I laughed. Thank you.

TOS on Blu-ray is fantastic and looks better than the OT...and it includes both the original effects and CGI effects via seamless branching. And a choice of original mono audio or 7.1 DTS-HD MA.

Kind of sad in a way, unless you're a huge Trek nerd.

And it looks like we're going to get TNG on Blu-ray as well :) I'll give $1000 to CBS for all 7 seasons by the time it's done, but I won't give $40 to George for the OT.

Paramount knows better than to piss off the fans. ;)

TNG is going to be a pain in the ass to rebuild all those episodes from scratch for HD though.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Actually, Paramount did a shit job with the Star Trek films on Blu-ray, using old masters that were DNR'd to hell and back. Thankfully, the TNG Blu-rays are being done by the same group that did TOS.

Latest word is that they're prepping 3 or 4 episodes for a teaser Blu-ray this December to gauge interest. Since TNG was produced using fairly modern production methods, all the original film elements (and edit points) should be meticulously cataloged. Shouldn't be any more difficult than doing TOS. I think the only question at this point is how the old effects will be handled. They were rendered in NTSC I believe, so if they don't have the original files, the best we can hope for in terms of the original effects is an upscale (ala Firefly). I'm sure they'll do an excellent job regardless.

Aren't the movies and tv shows handled by different arms of the same corporate octopus though?

With a few exceptions, they shot real models for TNG. (A couple ILM stock shots of the Enterprise D were actually reused in Generations.) So if the film is in the vault they wouldn't have to CGI everything.

I had heard the upscaled DS9 Tribble episode on the TOS set didn't look very good.

Yeah, the DS9 episode was upscaled. TNG is being remastered from the original film elements like TOS though.

The problem lies in the effects shots. While they did use models for the ships, the composite shots with all the effects in place were done at standard def. They'd have to recomposite all the original film and re-render the CGI bits to recreate them in HD. I could see that being fairly time-consuming.

I don't mind, if they use CGI instead of Models. They used CGI for almost all Voyager episodes and definitely all Enterprise episodes. Looked okay for me. Better than the Prequels actually. I hope they'll do DS9 too, since it's my favorite Star Trek show.

What ???

TNG on BluRay ???

Where can I find some information about it ?

BTW I hope they use the old special effects, the models look much more real then the crappy CGI from Voyager. (The funny thing is that the DS9 CG effects lokk MUCH better).

Are you sure the DS9 tribble episode was upscaled ? Well the special effects scenes definitely were (and they look terrible), but I'm not sure about the live-action footage

According to what I've read at the HTF, it was. With the sheer number of "Forrest Gump" shots they did to put Sisko and the gang into the original TOS footage, it would have cost a lost to recreate them in HD.

I still don't know how Paramount is ever going to be able to release the TMP "Director's Edition" in HD. The CGI house that did the new shots was shuttered several years ago. Very short sighted of Paramount not to pony up the cash for HD renders at the time.

If all of the original effects shots exist, and are well catagorized, it should be fairly easy to scan everything in a computer and recomposite everything. To be quite honest, TNG wasn't an FX showcase. A lot of the establishing shots of the Enterprise flying by are practically the same in every episode. You've got the warp drive stars wizzing by in the windows (should be easier than snot to recreate and recomposite). Same for the main bridge screen. Phaser blasts are easy to recreate, and hell, most people can make them on their home computer. The transporter effect would more than likely have to be recreated and will take a bit more time.

Of course, there are more complicated effects shots for,the Q episodes, and the hologram episodes, and I suppose any space battle episodes.

In the end, it shouldn't be too difficult. It will just take a lot of time.

It would be nice to be a Star Trek fan. Or Lord of the Rings for that matter.

At least the outlook for Indy fans looks good...

Well the TOS boxset(s) is(are) great. Every episode is represented in 2 versions, with the original effects and with the new CG effects, and there is a brand new 7.1 mix created from original elements AND the original mono mix. That would be great for Star Wars too
