Opening Crawl for Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Since “The Last Jedi” will pickup right where “The Force Awakens” left off, what is your opinion on what the opening crawl could be? Below is the one I have written for Episode VIII. If you have written one, please share!

STAR
WARS

Episode VIII
THE LAST JEDI

Tragedy has struck the New
Republic. After the deaths of
millions caused by the First
Order’s sinister Starkiller Base,
tensions are growing strong
within the RESISTANCE.

Little do they know that
Supreme Leader Snoke is about
to begin training Kylo Ren
in the dark secrets of the
FORCE. With this ancient
knowledge, the Resistance will
stand no chance against them.

General Leia Organa has sent Rey
to retrieve her brother, Luke
Skywalker, from his self-induced
exile, as he is the last hope to
save the galaxy from the treachery
of the First Order…

We’re definitely going to pick up right after TFA ended. But I highly doubt they’d do that before the crawl. I suspect they might even open it with a scene depicting Hux delivering Kylo to Snoke.

I don’t see how this solves your purported problem. So you’d rather have the crawl recap only the last scene of the film?

That way they can jump ahead spatially - even if just for a day or two. I am really interested to see how the confrontation plays out, but I don’t want a crawl that recaps the last film…

Maybe they’ll use the crawl to give us some political exposition to satisfy all the grumpy prequel lovers

I know we’ll pick up right where we left off in terms of time, but there’s no reason to the film has to begin with Luke and Rey on Ahch-to. I wouldn’t be surprised if we go fifteen or twenty minutes before we actually pick up that thread. I think it’s more likely we start with the traditional pan from crawl to spaceship and then check in with Leia and Poe and Finn and maybe even Snoke and Hux and Kylo before we get our first taste of Rey and Luke interaction.

Perhaps if you wanted to start your film with Rey meeting Luke, you could have not put it at the end of your last film.

But that’s none of my business.

Movie opens with a traditional crawl against a starfield.

Pan down to reveal the island at night, with the starfield being the night sky. It’s the very early morning prior to Rey’s arrival, where we are introduced briefly to Luke and see the last scene from a different perspective.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Two different "you"s there. One JJ, one Rian. Rey finding Luke was the conclusion of the story JJ was telling. Rey meeting Luke just happens to be the beginning of the story Rian is telling. Just because it’s never been done before in a SW doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be.

Wait… is this something that’s not a rehash? Surely that can’t be the case.
