Idea: Holiday Special on Blu-ray? — Page 2

I for one would like to see the HS transfered in Holographic DVD.
For those who don't know what that is, it's a disc in experimental phase that can hold 1.4 terabytes.
If my math is correct, this disc has the apropriate capacity to hold the HS in uncompressed high def (if anyone finds a film and scans it)

To those who will rush to tell me that it was never on film but is was just aired, so all we have is TV grabs:
Every moving picture before digital camera technology had to be filmed somewhere.

So my guess is:
We have to find that film, scan it, sponsor the holographic DVD experiments, and when the technology is ready, store the HS in that format.
And all that to preserve this masterpiece called the Holiday special, which I never managed to watch for over 5 minutes.
And now, for your feature presentation:
The Classic Re-re-re-release of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back.
In this version the word "WOOKIE" has been changed to "HAIR CHALLENGED ANIMAL" and the entire cast has been digitally replaced by Ewoks.

Not wanting to turn this into a defense of the Holiday Special, but it does deserve to be preserved, even if it is bad. No, it isn't good, but it is interesting, at least I think, and is worth a viewing, even if you fast forward through most of it.

That makes no sense whatsoever. It's very obviously shot on video.

I had something else to add:
to movie_rebel_82, who brought this thread up after 6 months:

Things are not as simple as garbage in = garbage out.

An old analog tape may have poor quality, but if this is all we have we try to preserve it the best we can.
Digitalizing it and compressing it to fit a DVD with a lossive algorithm such as mpeg2 further adds artifacts and reduces even more the quality.
The fact that a source has poor quality does not mean that a transfer that can perform better picture qualities given better sources will fully preserve the quality of a poor source.
so in conclusion, your equation should be:

garbage in --- lossive algorithm---> garbage with more artifacts out

you're right, my bad. But I wanted so badly to support the uncompressed high def idea... pity...

I can't say that uncompressed HD video wouldn't be cool as hell.

Even if it was captured uncompressed, uncompressed != hidef. Uncompressed is just that, uncompressed. So you'd end up with a multi-gigabyte file that you can store on a blu-ray or HD-DVD disc, but it wouldn't be playable except in raw form. The only way to get it into hidef format would be to upsample it. But even with that, you're not going to get something better than what you started with without a LOT of work (if it's even possible).

I am unconcerned with any of these quaint ideas.

Currently, I am actually working on a full VHS-to-IMAX film transfer of the Holiday Special, which myself and a handful of minions and toadies will then view daily in my personal Home IMAX Theater.

I don't care what any of you might say about HD or any other format... *NOTHING* compares to seeing a 50-foot-high Bea Arthur sing the Cantina Band song.

"If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every bootlegged copy of that program and smash it."

If George Lucas hates The Holiday Special with a passion so much....then it MUST be good!

For the few of us (lucky enough ) to have never seen it...I recommend reading Chefelf's review of it HERE

ROTFLMAO! You guys are certainly bigger SW fans than I.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.
