I may well recognize that they may make technically superior films to the OT, and frankly you could already make a case for TFA,

As it pertains to STAR WARS and especially Return of The Jedi. Sure, but ESB is nearly flawless.

Edit:

For me? No. No matter how good future Star Wars films are, they’ll all share the fatal flaw of not making an impression on me as a child. The originals will always have that magical nostalgia value that it’s literally impossible to overcome.

I want to commend you for saying what a lot of fans will not.

The Empire Strikes Back didn’t even top Star Wars '77. It’s still by far the greatest Star Wars movie.

And while I’m here:

ESB
SW
ROTJ (throne room’s pros > Ewok’s cons)
TFA
TPM (only b/c of duel of the fates)
AOTC
ROTS

I know that’s your opinion and all but in what regard does it beat ESB “by far”?

Star wars is the best star wars movie.

How about that…

Empire strikes back is nearly better but it falls short but only just.

Then Return of the Jedi comes in with the bronze.

The force awakens get’s an honorable mention.

The others are just plain losers in the race.

This could get more complicated in a few years though

The only thing I see STAR WARS having a leg over ESB is it’s score. And that’s just a maybe. ESB outclasses STAR WARS in terms of plot, pacing, action, acting , special effects and just about every other term I can conjure up in my mind. Also ESB is alot more enjoyable to watch in my opinion.

Star Wars is far better paced than Empire strikes back. Star Wars ends on a high. The special effects are more or less on par with each other.

It’s only my opinion but I did say that Empire is very nearly better but there are a few things that stop it topping Star wars. But I think Empire is better than Star Wars in some ways.

Overall I hand the gold medal to Star Wars.

After C3P0 and R2 crash on Tatooine the film doesn’t pick up back again until R2 runs off to find Obi-Wan. ESB is constantly exciting and there’s no lull like there is in STAR WARS.

Star Wars ends on a high

ESB ends on a low. There are so many things left unfinished that it makes you want to watch ROTJ immediately afterward. I can’t say the same for STAR WARS.

I would actually rate Empire winning over Star Wars on music score but around 35% of it was cut from the film and or re-written but also the music was clumsily edited the amount of times there is fade cut before a crescendo losses it points to Star wars

Furthermore handling of certain scenes such as the probe droid crashing twice also loses the film serious points.

Timeline alterations and scene re-arrangements out of sequence in Empire vs Star Wars “locked editing” and the music all coming together without any of the afore mentioned clumsy music editing.

I Crown Star wars Winner.

But if it was not for those things I would crown empire winner but it dropped the ball as far as I am concerned.

ESB is my favorite Star Wars movie, because it’s the most artfully made film of the bunch and contains the most crucial parts of the overall mythology and the highest drama, but if we’re trying to decide which is the “greater film” (which is a stupid thing to worry about), it has the major disadvantage of being unable to function on its own. SW works as its own self-contained story, as the first act in a trilogy, and as a middle chapter in the overall saga, whereas ESB by design can’t be anything other than Act II.

It would also be a huge mistake to undervalue the fact that SW created that whole world. Sure, ESB expanded on it beautifully, but the bulk of the true invention is in that first film.

Okay, more special effects doesn’t mean more well done special effects. ESB has a lot more special effects work, and a lot of it is fantastic, but I would say the effects in Star Wars outclass ESB in that they are far more seamless throughout the whole film, whereas in Empire, there are a lot more issues with matte boxes and blue screen lines.

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.

That’s only because there are more special effects. If STAR WARS had the same amount the number of especial effects as ESB these same problems would be more abundant in STAR WARS. But that’s because both films are products of their time and both aged relatively well IMO.

They’ve aged very well. I was just saying that more special effects doesn’t mean more well done, and here I am repeating myself. You said ESB outshines SW in special effects, but it only does so in number and not in quality, so that isn’t really outshining it.

Lord Haseo although I will agree that Empire Has a more intricate and complicated plot when it comes to Pacing that out…

Let’s look at Empires Pacing.

Empire does pace faster than Star wars and John Doom here a member summed it up pretty well. That it keeps on presenting a new danger or threat just when you think the characters are out of trouble a new threat or danger rears it’s ugly head.

This is very well executed and works Amazingly well but it also does not know when to stop… Causing a problem of not knowing when to slow down a bit for it’s own good. Especially as we have been talking in your other thread about this issue. It is a well known common complaint of both How long did Luke spend on Dagobah and How long did the Falcon take to get to Bespin.

Star Wars does not have issues of this nature it flows it speeds up and it slows down for it’s own good and when things really heat up it goes absolutely ballistic.

The scenes on The Falcon and the scenes on Degobah are slower scenes though so there were lulls but they weren’t long enough for anyone to get bored. Much of the same can be said for STAR WARS after R2 runs off to find Obi-Wan.

Many will disagree about ranking AOTC over TPM. But AOTC actually contained some stuff that were the reasons I wanted to see the prequels, like a big ass Jedi/Clone battle. Where as even though TPM is a much better made movie overall (Still sh*t though) it has Jar Jar (and to a lesser extent little Annie) in it for most of the running time. He’s the most irritating character in the history of mainstream movies and it’s difficult to “enjoy” anything else about that movie as a result. If a highly skilled faneditor/FX-artist ever digitally erased Jar Jar from every single pixel of TPM, then sure I’d probablly rank it as the “least worst” prequel. But so far (To my knowledge) they haven’t yet, so it’ll stay bottom for me.

At least AOTC has Kenobi in it for more than 5 minutes and he does things that significantly effect the plot. At least the villain has more than 4 lines (With Christopher Lee’s voice) and does things that significantly effect the plot. The final LS duel actually has some emotion behind it, despite also being almost totally cr*p. At least they got rid of the botched puppet Yoda. Sadly with a CGI Yoda but you can tell the FX-artists really tried. etc.

By god! You’re right about the prequels. I feel so conflicted. Your points make so much sense, but all these other opinions are just nibbling at me from all angles. I think the PT has been the source of more of my opinion changes than any other films. I just want to be happy with my opinions, damn it why did your post have to make so much sense?

It was already topped in 1983.

But for those that don’t agree… Disney have infinite typewriters and infinite monkeys, so one day yes.

I actually find myself feeling more charitable about the prequels ever since TFA came out. I still rank them far below the other films, but now that the franchise is growing again and moving in a direction that I like, much of the anger and resentment I felt toward the PT has dissipated.
