What did you think of the film when you first saw it?
I was disappointed in the movie but nevertheless tried to convince myself it was still a good, solid film.
In some ways, I miss having that kind of naivete.

Double post.

My eldest brother had similar thoughts when he saw ROTS in theaters, only he was more confused.
He was a huge SW geek who proudly proclaimed the genius of George Lucas, and was about 16-ish years-old (just saying this for context). After he saw the film, he tried to retain his loyalty to SW, but he felt like something was missing. He returned to see the film a total of six times. Each time he continually felt like it wasn’t all there, and he didn’t know what was wrong. I believe this was just before the time he realized how terrible the PT is.

Wow. People actually liked this film when it was first release. It’s crazy comparing these reviews to the ones we see on this site nowadays. What did you think of the film when you first saw it?
As soon as we were out of the theater I started laughing and yelling “NOOOOOOOO!!” and shaking my fists in the air. My buddies were all laughing too. I was disappointed, but after the first two…
“What did you expect… asshole.”
So it was easier to take and just laugh off.
It’s funny how a lot of people at the time couldn’t accept that the prequels were objetively bad, yet with stuff like Wild, Wild West and the Tristar Godzilla they were like “wow, this is terrible” immediatly. With the special editions I was in denial for quite a while, with the “Wow, Star Wars with enhanced effects!” mindset. Granted many of these were telltale signs of how the prequels were going to be.

At the time?
Have you seen the Rankings thread lately?
It’s like when one roots for the home team, even when the home team is in a years long slump.
Where were you in '77?
^ Vikings fans?

That’s because the latter two are reboots/spinoffs which take place in their own continuities separate from their source material and involve none of the original creators of said source material. The PT, on the other hand, is a whole 'nother animal.
^ Good point, Duracell. As a Godzilla fan, I could quickly dismiss GINO '98, but I had a harder time with Phantom Menace and that’s why.
