This is actually interesting though. He may not think the OOT is coming out, doesn’t mean he likes the constant revision: https://mobile.twitter.com/pablohidalgo/status/777605840891064320

This is refreshing to see.

You would’ve never heard an LFL employee saying anything negative about the revisions while George was still in charge.

What we have to remember is that George still left one of his good friends in charge of his company. She probably feels a certain obligation to honor his wishes. Didn’t someone ask her about the possibility of a restored OOT at a convention two or three years ago? I seem to recall reading that she gave a very calculated response of neither “yes” nor “no.”

Restoring the OOT should be the most important non-political issue right now. But unfortunately, releasing the OOT has become so low in everyone’s priority that should it happen, the laws of physics might fall apart.

How can you expect the world to have any motivation or hope left after that thread? It is all your fault!

In that case, I wonder why George’s “good friend” threw out his treatments.

C.S. Lewis died over 50 years ago, ownership has passed well beyond personal friends, family and loyalists to the nameless faceless Harper Collins profit center, and yet it’s still not possible to buy a new copy of the Narnia series in the original publication order.

Yes, I know it’s not quite analogous to Star Wars because you can reorder the books yourself, old copies aren’t lower quality than newer copies, etc, etc. But nevertheless it illustrates that if someone widely perceived to be the creator of something, years after it’s already been released to the public, wishes it to be distributed in a different, boneheaded, mangled way that makes no sense to most fans, that wish carries a lot of weight for a long time.

EDIT: Yes, I know it’s also arguable that Lewis even wanted it to be distributed that way at all, or if he was just being accommodating in an exchange with with an enthusiastic fan. The idea that a desire that unclearly expressed can have such lasting impact makes it so much worse.

^ Also, some of the Narnia books had special revisions for the American versions made by Lewis during proofs. These have since been “standardized” so that, though modern printings of the American Narnia books still have American spellings, otherwise they have all the same text otherwise as the UK English versions.

But, books and movies being what they are, paperbacks of the original US Narnia editions are still far easier to come by than high-quality copies of the OOT.

I may never see the originals legally again in my lifetime. This is beyond unfair; it’s unthinkable that the REAL versions of the OT have been gone for twenty years.

In this age of 4K & widescreen TVs, laserdisc quality is the best we will ever get for decades to come.

George Lucas knew what he was doing when he sold SW down the river to Disney.

Since I was posting about this very subject in the theatrical vs special edition subforum just yesterday…

We really have no idea.

They could release it next year, or the year after, or five years from now.

It honestly wouldn’t surprise me if Disney simply decides to wait out the expiration of Fox’s rights to the five non-ANH films in order to maximize their profits.

You keep saying this even though you know it’s not true.

What if I’m right ten years down the road, and we’re stuck with substandard non anamorphic dvds that are 35 years out of date?

We should have gotten the originals as they deserve to be presented back in 2004, but no, Lucas had to act sadistically and add more bullshit changes with every video release, making the films nothing more than counterfeit direct-to-video knockoffs. We have been mistreated for 20 years for no reason at all.

We already have better options available right now. In 10 years, even without an official release, we will have even better options.

You aren’t even right now so you can’t be right ten years from now.

Like what? A bootleg is a bootleg.

We deserve better than this. No other film company in the world has refused for DECADES to release the films in their original, true versions.

njvc’s Blu Ray set of Despecialized is likely to be better than any official release would be. Even if they don’t screw up the quality of the movies themselves, there’s no way they would match the extras. And even though a properly done official release would be better quality than Despecialized, it doesn’t mean Despecialized isn’t very good quality and worth your time. Go get it and stop whining.

You may be right, but we still deserve better from Lucasfilm.

The most important film trilogy of all time deserves better.

No one tell Dek unless he’s cleaned up after the cat first.

(Not you, CatBus. A different cat.)

In my experience, once you start cleaning up after the cat, you’re cleaning up after the cat for life.

I would love for there to be an official release, not only so I could enjoy it myself, but also because it would introduce so many newcomers to the original theatrical versions.

With that being said, I’m not as bummed out over the lack of such a release as I would be had I not discovered this site. I mean, there are some amazing projects being done here like Despecialized, which is continuing to improve with each version and actually takes feedback into consideration. On the other hand, the various official releases of the special editions retained many technical issues even when they had 7 years between them (like the lightsabers losing their white cores). So I guess my point is that even though the situation isn’t ideal, it’s still not so bad. It might even be…pretty good.
