Also Akira admittedly is one hell of a movie. Don’t have much interest in anime though. Not crazy about tentacles.
I’d just like to reiterate that I, personally, don’t hate anime. I’m pretty indifferent to it, actually, since I haven’t had much exposure to it.

The style of a lot of anime from the 80’s to the mid 90’s I find particularly appealing. This is from Magnetic Rose:
The detail is reminiscent of the greebling done on Star Wars miniatures, at least to me.
Also there’s One Punch Man, which is highly recommended:
It’s a humorous and intelligent commentary on many genres of anime, especially the more derivative ‘Shonen’ genre. Good animation here as well.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

So much this.
I wonder if there’s any anime with Cthulhu. That’d really drive Frink insane.

I still can’t understand how animation media specifically from Japan is inherently juvenile.
One thing that I can hardly stand is the kind of person who sees “anime” differently from other animated media. Even use of the term “anime” bothers me at times, because it’s already displaying it as being different from other “cartoons”. I say this regarding both sides of the matter.
I have a close friend who’s the kind of guy who pretty much takes anime religiously (not like he literally worships anime). He will watch any anime because it’s anime. He doesn’t like all anime because it’s anime, but it will still get special consideration for being anime. I love the guy, but I am constantly bothered by his mindset on anime.
Then you have people like Tyrphanax seems to be. They think all anime is terrible and juvenile, because it’s anime. It’s like they have this hateful grudge against it’s existence. Or my racism jokes might actually be true for some, who knows?
Tyrphanax has insinuated his being annoyed by the use of goofy/over-the-top artistic expressions in anime. If you don’t like the way most Japanese artists display such things, that’s fine. Nobody should be forced to like anything. I just ask that you stop being so insulting whenever you speak about it; to the content, the creators, and the viewers.
Also, thinking about the topic of expressions, I’d just like to make a note. Most animated TV series’ in Japan started out as comic books. I’m pretty sure that a lot of the development of those expressions happened through the motionless pictures on the page, not on the small screen.

Well these kind of childish statements doesn’t really support that claim.

Well it is different. The term “anime” is used (at least in the west) to describe a style of animation from Japan.

Or does it further support my claim that anime is dumb?

Well, that’s not my point. Anime simply refers to Japanese animation, and the inherent styles (the term is a shortening of “animation” spelled in the romanization of phonetic Japanese: animēshon).
People see anime differently than animation from any other country. There are specific trends and styles in anime that make it almost instantly recognizable. What makes it so special, and why is it that people often fail to realize that anime is not all the same exact style?
Western art often has a generalized look to it, but I certainly doubt anybody thinks that all western artists draw in the same style. Why can’t people see differences in Japanese art?
Just because you can see similarities and similar inspirations in various pieces of Japanese art and animation, that doesn’t mean it’s all the same. Most Japanese comic art and animation is of a trending style, just like in America.
EDIT: To stay kind of on topic…
From Dragon Ball:
From One Piece:
Different art styles with visible similarities.

I guarantee that animal that is looking up the poor girl’s skirt is hiding some seriously long tentacles.
I used to watch Dragon Ball and One Piece when I was younger. Dragon Ball was really perverted, and I watched a heavily censored version of One Piece, so it might be even more perverted. Nowadays all anime creeps me out.

Well no one said all anime are the same. Still they are distinct from western animation. One of the main distinction that is common to all is the language.
