Problem is, we've been teased with the possibility of seeing this footage since the days of Laserdisc. (Definitive Collection, not!) And when we finally got to see some on DVD, then find out there's more, one gets the sense they're holding back, and trickling this stuff out ever since. I don't know of any other franchise that keeps dangling that tasty carrot in front of fans, then yanks it back once we get a bite.

This stuff should have been on the Blu Ray set. Nobody would have minded if it mandated an extra disc to hold it all. Not everybody owns a Apple device, believe it or not.

I watched the footage from all three ebooks last night and this is exactly what I felt, right down to thinking about the Definitive Collection Laserdisc.  That Laserdisc set was $250 retail I believe and included that crummy Lucas Creative Impulse book.  The extras on that disc, as compared to what they really had in the archives, was appalling.

Alot of the ebook footage of ESB and ROTJ look like they came from a non-effects workprint.  Those workprints are filled with so much alternate footage, dialog and animatics we've never seen that its a crime that they have put out so many releases of the original trilogy and shown us practically none of it.  I think the only workprint footage we've been shown pre Blu Ray release was on the Making Magic CD-rom from the 90s.

I think Rinzler stating he "found" alot of this stuff is incorrect or misleading.  For instance theres a behind the scenes video of the emperor getting thrown by Vader that was shown in Empire of Dreams, we just see the longer version in the ebook.  Also they had found the workprint footage by at least the late 90s thanks to all those Star Wars Insider deleted scene articles and the article about the first cut of ANH.

So as a longtime fan, its hard not to feel burned but at least most of it is out there now.  We still don't have Luke on dagobah cutting the bars and a few other things (Yak Face arguing on the sail barge with 3PO translating).  I just wish we could have it all in one set and not all over the place in 5 different products we have to buy.

As far as I understood his working procedure on these books, I'd say it's quite accurate. If I remember correctly he was given free rein in the archives, and in his SW blog updates he wrote about how he accidentally found stuff by just going through the drawers and files. I wouldn't be suprised if some of the reels just turned up that way.

Yeah it's obnoxious that this stuff is not on the bluray. (And they would have found it in time if they had put forth any actual effort into that feeble 90 dollar dud.)

I do take issue with the knee jerk portion of the fanbase, which manages to turn any and all conversation into Lucas bashing. I find that unproductive and profoundly ignorant.

I'm personally interested in the examination of the material itself; in the fanedit community and the historians, who actually contribute something to the conversation. That adds value, rather than noise and cynicism (that was why I embarked on Kitbashed in the first place).

It's very interesting to me to evaluate this new material and how it changes our perception of how the movies were made, or who the people working on them were at the time. It's completely uninteresting to me to have another swing at the Lucas/Kurtz piñata, and oh isn't it strange how the movies became worse after Empire etc.

It is interesting to me why the quality of the storytelling and the tone of the movies changed; and those reasons are rarely as simple "Lucas is stupid/greedy/megalomaniacal/etc! Oh, how everything was better with Kurtz around."

I see it as film history, and I don't see the worth it hammering on the same nail over and over. Especially without a few beers around.

Well said, and I see where you're coming from, and I agree with you for the most part. It's just that not everyone has that intention when bringing up stuff like this. Most of it speaks for itself anyway. The Kurtz/Lucas fallout I brought up a few pages back comes from a genuine interest on my part to understand how things actually turned out. From Kazanjian's words you get the impression Kurtz was going to be replaced no matter if he let ESB go over budget or not. Other info even seems to suggest he was lightly involved on the pre-production of ROTJ. I just find this interesting, that's all. And I personally think it's worth discussing as he was a big part of the "Star Wars family" for many years.

At the same time, there's no mystery why there's a huge dissatisfaction and bitterness directed towards Lucas among a large group of the fanbase today. Things haven't exactly been sugarsweet for the fans of the classic trilogy for the last 20 years. I'm not saying that there's need for beating that old dead horse over and over again because of it, but the reality is that it might unfortunately be here to stay because of Lucas himself.

The making of books and the deleted scenes etc, are truly great stuff but at the same time it makes the absence of the actual films treated with the same respect even more silly.

