I’m not trying to rail against this film, I just think recasting the character in a window of 10 years before we see the character again sets a weird precedent. Are we all ok with a future film in which someone else plays Luke in between the OT and the ST?

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1992)
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

Not a fan.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) < Fan!
Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1992) < Not a fan.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) < DEFINITELY NOT A FAN!!

Never seen Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. Saw some trailers for it, though; looks like world-shrinking pablum.

I don’t want to see desert planets any more.

Considering how much Star Wars owes to westerns, and how much Han Solo in particular fits that world, it makes sense.

I actually don’t mind so long as it’s not Tatooine again for a very long time, and even then I’d want a damn good reason to go back. It was pointless enough having Luke go back there in RotJ other than Lucas checking off “the hero returns home” from his Joseph Campbell cheat sheet.

If it was Tatooine then people would complain that it’s reusing a familar location for nostalgia value, and if it was another desert planet people would complain that it’s just a Tatooine clone like Jakku. I believe in the internet’s ability to make this a problem.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I wonder if we will see the Irving boys, Ducain, or Kanjiklub.

It is theorized that desert planets might be rather common https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_planet
So it makes sense to have lots of them.

Get your astronomy outta here, this is a space wizard series.

Take your pick then;
Sci-Fi explanation or plot explanation.

As mentioned earlier, SW is very influenced by Westerns, and Han is very much the gunslinger of the OT, so a desert world works well that way. And, it makes sense to “return” to Tatooine considering Han’s past with Jabba.

Plus, how many environments are there left to pick from anyway? The speeder footage suggest a city or industrial area, so we might finally get to see Corellian.

Tatooine would make a lot of sense if Jabba is involved. I’d be fine with seeing it again in this context. I think there’s a difference between going there in a spinoff because it’s established that one of the characters lives there and going out of your way to invent contrived reasons to keep returning in every single film like it was in the PT.

Oh god, just please no CGI jabba. He looks awful every time.
Not optimistic about this movie in general.

If only there were a character that had family living on Tatooine in the PT.

The Jedi are all but extinct.......

I think that’s different. Anakin only came from Tatooine because George wanted to go there, it was never part of the character before TPM. Arbitrarily deciding Anakin is from Tatooine just so you can include it in the film =/= checking in on Jabba on the planet where we already know he is.

Did you see Tarkin in R1? They’ve come a long way. I bet they could make a very convincing Jabba now.

Aren’t there rumors that they’re working on a practical Jabba anyway? I’m expecting something like Unkar Plutt in TFA, with a practical body and CGI face.

CGI may keep improving, but I’m confident they would do better to use a practical effect, or a mix. Hopefully they’ve figured that out, based on the use of practical effects in TFA and R1.

Tarkin looked pretty good in R1, but IMO the ROTJ Jabba was more realistic. 😃

There was a rumor circulating last year that a practical Jabba puppet had been created for the film.

If only they could shot material to replace the CGI version in TPM and ANH-SE#2&3…

Yes, I did see Tarkin in R1. And it was the moment when I stopped caring about that movie and very nearly gave up on the new continuity. Bad storytelling decision, awful CGI, disrespectful as hell to Peter Cushing.
