Help: looking for... The Reflecting Skin HD (anyone in Canada?)

This is a very strange, cult film that has yet to be on most people’s radars despite starring a pre-fame Viggo Mortensen. A young boy living in an Idaho prairie in the 1950s believes the English widow (Lindsay Duncan) living nearby is a vampire with intentions on his older brother (Mortensen). However, the truth is much more real, and much more horrifying. It’s a surreal film that once seen is never forgotten, particularly the opening scene involving an exploding frog…

It’s my favourite film, and I’d been working on my own private restoration of this when I find out it’s airing on motherfucking HD on Canadian TV! Are there any Canadian boarders who can cap this? Pleeeeease?

HOLY CRAP! I have been wanting a good copy of this for a decade now! What were you working on a restoration with?

Wow... I don't know why I didn't think about requesting this myself earlier! I am a huge fan of this film as well, but of course all I have is a VHS copy over on the rack there. I keep waiting for a DVD release to no avail. Wasn't aware of the international versions, but it sounds like they all have their issues (not being in English, in particular, except for the Japanese version which apparently is a botched transfer).

I second the request and plea for someone in Canada to cap this. Would love to see a HD2DVD conversion akin to Rad! and the pre-official release Twilight Zone: The Movie.

"You been exploding frogs again...?"

I don't know if I'd call the Japanese transfer "botched" necessarily - I was happy enough with it until I saw the Spanish version. One of the reasons I'm asking is that I'm consulting with the writer-director Philip Ridley and a company here in England who are planning a R2 UK release, and it would be great to have an HD version for reference.

No word from anyone? Please?

This is an amazing film for those who haven't seen it, a must for fans of surreal scary stuff a la David Lynch.

I take it nobody managed to record this. Shame. I'd love to see a preservation happen on this film.

I posted this on a few boards, and unfortunately it looks like no-one was interested.

That sucks. So, does this mean that your restoration is still going? It's a shame that people haven't seen this movie

Yes, I do hope you plan to continue on with your restoration project since apparently we aren't going to have the HD version (yet). I for one would be very interested in checking out the results when it's complete. I'd love to watch the film again since it's been a while, but I don't feel much like watching my VHS copy.

BTW, I did find a couple of trailers for it online, if you're looking for extras to stick on there.

I think I have the trailers you're talking about - the theatrical trailer (which I posted on YouTube, having ripped it off the Japanese DVD) and the American TV Spot that's on Video Detective.

I'm sorry guys, but I'm a bit reluctant to share my preservation (not that I could anyway at the moment due to computer problems). I made it primarily as a birthday present to the writer-director Philip Ridley, who's a friend of mine, and I don't feel right sharing something like that without his permission. The other reason is that as I said earlier, a company here in the UK are working their arses off to try and get out a special edition DVD (of this as well as Ridley's other film, The Passion Of Darkly Noon) out by the end of the year, and I don't want to step on their toes.

Well that's good to hear. I'll gladly pay for a nice special edition dvd, I just didn't want to import a so-so R2 dvd, or buy a worn out vhs copy.

Will this UK company make a Region 1 version available as well, or just Region 2?

I'll certainly be the first to run out and buy it when it hits the shelves.
