4 / 2 = 2

Take it to the out of context thread.

Or the irrelevant thread, if you prefer.

How is that irrelevant? Two is exactly, irrefutably half of four.

Half =/= halfway

Halfway between 1 and 4 is (1+4)/2 = 5/2

You guys are thinking about using a specific increment for each level of response to the film. We are thinking in numbers and percentages. It’s just different ways of looking at it.

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

As someone who deals with math and percentages every day, I think looking at “two stars out of four” and seeing “50%” makes no sense.

It’s a movie rating, not a math problem.

Literally what yhwx said. 2/4=1/2. This is one half, otherwise known as 50%.

I do understand your logic now though. When the lowest increment is 1, the exact center would not actually be two.

But my logic lies in the idea that the stars are like a loading bar as a visual representation. When the bar is half full (two stars) that’s 50%.

Yes, I know. I’m saying that the actual math (i.e. fractions) is irrelevant when applied to a movie rating.

Yes. That’s why if you include zero, then the halfway point would be two.

I thought Tobar’s post, which you quoted, explained it quite clearly.

Ok fine. Clearly we see this differently (as you already pointed out).

I don’t really disagree with your point now that I realized my mental error in understanding. I still like the system and I’ll probably end up using zero out of four some time anyway. If I really hate it enough.

Something like Toy Story 2. 😉

The eight ball rating system would have saved us all the effort!

Eight is also an even number with no middle ground! Besides, just use half stars in the Ebert system and you now have eight! Though I do love me some balls!

Bruce is correct. 2/4 is exactly half score.

It is 50% but it isn’t a median score. They’re talking about halfway in a sense that there are an even number of scores below it and above it. If you only do 1-4 then there is only one possible score below 2 and two above it.

I acknowledged that I understand this concept earlier in the thread if you bothered to read it.

I think the real question is why any of you are bothering to have this conversation.
