General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread — Page 123

Luke has heard of the Clone Wars, so he must of heard of the Jedi. With the passage of time, (and likely Imperial disinformation) the specifics could get lost. If Luke was home schooled, Owen might have also put some filters on the materials he was using.

Nobody in the cantina seems to act like they've never heard of a lightsaber before, although they may never have actually seen one used.

Also of note is Han's dismissive attitude towards Luke's training aboard the Falcon.

My reading of the film is that Anakin may have been a famous pilot (best starpilot in the galaxy) but he lost much of his fame when he decided to join the conservative monastic order which was the Jedi. This is just speculation, but I figure that Obi-wan could very well have first noticed Anakin's Force sensitivity by simply watching him fly his ship.

As for the Force, I suspect that it may be terminology used only by Jedi and Sith, and other religious orders have other names for this mystical energy field. Heck, if I was part of the Sith order, I would come up with some other name for it than "The Dark Side of the Force". What a mouthful, as well as implying that it is evil! The Emperor could simply be using that language on Luke because that's what the Jedi call it, and using the Sith names for things would just get confusing.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I've come to see Palpatine as a complete nihilist who believes that that the dark side is an all-consuming chaos which will eventually destroy everything in existence. In that context, I have no problem with Palpatine using such a term.

Of course, I don't recognize Palpatine as a Sith, either, so ...

I saw him more as an egotist. Who saw everything as corruptible and prone to chaos and corrupted it to impose his idea of order. I would see Palpatine as calling the Dark Side of the Force by the same name he called himself.

Are you implying that Palpatine wants to destroy everything in existence? If so, why does he want to destroy everything in existence?

I never saw him as merely a corrupt egoistic politician with force abilities. To me, Vader and Emperor always were an opposite of the Jedi in a sense that they were part of some force-centred organisation.

Hm. Yeah, I don't know that Palpatine wants to destroy everything specifically. He wants to rule it all with darkness, but I don't know that he wants to cease to exist.

No. I see Palpatine as someone who is so afraid of annihilation that he is willing to do the one thing he believes can save him from it -- embracing the dark side so fully that he eventually merges with the dark side itself, preserving himself through it. Everything else in existence -- the Jedi, the Sith, the Empire, the Rebellion,  etc. -- are either tools to be used in his quest for ascension or obstacles to removed from his path.

Interesting.

It still doesn't explain the pit of death in his Death Star office, is that his subconscious trying to rebel or something?

That's easy to explain -- PT/TCW Anakin and OT Vader exist in different universes. ;-)

Challenge: name all the friendships Anakin and Obi Wan had with other characters in the Prequels that were actually better than the alleged "friendship" between the two characters themselves.

Anakin and Padmé. *shudder*

Anakin and the giant horned lizard.

Anakin and Watto in AOTC.

Anakin and the giant bloated tick-shaped gerbil.

Obi-Wan and Dex.

Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon.

Obi-Wan and that clone who's name I can't be bothered to remember.

Obi-Wan and the giant feathered lizard.

Obi-Wan and Yoda.

Well, I think Anakin was using his Jedi mind tricks on Padme. It explains how they got married after he killed women and children.

I think Frink covered that angle already. ;)

But Jedi mind tricks only work on the weak-minded ...

Even if he didn't use mind tick on her, she must have been weak-minded if she picked such an intolerable jerk.

True, although she's putting the moves on him before that scene.

It's very important to refer to everything in the Star Wars Universe by their correct names.
