Hal’s Rogue One edit (a half-assed version of DigMod’s) (Released) — Page 3

The secondary color corrector fx is kind of like a chroma key, but instead of removing an isolated color range you can change its hue and saturation. I used it extensively in my Coaxium Heist edit. I picked a screenshot that has greenish/blue darks, selected that color range then brought the saturation down to around 0.4 for that specific color range. The result is a slight adjustment of the greenish blue to more of a grey which looks more accurate (to my eyes) for things like steel and imperial uniforms. I was able to do a mass apply to the whole film as it has this issue generally. I found a color corrector low/mid/high wheel did too much to the overall color so I went this route. I should look into LUTs again. Im kind of picky and never really fully agreed with any LUT I’ve used in the past.

Okay, yeah, I don’t think I’d be able to recreate that in FCP7 or X! But that’s okay. If it’s possible to export a LUT for Rogue One I’d be okay with rendering it through with that. But I never noticed any issues myself with the way the movie looks.

This project is getting a little less half-assed, it seems, compelled by you all (in a good way).

Im very curious to see your edit, being more than just half-assed. Lol.

Hmmm, it’s an odd thing. I’m not sure how any of this works, but I noticed the colors looked diferent back when I tested merging the shots to a full scene, even though the clips would look fine on playback.
The odd colors are most apparent during the first scene:

Here’s a fix test I did altering some settings, this might look better, though it still alters the colors a bit:

That green is noticable when looking at those images

If you have any desire to make this edit less “half-assed”, there’s some interesting little trims in alterations in TM2YCs “When Rebels Dare” that could be ported over. I’d have to go over the cutlist again but it might be worth taking a look just to see if anything strikes your fancy. Overall, I think your feelings about Rogue One are much more positive than mine though, so I understand if you want to keep things minimal.

I believe I looked through that before but I honestly don’t remember. I really don’t mind Rogue One but it wouldn’t hurt to reevaluate it while I’m at it. But I expect I’ll probably leave it as is in the end.

I also very much like the original Rogue One and think its theatrically fine as was intended on release, but those deepfakes added to Hals V2 won me over from the original version, this can no longer be called a half-assed edit 😁

The less changes the better but still looking at TM2YC change list if there were to be any fixes to use:

  • Reordered opening act, which I felt was choppy in the original version. Now we do not return to older Jyn until it’s time for her to be rescued and time for her story to begin again. Death Star scene has also been brought forward to establish the threat, before we see how others are responding to that threat. I think these changes make things clearer.
-Hals removal of Cassian in the beginning to better follow Jyn is understandable but that scene is a missed

  • Altered blue-milk shot so the camera pans with Lyra’s movement across the kitchen, instead of zooming right in on the milk, which I found to be distracting.
    -subtle yet effective

  • Removed distracting fan-service cameo from Dr. Evazan and Ponda Baba.
    -Already fixed in V2

Removed a few seconds of Bodi dithering too long over the ‘Rogue One’ call sign.
-Already fixed in V2

If more aggresive changes preferred then best off with TM2YC Rogue One edit.

Alright! I will try to tweak it some more. Just wanted to show what I’ve been able to do so far.

To quote Baze Malbus - “You’re welcome”

If you’d consider a couple of pretty small changes I thought of after going through the subtitles again, don’t know if they’ve been discussed before:

  • One thing that’s always bothered me is when Krennic orders the Death Troopers to execute Galen’s team, he yells “Ready, aim, fire!” and then Galen steps in and says “Stop! It was me!”. Now, the Death Troopers don’t strike me as the type to hesitate following orders so truthfully Galen should’ve been shot down for stepping in. I wonder if the “fire!” could be trimmed so that Galen steps in before Krennic can finish the command.

  • There’s a piece of clunky out of place dialogue that seems to be adr’d in. When we first get to Jedah, and Jyn wakes up from her dream, Cassian walks in and does a bit of chat with her: “That’s Jedah… or what’s left of it…” then he walks away while Jyn looks out the window, and yet even though Cassian walked away and his back is facing the camera we hear an awkward piece of unnecessary exposition: “We find Saw, we find your father.” I think the scene would flow nicer if that line is removed. Plus it’s an awkward thing for Cassian to say after endearing small talk since he was tasked to kill his father if they found him.

I’d love to see R2 and C3P0 in the Tantive hall at the end. I remember there being a whole confusing debate about them on Yavin being a continuity error. Maybe just have them to the side as the troops run by.

Nah, I think that’d be a bit much.

I tried to use audio from the ST to have 3PO say “we’re” going to Scarif, but nothing I could find matched the tone of voice. Even so, they got scooped up to join the ship.

I’d just cut out the yavin appearance and only have them in the background on the tantive iv

Nice observations Burbin, especially the first one. That is a simple fix that makes more sense. Heck, from the beginning of the movie one he gives the order they shoot without hesitation … now I can’t unsee that issue with the DeathStar crew.

I admit for the current C3P0/R2D2 cameo, I did use Digmod’s approach to cut it out since I admit, although there can be an explanation about how they go from being on the base of Yavin, to boarding Tantive IV … which then eventually goes into Radus’ ship … but it’s more of a logical assumption than a reality that makes it more of a hole than anything.

So yeah, logically we can rationalize how they get from Point A to Point C, but it’s not depicted in the movie. Even if they said a simple line during the “transferring” of the plans to the disk someone says “Is the docked ship ready?/something on those lines” helps to bridge the logical step … audibly at least.

It’s somewhat similar to the Doctor & Ponda’s cameo (We see them in a city that then get’s destroyed … logic dictates they leave, but we don’t see them do that and just witness the utter destruction of it … so makes it more of a plot hole than not), but at least the droids are not a cheesy/shameless fan service cameo since seeing them makes sense in the story at this time.

I’ve been playing around with Rogue One with my own edit and I like it, but rethinking some changes based on your V2 and waiting for V3. Rogue One does not really need many drastic change asides from some clean up/removal of unnecessary things. (Cameos and reduction of whiplash at the beginning of the film)

Although your edit is fine as is, minus the clean up for V3, a simple but neat thing from some of RogueLeader’s idea (and buddies liked this) is about trust with the removal of Cassian and Draven’s conversation about “killing Galen” on his mission. By having that conversation removed and you just see them talking, it really adds more weight to Jynn’s comment about Trust going both ways and helps the audience stay in the same boat as Jynn, not knowing or seeing everything yet.

Granted the audience will get to know about the killing orders before she does, we get to stay in the boat of “the unknown” with Jynn. What was the conversation about? Who is the pilot? Is the Pilot really “on their side?”
