But it is 15-20 minutes shorter than each PT movie, so it’s got that going for it.

But it feels like it is about 15-20 minutes longer than the entire prequel trilogy, so it’s going that going against it.

Updated ranking:

  1. A New Hope (1977)
  2. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
  3. Return of the Jedi (1983)
  4. Revenge of the Sith (2005)
  5. The Phantom Menace (1999)
  6. The Last Jedi (2017)
  7. Attack of the Clones (2002)
  8. The Force Awakens (2015)
  9. Rogue One (2016)

I should probably put 5 and 6 as equals… or switch them… not sure… the fact is: I kinda like TLJ. Johnson failed many things but his entry has a soul and a heart that are worthy of the best (and the worst !) of Lucas era. And it looks GORGEOUS ! (seriously, it doesn’t look cheap like TFA, it’s beautifuly crafted and epic). And in a way TLJ is more a sequel to ROTS than a sequel to TFA.

edit: since I’m not a troll, I won’t put the Holiday special or the Ewok tvmovies in the list (let’s be serious: ranking them higher than the entire PT is pure trolling guys…)

How is that any more trollish than putting Rogue One or TFA below the PT?

The Holiday Special, with the exception of a total of maybe 40 seconds, isn’t funny or interesting.

Not on purpose, no. But I enjoy boggling over what they were going for and how it turned out to be what it is.
That’s far more than I get outta watching the PT.
(Note, I only watched the HS once, over 10 years ago and will likely never do it again.)
(JEDIT- same goes for the PT.)

Not more trollish than putting RotJ below any Disney entry 😉

Because they are arguably more unpleasant to watch.

It can be boggled over without being watched. I’m very opposed to anyone watching the HS ever. And the PT. And the Clone Wars movie. And the Clone Wars cartoon, for that matter. And the Ewok films. And the ST, now that you mention it. And the standalone films. How about this: if it isn’t the original version of one of the original three live-action Star Wars films, don’t watch it. That’s my platform on the Star Wars franchise.

Well, I liked R1 and I LOVE ESB:R, so I’m out.

I will only be ranking theatrical releases (anything else was never meant to be on par with the rest of the films). I like all of these movies. It might seem like I hate them but really I’m just nitpicking an otherwise excellent film.

  1. Empire Strikes Back- one of the few movies ever where I wouldn’t change a single thing.
  2. A New Hope- the one that started it all, this will be a classic forever. But over time the age starting to show (unlike Empire which somehow hasn’t aged much for me). And Leia and Vader weren’t very interesting until later. But everything else is amazing.
  3. The Force Awakens- I remember sitting in the theater for the first time reading the crawl, and as I read “Luke Skywalker has vanished” I just knew this would be good- and its often overlooked. The similarities to ANH don’t bother me except for Death Star III. Before TLJ I passed Rey’s powers as ancient heritage, considering the reveal was on TLJ I’ll let it pass. Everything else is really fun.
  4. The Last Jedi- Parts of this movie I love, parts I hate. It took me a while to place it. My problem isn’t what most people point too, but rather how poorly Rey was handled. She has no real arc and disappears for a while at the end. During the “give me my hand” scene I found myself routing for Kylo.
  5. Return of the Jedi- This movies doesn’t have a clear focus, the first part is about getting Han and the second about a Death Star 2. But Luke’s turn to the dark side is my favorite moment in the entire saga. ROTJ is an enjoyable adventure worthy of the Star Wars name.
  6. Revenge of the Sith- It’s filled with cringy dialogue and one confusing plot, but ROTS has a vision, unlike the lower 3. John Williams brings it up with great music and while there are way too many lightsabers duels (5, equal to all the other Lucas movies combined) they are entertaining. Plus this paved the way for TCW, a great show.
  7. Rogue One- The action is spectacular, but everything else flops. The characters are boring and the plot is more stupid than ROTS. Most importantly, it lacks vision. My first viewing was a lot of fun- my second and third were boring. They should have done something different- maybe the entire movie a heist for the plans? Idk. K2SO and Vader were the only additions to the SW universe I liked.
  8. The Phantom Menace- Not a very good movie, but you can still watch it for mild enjoyment. The final duel is amazing, and that’s it for positives.
  9. Attack of the Clones- What is the overall plot? Who are the characters? What is the theme? Is there any real props? Did the finale accomplish anything? What is the point of AOTC? All good questions. AOTC only exists to bridge the gap between TPM and ROTS, and it shows. This movie isn’t worth my time.
  10. The Clone Wars Movie- No.

His temporary turn when gets angery over Leia’s name and cuts Vader’s hand off.

Oh yeah, gotcha. That should have been obvious, but I am a silly person.

They were just taking a nap!!!

Yep. That conversation is over. Frink and I have seen how wrong our interpretation of that scene has been.
“I can’t breathe!” really means “I’m SO sleepy!”

What about when he killed the Rancor and made its poor handler cry? That’s pretty dark.

Come on, the Rancor was also sleeping. You can hear the cute little snoring he does after the gate comes down on him.

JEDIT: Damn Ray’s was better.

No no no. The rancor fell asleep and used that door as a blanket.
The handler was so relived that the thing was finally getting some Z’s that it brought tears of joy.

What about when he blew up the sail barge and everyone on it?

What’s wrong with choking evil pigmen to death, trying to kill the most evil man alive, and cutting off the hand of one of the most dangerous mass-murderers in the galaxy? I’d say the guy who doesn’t do that is way more evil than Luke.

Bad feelings are bad, m’kay?

Seriously, though, if Luke had slain Palpatine in rage then became God Emperor of Dune Tatooine, that would’ve made ROTJ a much better movie.
