I don’t think I’ve seen any of those videos before, and no, I can’t just magically figure out where a video might be where someone has an accent that sounds just like Nute’s. I know what stereotypical accents sound like, and that’s why I wanted a specific example, because as far as I knew, there wasn’t a single accent I’d heard before that sounded just like Nute’s. And not all of the videos you posted showed a comparable accent, but some were similar, so I was satisfied. That said, I’m going to have to keep my opinion on the Neimoidians with the guy that lived in Japan for 10 years. And somewhat that article I posted earlier.

I have never known someone from Japan who learned English as a second language, so I don’t have first hand knowledge, all I have is the stereotype. The argument was whether or not they had stereotypical Asian accents, which I didn’t hear in their accents. He said that the accent in the film sounded more like an actual Japanese accent, and he lived in Japan for 10 years, so I’m inclined to believe his judgement on what it sounds like. Though I still agree with several points from that article, like I said before.

So, while I don’t think Lucas consciously wanted to mock Asians with the Nemoidians, there’s a pretty good chance he was if since he was influenced by Kurosawa’s films (among others), then he was also in intimate contact with the dubbed versions of said films.

It is so painfully obvious that George lifted all these characterizations from the 1930s-40s era cinema he’s so fond of, which was absolutely loaded with unambiguous racist caricatures, and then applied them in a well-meaning but very poorly considered and tone-deaf way decades later in his own work. I don’t think Lucas had a racist agenda when he made the prequels, I think he was a kind of clueless sixty-something year old guy with no one to tell him how dated and awful this stuff was.
But it’s not racist, it’s Japanese!

I’m really curious now. Unfortunately, I can’t find any French clips online, so I’ll have to wait until I actually watch the movies.
What’s weird is there’s actually nothing of that in the Flash Gordon serials. There are unfortunate non PC moments here and there, but nothing like the other serials of the time. Most of the really racist caricatures crop up during World War II. The first Batman serial from 1943 is pretty jaw dropping in using the forced relocation of Japanese Americans as a plot point.
Ming starts out looking like a Fu Manchu sort of villain, but he doesn’t speak like one. By the time of the last Flash serial in 1940, Ming is dressed more like a facist dictator.

If so, then yeah, SW fans aren’t that bad; I certaintly don’t see a million shoddily altered traces of SW characters cluttering up the pages of deviantART, for example.
