Merry Christmas, Adywan! I didn’t check, but is Beru’s mono voice still in this new version?
I don’t see why it wouldn’t be.

Imo, Han his panic screaming reaction does seem a bit more justified when walking into a full hangar of troops. Pretty sure he and Chewie never stopped to look back and count how many followed after they bolted it. For me personally, the full hangar is one of the better changes in the SE…
Great update on the work, Adywan, thanks!

I agree. But as is with the added Dewback shots, the added Stormtroopers in the back have the ROTJ helmets.

I feel like it hits the same as a lot of SE changes. It makes sense and isn’t a bad idea, but it was over done. Like 5-10 extra troopers would have been enough, they didn’t need 100-300 extra. But unless we’re talking reshooting with a couple of 501st guys on a green screen… yeah it think its fine as is.

Some of it is WAY overdone, but there are a few shots there of the deathstar melting from different angles that look great.

You’re tearing me apart Lisa!!
A lovely find though i doubt it will ever make it into this edit.
I think some of these shots look fantastic, If you had one or two frames of the rupuring, before it cuts to the wide shot for the explosion that would look awesome. But anything more would ruin the timing of the music queue. Its a challenge becuase on one hand, I’d like to see a beautiful shot, on the other, I’d rather keep the thematic 3, 2, 1… Boom! Luckily its not up to me: Adywan, you are our only hope.
Hey Ady! Glad to hear you are on the mend!
Have you ever considered restoring the Han versus the Stormtroopers with the original 1977 version?
Part of the comedic charm of the original version is the Stormtroopers realizing “Hey… we out number him! Why are we running?”
But then in the 1997 and onward edits, they just bait him into running towards a big room filled with more goons. In my opinion, it loses a bit of the humor that the original had.
Just curious!
(The screengrab does use the recomposited shot from SW:R)
Oh this is a shot that i’ve always hated in the SE. Not only are the added stormtroopers wearing ROTJ helmets, but the compositing is horrendous. The original footage just doesn’t blend in at all with the new. No shadows or floor reflections, the new foreground stormtroopers look very soft/ blurry, yet the troops in the background on the gantry are sharper and in focus. The problem was i just couldn’t replace it with a shot from 4k77 because it stands out as being a different source and lower quality, even with grain reduction ( which to eliminate the grain to a point needed for it to match the blu-ray sources would destroy so much detail). But there’s a lot more software that can be used lately that has enabled me to enhance the 4k77 footage to get it to the quality of the blu-rays. I did try using topaz video enhance AI , which is a great starter to use to help with the grain problem, but that just couldn’t handle it without giving it a weird effect. But splitting the scene into an image sequence i was able to run them through Topaz photo AI and this worked so much better. Of course this was only used as a starting point and can’t be solely used because of anomalies these AI software introduce to the image ( you only have to look at the latest so called restorations of James Cameron’s films for the 4K releases to know what i’m talking about). So there was still a lot more work to do , like dust/ scratch repair, but i have now been able to swap out the SE shot for the original.

Han’s screaming stopped when he came face to face with the troopers. The screaming was more scare tactics as he was chasing them rather than fear. And Han looks back to shoot at the following troopers as they run away. The origina IMO works so much better.

It’s scary just how fast this AI Video generation is progressing. While its pretty cool to see , there’s nothing in there that would work in the film. The Death Star needs to explode in an instant. Seeing a progression like this just ruins the tension in the scene.
I’m probably being stupid, but how can you tell between the ANH helmets and the ROTJ helmets?
Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.
The mouth grid and the top of the eyes are giveaways.

It’s as if they got dumber. the latter ones look terrible! Full-on facial deformity!

Wonderful!
The Skywalker Saga:
I · II · III · IV · V · VI · VII · VIII · IX
This is the way.
It all looks superb!

What’s really strange is how many of the changes made to the OT over the years just showed how much George Lucas had a problem with seeing the forest for the trees, as most of these changes, despite how much effort was put into them, are mostly self-contained and mess with the continuity of other scenes. The disappearing rocks in front of R2, the Stormtrooper helmets in ANH’s new scenes being the ROTJ helmets, the Cloud City windows being open in one shot, but are the pre-SE windows in later shots, the shot that makes Jabba’s palace door look bigger, etc.
I can see why George made the edit, but as with most changes it was over zelous. People can debate the character implications plenty, there is ofc no right or wrong answers there, but I think there is one objective issue with the original version. Why would there be a corridor, lined with dozens of blast doors, turn the corner and end in a complete dead end. Like yes the hanger is badly composited and yes the 10,000 idle troopers is silly, but man pipes? It’s a show of the limited budget and from everything Lucas has said over the years, anything that held him back, if it be money or technical limitations, seemed to irritate him. Consitantly these are areas he chooses to edit the most.
What do you think of encoding the audio into Dolby TrueHD instead of DTS-HD Master Audio? Is it possible?