The original films should also have been on the Blu Ray set but this is Star Wars, what can you expect. I'm pretty sure most of this stuff was "found" around the time they prepared the 2004 DVD set (some of this in shorter form appeared on that bonus disc.) There's definitely more stuff from where that's coming from. They know exactly what they're doing and it works perfectly. It's a franchise with such a loyal fanbase, where the creator can basically spit his fans in the face for almost 20 years and they still buy his products. The carrots on future sets may be Casting Auditions, From SW to Jedi, The lost Making of ESB (some of it appear in this material), the 1980 John Williams doc (some of it appear in this material) and on and on, that well will not be dried up anytime soon.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

I can't really believe this stuff is just lying around haphazardly in drawers after all this time. I mean if they published the lost cut article in SW insider in 1998-9 describing all the alternate elements in the lost cut and publishing stills back then they must have been able to present viewable media in black and white from the lost cut from that point. I can't believe they would go the trouble of researching/detailing footage of interest, and then close the archive door back up. I mean an archive is supposed to be indexed in some form and some stage surely? Or are the surviving dailies and stuff just sitting around in unmarked cans with the words 'film' on them?

I have a hard time believing this stuff wasn't looked at when Empire Of Dreams was being worked on several years back.

It's possible the archive could be really messy though. That one mini doc on the special editions showed the difficulties in locating the raw footage of the Stormtroopers by the escape pod shot.

I think the plan was to discover new things for release for the duration of George's life (if you catch my drift).

Clearly Lucas had his eye on the next home cinema format when the blu-ray was put together.

Why buy it if it has the same stuff on it as the DVD?

You have to have a gimmick.

The PT blu-rays didn't even have the deleted scenes that the DVDs have.

Each iteration has to have some Pokemon style attribute so that we mugs will be compelled to gather them all in some great trophy room dedicated to our own stupidity.

Let's face it. Star Wars is the ultimate marketer's dream. There's such a fan base that anything can be released and there's a guarantee that someone will buy it.

And of course they know it.

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

I don't have (or want) a stupid Kindle and it's seriously PISSING ME OFF that I spent nearly $200 for the three hardcover books and now Random House is going around taking the videos off YouTube. The least they could do is offer people who bought the books a place to download the videos, or a mail-in DVD offer (I'd be willing to PAY for that, even!) I'd even friggin' cut the UPC codes out of the book covers and mail them in to prove I bought them!

Loyal Star Wars fan for 32 years, no OOT on Blu-Ray, and I am so fed up with this bullshit PIECEMEAL handling of footage that should have at least been released on DVD in 2005, it makes me doubly glad that I never bought the blu-ray set.

ARRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHH! I am SO DONE with this crap and being made to feel like a chump, I think I've finally reached my breaking point. :-(

Thanks for sharing all the info on these releases... It's been a really interesting read...

I might get this digital copy as I have never owned any book by Rinzler apart from the sounds of Star Wars Book

The Kindle is a pretty neat device, but yeah, I agree completely with your post.

I hope somebody at LFL took note that with little fanfare the reel was quickly around 3 and a half million hits when they pulled it. There's still a lot of good will and appetite for 77-83 stuff, they don't even have to put the big disney marketing push behind it, it still almost sells itself.

After seeing Mind Of Evil recently where the hand restored colour of episode one is the best of the set I wonder if the Hanger footage could be brought back into colour using the theatrical footage as a guide.

That realization on Lando's face he might be saying goodbye for the last time was good. Pity they cut that.

And gratuitous Wookiee hugs are a plus in my book. ;)

Nothing against the Kindle (or any other similar device), I just don't have a need for one now, and I don't want to feel like I have to buy one, especially since people are having trouble getting them to play the video content anyway.

Those who know me around here know that I'm not one to rant; I'm a very patient person in life and my temper has a long fuse....but there is a limit to my patience and sometimes I feel that SW fans have been treated disrespectfully (abusively, even?!) compared to loyal fans of other franchises.

Thanks, for the clips. :-)

I think they should have left the shot of Luke dangling from the grate of the Rancor pit in the film. Wasn't that shown recently at ComicCon, or someplace (someone shot it off a screen with a camera phone). I thought it was in color, but I'm probably remembering it wrong.

It was shown at the latest Celebration Europe, and it was in black and white.

Maybe it's because I've been on board since the beginning and that's how she was introduced to me as a character as well as an actress, but I cannot reconcile who she was back then with who she is now.  It's a transformation I simply cannot wrap my head around.

Carrie was in my bedroom when I was a kid???

I never knew... I never ever knew... nobody told me.
