Living Daylights is pretty great. Dalton’s movies were ahead of their time.
A View to a Kill (1985) 6/10
A movie that relies a bit to much on the audiences nostalgia for the past entries in the series. Sill it was fun to watch and make fun of.
I liked the revelation that 007 is an excellent chef. The movies usually don’t have time to show us a different side of Bond, and it was a nice touch.
Where were you in '77?
Moonraker showed us the side of Bond that was impressively resilient in the realm of space travel.

Great score! The pre-title sequence is one of the most exciting of the series up to this point. Excellent stunt work! Roger still looks good and is as relaxed in the role of 007 as he was in “The Spy Who Loved Me”. The locations are stunning and the extras as beautiful as ever. The story had a nice flow from location to location even if it is goofy. The actress playing the role of Goodhead was flat and the character generic and uninteresting. Bond and Goodhead have zero sexual chemistry. It’s just a female Felix Leiter and Bond beds her down just because it’s a woman. The Gondola was way over the top and is the kind of humor that soured the series in my opinion. Some people feel that the over the top stuff was what made Moore’s Bond great. Jaws returning was a huge mistake as well. The cable car fight is another over the top goofy set-up. Jaws crashing into the station and meeting the girl with braces is more suited for a spoof of spy films. I feel the same way about everything after the boat chase. Loved the return of John Barry’s “007” theme. Not the worst film in the series, yet far from the “From Russia With Love” or “On He Majesty Secret Service” style of 007 film that I crave.

Derek Meddings and crew outdid themselves. Considering the real space shuttle had not flown yet in 1979, the launch sequences are still impressive. (Like Thunderbirds on steroids.) I didn’t mind Jaws returning, but making him suddenly become a “good” guy is a bit of a stretch. His lady love unfortunately looks like the Swiss Miss Instant Cocoa gal. Drax was a great villain though. (I think Austin Powers cribbed from this as much as the Connery films.) I’m surprised nobody has done a fanedit to dial back the goofiness.
I have to chuckle that the U.S. would have a platoon of space marines handy they could quickly launch, (what were they training for, alien invasion?) and a real shuttle launch from Vandenberg gets you into a polar orbit, which probably isn’t in the neighborhood of Drax’s space station.
And if Drax wasn’t evil enough, he somehow captured the Jupiter 2 from Lost in Space! (Lower right corner.)

That’s a fun one. My favorite Bond of the 80s is the Living Daylights though.
TLD is just about my favorite Bond film (I’ve not seen all of 'em) and I was happy to find other fans of it here years ago. Seems like most folks don’t like it.
I don’t get why people wouldn’t like TLD. It’s exciting and violent while still being lighthearted enough to enjoy as a standalone, escapist action film. It’s basically the last of the Cold War Bond films too, which is neat.

And Dalton is great!
Dalton never did seem to get a fair shake from U.S audiences. (LTK might have been too dark for 1989, but the Craig films have walked in it’s footsteps.) I still kind of want to see him play an older Bond lured out of retirement for one last mission.

Any Bond fan who does not have TLD in or at least hovering around their top 10 is not a true Bond fan.

As a true Bond fan, I love all of the films equally except for the ones with Daniel Craig 😉
EDIT: That was a joke by the way. Normally I wouldn’t bother clarifying but so many people like to hate on Daniel Craig for usually no reason that I wanted to make sure I wasn’t confused for one of those.

Thanks for the (unfortunately necessary) clarification.

You’ve mentioned before that you’ve only seen one of them decades ago.

I’ve seen a few, and portions of many others. Enough to know I don’t care for them.

The Austin Powers movies kind of ruined it for you? 😉

Not at all, they have done that to themselves.

This is a classic for me 😃 Quite fun and creative of a film.

Then why did you only give it 4 stars?

Maybe he’s using the Ebert scale.
No, he used stars, not Eberts.

All these ratings without the top rating reference really bother me.

Right? For all we know he just gave it a 4 out of 100.

Some interesting ideas regarding DNA time travel, capable cast and that’s about it.
