I know opinions here vary wildly about JJ’s Trek films, but personally I thought they had the right idea as far as casting goes. None of the crew are actually doing impressions of the original characters (except Karl Urban), but most of them nail the vibe. That’s what I want from a Star Wars recasting, because even if whoever they got was absolutely dead on I’d never be fooled. They ought not try to disguise the fact that they have a new actor, because that’s never going to work.

But isn’t that different since that’s a reboot, not something that’s supposed to take place in an existing canon?

Star Trek 09 was also meant to fit into the existing Star Trek canon. Yeah it was a reboot, but it was done by means of time travel, so the characters are supposed to literally be the same people.

I don’t know about you guys, but I thought the casting on ST '09 was terrible. New-Kirk and New-Spork are okay, but I don’t think any other character was cast well. Regardless of looking like the original actors, none of them were even close to the original characters. Not to mention that I only find Kirk and Spock better because they vaguely resemble the original actors enough to be passable.

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

If physical resemblance is your concern then you would hate all of the Bond movies made post-1967 (excluding Diamonds Are Forever - 1971).

The actors playing James Bond are adaptations/portrayals of a character from a novel (though the films aren’t direct adaptations of the books). That said, I would say that Sean Connery is the best actor to portray Bond IMO, and I don’t really care for the others much.

? Karl Urban as Bones is by far the best cast of the lot.

Craig is also good. But honestly, everyone between them looks… meh at best nowadays.

I also think Scotty was passable. Spock was good but still looks so young (I guess smoking has something to do with that) and the material given to him wasn’t true to character. Everyone else I’m entirely neutral to, I don’t think any of them were particularly bad. If anything, the script is more to blame for those movies than the cast. Star Trek Continues remains truer to the Star Trek I know.

Anyway, isn’t there a Star Trek thread in Off Topic someplace?

Yeah, Bond was a poor example as he was a literary character originally. That’d be the same as comparing all of the Jack Ryans:

I think he’s saying like Ledger people bitched about his casting and then surprised everyone by absolutely killing the role.

The only problem is that not everyone devotes themselves to a role like Ledger did. Also not everyone had the quality of writing Ledger had in TDK. The universe doesn’t align itself in such a manner that often.

I hope this doesn’t lead to a fifteen-page debate about the Nolan Batman films. 😉

Yes, this.

All I’m saying is that speculation is worthless. We’ll see what we see when we see it.

I hope we see a very intense and selfish portrayal of Han Solo, like we saw in the majority of the original Star Wars film.

I wouldn’t mind a Temple of Doom Han Solo, out to seek fortune and glory.

I want to see a brainless Han Solo remote-controlled by a race of go-go dancers.

Are you sure you mean “At best”?

Of course… it’s a story so simple, a child could do it… a child could do it.

I was kinda hoping he’d be about ten years old running around with his dad saying things like “Dad, Taun We’s here!”
