That probably won't cut it, but it's all I found.