Personally, do you prefer the hanger, or the pipes?

Sorry I explained it wrong, I meant his entire reaction and panic expression to the full hangar. You are correct that the screaming stopped. My opinion stands though, that it just works a bit better logically and the flaws (helmets and compositing) you mention are blink-and-you’ll-miss errors.
BUT! I of course respect your decision to revert back to the original. Despite this, I’m sure your edit will remain my only viewing of ANH (like it has been with Empire:R and the SD version of ANH you released so long ago).
Re: the dead end – I prefer its simplicity and that it’s entirely reasonable that some multi-level equipment within the Death Star would require sections of levels to be closed off. In other words, the Death Star’s design layout isn’t entirely dissimilar to the Black Mesa layout.
Re: the restoration – fantastic work, Ady! The 4K77 preservation has really improved the potential quality of despecialized segments within Revisited.

Well its doesn’t really matter what i prefer and tbh i dont feel it makes a huge difference either way.
That said world building wise i prefer a hanger (not filled with 10,000 troopers, maybe 20?) over a dead end corridor. However, given the two final outcomes avaiable its ofc the shot which works better. Which is the pipes.
Well for what it’s worth…
My favorite part about the SE version is that it opens up the Death Star more (similar to adding windows for Cloud City), especially when comparing it to the original “dead-end” hallway version, which pretty much does show the limitations at the time as Telion already nicely put it.
As for the garrison of 100+ troopers standing around in formation, I never had a problem with seeing them as some might. I view it as the same reason why a real-life military base would have this also - for inspection, etc. And prior to this scene, didn’t we just hear a Stormtrooper mention that they do drills (“Maybe it’s another drill”)? So for me anyway, I just assume they do frequent drills and this is just a glimpse of what that they have to go through at times.
As for the ROTJ helmets, in all honesty, I hadn’t noticed that before and even now that I am aware of it, it still doesn’t really bother me as there are several bodies/heads moving around in a brief shot and so, to me at least, it’s not that easy to focus on a relatively minor detail like that… and I often like to think I’m someone with a sharp eye XD Furthermore, who’s to say they aren’t currently trying to phase in the new armor type (hence the inspection)? 😉 But, I get it, consistency is nice too so I do understand why Ady or anyone could be irritated by that; truly, they should’ve just had the proper ANH helmets in the first place. If this were to be re-reinstated, though, maybe a quick digital touch-up on the more obvious ones?
As for the compositing of that shot, while not perfect as Ady had stated, I felt it was vastly improved by just the simple color-correction. It’s great to fix as much of the egregious errors as possible, but if we’re being real and honest, I think it’s perfectly acceptable, at least in certain instances where only so much can realistically be done, to accept a shot/scene at 95-99.9% perfection - though Ady will always strive for 100% perfection and that’s what we love about him!
And I understand, Braltika, what you were trying to say in regards to Han’s reaction to seeing all of the additional soldiers - it does further justify the sheer and utter panic on his face like “oh I f*cked up!”. That’s what I always thought too and also why I like the SE version. I will admit, though, I did like what you said, DZ-330, about the charm of the original, where the Stormtroopers have realized “Hey… we out number him! Why are we running?” That is indeed funny too and a fair point.
But, with all things considered, I do think I overall prefer the SE version between the two. Unless, if there could be some kind of compromise, like if Ady could replace the current “dead-end” background with something better of his own? Even if it is just more hallway (similar to the moc image DZ-330 quickly put together). I’m sure getting the reflections on the floor will be a task, but Ady seemed to do a miraculous job for the wide-shot during the Obi-Wan vs Vader duel. Just an idea, but I think it could be neat have a (closed) blast door instead of the dead-end, and when Han gets there, the door has already mostly opened up to reveal maybe a 2x6 grid of marching troopers accompanied by a K2 droid (just a fun nod to RO - which I truly hope Ady may have been able to sneak one in a hallway somewhere here and/or there, seamlessly and not in-your-face). Maybe? Something like that would be a good middle-ground.
Anyway that’s all of my two cents, but obviously Ady you have the final say in all this and we’ll be super happy with the end result! 😄
It’s scary just how fast this AI Video generation is progressing.
It really is. Not all are great, of course, but I’ve seen some other very convincing AI work out there in the right hands. Who knows, if done right, sparingly and when necessary, perhaps it could be a useful tool and open new doors for some edit ideas you might have for ROTJ:R, which might’ve been thought impossible merely a year ago?
I can’t believe I didn’t cover the dead end/hanger in my Wired article. In short, they had a hanger in 1976, they had stormtroopers, they could have done this if that was the plan. The same two troopers wearing the wrong helmet copy and pasted a hundred times was just proving that they could to this for the prequels if they wanted to for clones. Cutting the existing troopers out without the help of a bluescreen was a test to see if they needed to depend on bluescreens for the prequels. It’s a bad idea poorly executed only added to test prequel technology, just like most of the other SE changes.
