SW Laserdiscs

I recently bought a laserdisc player and I'm curious about which SW set I should get for it. Should I get the original releases, the thx releases or the definitive collection?

...and "Faces" if the Def. Col. is prohibitively expensive (especially shipping.)

JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

The DEFINITIVE collection will be pricey in all likelyhood, but the Faces set I think is pretty darn good quality. I have both.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

The Faces set is also easier to just sit and watch.

Yeah, less discs. Qaulity about the same.

Thank you all for your help. I'm wanting the closest to the originals as possible, the main reason i got the LD player, but I'm also interested in the collectability of the definitive collection. Aren't the faces discs altered from the original? If so, maybe I'll just get the originals and the DC.

Well, THX mastering has different meanings at different times. They have "temporal smoothing" applied to the video, which is intended as video noise reduction, but also results in loss of detail on moving objects (see various discussions in preservation & fan edits about this). This applies to the DefCol as well (but both sets are OT, not SE).

They are actually both THX mastered, but the Faces set is newer (and the DC is actually rife with mastering errors.)

As to the temporal smoothing, the reason it caused problems is because after each frame was "smoothed" by comparison with the previous frame, the subsequent "smoothed" frame was used to fix the next one, instead of the original unsmoothed frame. This led to loss of detail and ghosting. In this respect, the non-THX versions actually have a leg up in quality.

so we're agreeing that the thx versions would be the choice ones to get then correct?

Um, I think so - I'll PM you to double check.

I will also agree that the Faces set is a great set. The definitive collection is great, but not sure the extra cost makes it worth it. The older, pre THX sets are cheaper, but not as good. But they are better than the VHS of the same era.
