Force Awakens or EU: which do you choose?

In general, if YOU had to choose between one to be canon, which is it?

I think that depends on how anal you are about what qualifies as EU.
I personally prefer the EU (even though I enjoyed TFA), but having said that I completely ignore anything added post 1999 (e.g. TPM). Anything related to Darth Plageuis, midichlorians, universe shrinking, etc, etc, I can’t stand, but I still don’t think that the Disney EU will ever manage to live up to SW in the 90’s.
(PS, I saw SW for the first time in 2000, so I’m not just being nostalgic here.)
What’s canon or not doesn’t really bother me, I just like it if it’s good, even if it contradicts other stories. As far as I’m concerned the only true canon is the OT, the rest is just bonus material.
So in the future I’ll enjoy both TFA and stuff like the Thrawn trilogy, regardless of the fact that they contradict each other, and I’ll keep ignoring the PT of course.

The ST JUST started. Isn’t this a question for after Episode IX comes out?

Isn’t the EU so far-flung and contradictory that you can’t even compare it to a single movie, let alone the other two that aren’t out yet?

I ask from the position of someone who has zero interest or knowledge of the EU…except for the cereal box that explains how R2 piloted the escape capsule to land near Obi-Wan.

I will take an actual movie with actual Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher any day, no matter how good the EU was. (I jumped ship five books into NJO, for the record, but the vibe on the internet makes me think I didn’t miss much with Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi)

The EU lacked any clear direction and constantly undermined itself. By the time Jacen turned to the dark side, Palpatine had already been cloned a bunch of times and the Vong war had already happened. Chewie dies, and then two years later the character he died to save dies.

I actually ask this as someone who has put off reading the Thrawn trilogy for all these years (I own the books and know plot points and such, and always planned to read them through regardless). It’s interesting that in the end, there doesn’t seem to be as much “passion” for the EU as I once thought; that is, it seems in general that people are ready to disregard it for the most part.

So far the post-ROTJ EU I like (Dark Forces series video games) does not interfere/contradict with TFA, therefore I don’t need to choose between the two yet.

Unlike the rest of the post-ROTJ EU that (similarly to TFA) mainly leached on the major character from OT, Dark Forces series took its own direction and did not mess around with major OT characters.

“I don’t believe in the no-win scenario.”

Seriously though, I already consider a sizeable portion of the EU part of my personal canon – including the post-ROTJ stuff with Thrawn and Mara Jade and the Solo kids (not the godforsaken NJO/Legacy stuff, though); by default, TFA is rendered non-canon to me.

I’m currently reading the Thrawn trilogy and I’m enjoying it a lot so far, but I also enjoyed TFA. They contradict each other, but I still like both. They’re just fiction so I don’t really care if they don’t logically work together, as long as they’re entertaining and make sense plot-wise.

I feel like Star Wars belongs on the big screen. Books are fine and I quite enjoy some of them (like the aforementioned Thrawn Trilogy) but as long as they’re making good movies, I’ll default to that. If the movies start to suck again, I’ll probably make up some weird hodgepodge of personal headcanon. For now, TFA is canon in my mind.

My sequel EU is Thrawn trilogy and Dark Empire. At the moment the only thing getting in the way of that co-existing with the ST is the name and exact number of the Solo kids. I can edit that in my head. I flicked through Shattered Empire yesterday and that could coexist with what happens in the Thrawn trilogy with ease.
I have lots of later sequel EU books but I really can’t find the time to read them.
Not enough minutes in a lifetime for me.

I don’t know, because I haven’t read any of the books…

Seems completely computable to me.

I think he means there’s too much good Star Wars material out there to just watch the films. I can see how that doesn’t compute.

I don’t care about anything beyond the movies, so it’s perfectly computishable to me.

Damn that sucks dude. If you decide to hop into anything read the Darth Bane Trilogy from Drew Karpyshyn. At this point I can’t decide whether I prefer them or the OT. And I’m glad I actually have those type of options.

???

Ever since I got into the EU/nuEU my view of Star Wars has expanded exponentially. The films alone aren’t sufficient for me anymore but if it is for you that’s great.

But s/he said s/he doesn’t know, not that s/he doesn’t care. If s/he’s not familiar with the EU, then s/he should automatically default to TFA, yet s/he doesn’t. That’s what isn’t computing to me.
