How many good third movies in a trilogy can you name? — Page 2

I mean, yeah, the dog makes more sense. But to me that’s literally the only thing about the theatrical cut that’s better.

Come to think of it, I might tweak it myself to replace the ox with the dog and leave the rest of the assembly cut alone…

Return of the Jedi

Must … resist … urge to … snark.

There was a point in my early 20s when I would take a dump on ROTJ, but the more Star Wars saturates the market, the more I appreciate Jedi. It certainly was a step down in quality from Empire, but there’s a lot about the film I really love. Star Wars is like ice cream, some folks like chocolate, some people like vanilla, some people are just happy to get ice cream…then there’s the crazy people who would eat crap on a cone and swear it’s awesome…

Personally, I can cut subpar fanfic churned out by committee more slack than a bad ending written by the original author; I expect better quality from him than them.

I do not expect better quality from him given that, in addition to a few amazing films, he also wrote and/or directed some real stinkers.

The author in question is an analogical composite of everyone involved in the production of the OT, not Lucas alone.

Do it already and prove Ray simultaneously wrong and right.

I liked this one in my teens ('90’s), but can’t stand it now, while ED & EDII are among my all time favorite films.
To each their own! It’s the most popular of the trilogy, so I know I’m in the minority.
Speaking of being in the minority…

Alien3 (theatrical cut)
Day of the Dead

I think as the years go by I prefer to watch Evil Dead II more than the other 2 films, but I owe a lot to Army of Darkness. I had only watched AOD as a kid, and I remember seeing Evil Dead for sale at the store, and I thought I was getting AOD, and I ended up falling in love with the movie. Then I found Evil Dead II at a blockbuster, and had to watch it. I remember falling even more in love with it, because it was like a rehash of the first film, but more over the top, and had more of the comedic moments one found in AOD.

What I think is best about AOD is Bruce Campbell. I think Evil Dead II showed him testing the waters of his comedic acting, where by AOD he had become a pro at it. It’s over the top and I don’t think I’d like the film as well with anybody else in the role.

I guess I probably saw AOD too much in my youth and I might not enjoy it as much as I used to, but it’s forever sewed into the fabric of my mind.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Looking at these film’s, why does mostly every director always make the third film of a trilogy the lowest point in the series?

Glass

Now that I’ve rewatched the film and after reading what Kevin Williamson’s original treatment would’ve been had he been the writer for it…

This!
I only watched the Assembly Cut once and the Ox is the only major change I remember. Maybe it’s full of movie-strengthening differences.

Oh, there’s a lot that’s different, to the tune of about 20-25 extra minutes. Sadly, movie-censorship’s comparison is old and crappily translated from German, and missing a lot of screen caps. And it’s been so long since I’ve seen the theatrical cut that I can’t remember the differences that clearly beyond the ox thing and Golic’s obsession with the alien.

Alien 3 is one that I love, maybe more than Aliens. Back to the Future 3 is pretty good too.

You’re thinking of The Bourne Ultimatum.

First off, here are two good movies that have yet to be mentioned…

Before Midnight (2013)
Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003)

Now that I’ve contributed positive content to this thread… what the frak is wrong with you people? Matrix Revolutions? Dark Knight Rises? Motherflipping Godfather Part III? Beyond Thunderdome? MOTHER OF TEARS? These are all terrible films that almost ruined good trilogies. Shame on all of you.

These film’s were listed in bold because they were the lowest point (the worst) in the trilogies, not the best, and also to help start the thread off.

The Naked Gun 3 (I know that’s not the full title but I’m too lazy to change format), Return of the Jedi (warts and all), The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, In The Mouth of Madness (thematic trilogies, so we’re cheating here), Samurai III: Duel at Ganryu Island; and that’s all as far trilogies go. In longer franchises, there are much more.

I’d say Day of the Dead too, but there are other 3 films after it, perhaps we can regard those as a separate trilogy?

While these all are fine films, IMO these are also the worst ones of the three. Yes, including the last one. 😛
