I just watched the '78 Body Snatchers as well. It was good, but I think I prefer the original. I thought the remake had some pacing issues.

The Blob (1958) – 4/4

I’ve loved this film since I was a kid. It holds such a weird and goofy premise, but it takes itself completely seriously, with wondrous effect. It draws me in and brings me to believe that such a ridiculous thing is really happening, and I feel for the characters, who carry the film grandly.

The only thing I don’t like about the film is the music over the opening credit sequence. I actually like the song itself, but it takes away from the tone of the film, and makes it feel like I’m about to watch a piece of schlock that’s supposed to be a cheese-fest. The originally scored piece is much more fitting, but sadly they replaced it. Reinserting the original opening music is being added to an ever-growing mental list of eventual fanedits I want to get around to making.

SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.

DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

^^I was actually thinking about watching that soon, since I’d only heard of it recently. I assume from the brief words about it that it is recommended, correct?

I spent a few days going through the ROCKY series.

ROCKY = 9/10
Still the champ of the series. Original, raw and moving.

ROCKY II = 7/10
Still has the basic vibe of the first film, but the originality and raw interesting low-budget style is gone.

ROCKY III = 5/10
Hair gel and body oil have taken over!

ROCKY IV = 4/10
Silly premise, bad script, missed opportunities, stupid robots, cheesy songs, No classic Bill Conti score, Rocky and friends are reduced to comic book characters. Worst of the series!

ROCKY V = 5/10
Rocky comes back to earth and falls on hard times. This film is a very mixed bag.
The premise is a bit more solid then the previous two entries and there are very touching moments. It’s just too bad there are too few of them. The casting is an issue for me. All the non-regular cast are just bad actors and the direction is very lazy. Rocky’s son is not that bad, but his lines totally suck! Just a by the numbers, get it out in theaters fast production that does not build enough empathy to make us care about the final fight. Another missed opportunity to have made a great film.

ROCKY BALBOA = 6/10
Another mixed bag. If you take half of this film and half of Rocky V, you get what should have been the best Rocky since the original. The classic Bill Conti music score works so well to invoke the emotions of the early films, I just wish the script did the same. There is a great monologue ROCKY gives to his son and that may be one of my most favorite moments in all the ROCKY squeals.

CREED = 4/10
I only liked the parts with Rocky. Nothing special.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) – 4/4

It’s really pretty great. Thrilling, mysterious, carried by likable and compelling characters played by great actors, and I’ll just say that the twist at the end is wonderfully crafted.

(I’ve decided to adopt Ebert’s 4 star scale, because I’ve always taken a liking to it, and I started to realize how dumb it is to use letter grades.)

Yeah, letters are so much dumber than stars.

Yeah, letters are so much dumber than stars.

The letter grading system is based on a percentage system that doesn’t make sense when used outside of school grade context. I decided to start using Ebert’s scale because it’s a simple numerical scale that gets the point across while all the more specific feelings on the film can be summed up in a short review.

That makes even less sense. A four star system is just a percentage system with less detail.

This is true, in a way. Yes, the 4-star scale is just a strict set of percentages, the same way a 10-star scale is, only with less variation. But you’re looking at it the wrong way in comparison to the letter grade system.

The letter grades, when used outside a school grading context, are convoluted.

In the 4-star, 1/4=25%, 2/4=50%, 3/4=75%, and 4/4=100%. This is proper, even scaling.

In the letter grades, A=90–100%, B=80–89%, C=70–79%, D=60–69%, and F=0–59%. This makes C the midpoint, or average; but that means that average is 70–79%, and that’s just stupid. 50–59% is the midsection where average is. It’s middle ground; nothing special, but not bad. 70–79% is good, not average.

I thought about that too, actually, but it doesn’t really work that way when looking at what the letters mean (see above).

Patriot Games (1992) – 3/4

It was fun and thrilling, and Harrison Ford was good as a replacement for Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan.

Clear and Present Danger (1994) – 3/4

Again, fun and thrilling, Harrison Ford was good again, and I loved Willem Dafoe in it as well.

I personally can’t stand the four star scale. Five stars makes so much more sense to me.

1 - Hated it
2 - Didn’t like it
3 - Liked it
4 - Really liked it
5 - Loved it

With the four star scale there’s no real middle ground.

See I disagree, which is why I adopted the letter grades. 70-79 will always be middle ground to me.

Which I why when I did the 10 scale I used to regularly be ragged on for rating things too highly. But something like a 5/10 is to me never something that’d I’d want to watch, it’s plain bad (though not as bad as 1-4 - see the problem with this scale being there’s too much specificity for the bad stuff when it should all just be F). Anyway that’s just me.

I love stats so also enjoy looking at grades, stars, percentage scores ect but they still are no substitute for a legitimate review (I also never know whether people are trying to be 100% objective as possible or just rating on “how much they enjoyed the film”). I don’t rate films personally myself (too much of a perfectionist) but found this article hilarious when doing some research on the whole thing:

Out of ten is my preferred fashion. No .5 scores though, it’s too complicated then.

1 is unwatchable, 5 is okay, 7 is good, and 10 is perfect (or near perfect).

Not enough people read the EU.

Watch the second remake, directed by Abel Ferrara (well, directed by Bojan Bazelli as a matter of fact…), it’s by far the best of the series. The fourth one is quite lame.
