“Tell me young Rey, what brings you out this far?”

“Well it’s all happened so fast for me…for the longest time I’ve waited on my home planet–”

“Tatooine, that I know.”

“No…Jakku, actually.”

“Oh, right. Well when I lived there it was called Tatooine.”

This will be in the film, I guarantee it.

“Tell me young Rey, what adventures have brought you out this far?”

“Well it’s all happened so fast for me… escaping aboard the Falcon, meeting with Han Solo and Chewie, losing my mentor/paternal figure, discovering I am Force sensitive, big battle station blowing, laser-saber fighting, etc., crazy stuff actually–”

“I know. I have seen it. You’ve made your Star Wars Trilogy rip off”

“No…it’s called “The Force Awakens”, it’s a sequel, actually.”

“Oh, right. Well when I used to be younger it was called a rip off. STARCRASH and things like that. Ep VI even was the official rip off back then. Nowadays people are so used to movies without imagination they get what they deserve… A sequel… Ok, what are you going to do now you’ve got to come up with new ideas in Ep VIII ? An AOTC rip off, serioulsy ?”

I don’t see how any of this has to do with the topic of the thread.

Seems as though the theory that Luke or Han is Rey’s father has been debunked.

Still could be Obi-Wan’s granddaughter though.

It’s entirely possible that in the early days of his exile on Tatooine, Obi Wan got hammered in the cantina one night, and got his Jedi freak on with someone.

“Rey’s Parents are not in Episode VII”

"Parents"

Doesn’t rule out that one of them is.

You’re looking too deep into it lol

I wouldn’t trust anything JJ “Not Khan” Abrams has to say on this matter.

You don’t think he’d learn from that?

I think he learned that lying is a great way to conceal spoilers.
And why not?

Also if Luke wasn’t he father, doesn’t that kind of render the reprisal of his “the force is strong in my family” monologue in the second trailer utterly meaningless?

No because Kylo Ren is of the Skywalker lineage. Also unless he says those exact words in one of the sequels the monologue means shitall.

It’s either complete farce or the dialogue was explicitly re edited to make it sound like Luke was taking to a direct descendant. In the original scene, having the force is a revelation to Leia, and Rey going through the same exact thing in this movie, I don’t know why we’d be expected to think otherwise about the meaning of those words. They’ve dropped more than what can be only described as hints that Luke’s the father, and if they back out now just to be less predictable, not only does the narrative for our main character make a hell of a lot less sense, but it also completely nullifies JJ’s entire ‘mystery box’ concept in terms of slowly letting the answers to these questions unwind over the course of the trilogy. I just hope Reys father isn’t a sentient, ancient puff of smoke in the end.

there’s been an update on JJ saying that Rey’s parents weren’t in episode VII:
quote from Abrams:

“What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world,” Abrams said.

http://www.ew.com/article/2016/04/15/star-wars-force-awakens-jj-abrams-rey-parents?xid=entertainment-weekly_socialflow_twitter

So the option is still on the table. I for one really hope she is Luke’s daughter.

“What I meant was it is painfully obvious that Luke is the father, but being the person I am I desperately want that to be a revelation to the audience because mystery box. Even if it doesn’t better the narrative at all to instead just directly tell the audience at he end of the first movie.”

JJ should just tell people it’s in Rian’s hands now and save himself from any more sensationalized headlines. Early ‘leaks’ had said the movie ended with Rey reaching an abandoned temple and finding Luke inside, who immediately told her that he was her father. I suspect the only reason it didn’t happen in the final draft of the story was because JJ thought a silent Luke would’ve made it all the more powerful of an ending.

Confirmation that Episode VIII will at least feel somewhat different?

Somewhat?

"[Rian Johnson] is going to make some weird thing," Kasdan said. "If you’ve seen Rian’s work, you know it’s not going be like anything that’s ever been in ‘Star Wars.’"

"I would agree with [Kasdan]," said Isaac. "Rian is definitely going to places and investigating things that haven’t really been done in the ‘Star Wars’ universe. For me, it’s so fun getting to explore different things that I wouldn’t have expected in this universe."

It sound like they’re going to do some pretty weird stuff to me, which I wholeheartedly approve of.

I really do doubt that we’ll get the ESB remake that a lot of people are fearing. Sure, I doubt they’ll be able to avoid some similarities, but I doubt we’ll be getting another remake-type plot.

Also, I don’t know if this has been brought up, but according to Wookieepedia Johnson screened the films Twelve O’Clock High and Letter Never Sent to the cast/crew to prepare them for the film.
I haven’t personally seen ether film, but they seem like somewhat odd choices for inspiration for a SW film. It does make me even more intrigued about what ep. VIII is going to be like though.

They got Wookiee hugs! It’s good to be the future king! 😉

I wonder if BB-8 is totally remote controlled now, as he was sort of a rod puppet in TFA.

Right, I’d forgotten about that. I remembered Kurosawa and Flash Gordon (plus a lot of other sci-fi stories). I’m actually exited to see that a new SW film will be based on classic movies again, rather than just other SW films. Sure, Abrams mentioned having watched Kurosawa’s High and Low as well as some Westerns (not too far from what inspired ANH), but I’m curious to see what Johnson manages to get out of a Soviet drama from the 60’s in relation to a Star Wars film.

They used both RC and “rod puppetry” in TFA did they not?

He was in TFA. I believe he was piloting an X-Wing…
