The Monkey King - Uproar In heaven (1965) Restoration/Preservation Project
Nezha Conquers the Dragon King (1979) BBC 1.66:1 & Theatrical 2.35:1 preservations
these are pictures and not film.
The kino restoration is the longest known cut to still exist.
“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.
I read about this yesterday on The Digital Bits. I hope that the planned 2009 release will be the full version restored.
form thedigitalbits.com:
"All right... we've got one last post for you today, because this just couldn't wait until Monday. We've just heard back from our friends over at Kino International. The good news is that they have officially confirmed that the newly-discovered footage from Fritz Lang's original version of Metropolis (which we mentioned yesterday) WILL be a part of the forthcoming special edition Blu-ray Disc release in 2009. What's more, the new special edition will be released on standard DVD format as well on the same day. Watch for more details on this sure-to-be-amazing release in the weeks and months ahead."

Having though back on the Moroder fan-edit someone wanted to do with using Kino's visuals to sync the soundtrack to, I sorta wonder how much more interesting it could be to try syncing it up to the lost footage too? That would be bitchin' if attempted!
I saw this news on thedigitalbits earlier today, and I think this is one of the most amazing pieces of news in cinema history! All my life the only Metropolis I've ever been able to see has been incomplete, and now this treasure of historical significance, worthy of excavation by Indiana Jones, has been uncovered after 80 years of being thought lost forever. This is just awesome.
It would also be amazingly cool if other lost prints (like the complete version of London After Midnight, for instance) turned up like this during our lifetime.
Now try to imagine in the year 2027 (80 years from 1977), this headline:
"EXCITING news: lost "STAR WARS" original uncut negative FOUND!!!!!!!!!"
Yeah, right. We can only dream... ;)

.......until now. Those pictures have not been seen since 1926 because the footage was lost. Those stills come directly from the lost footage.

I prefer the Moroder soundtrack over all others, too. It's the first version of the movie I ever saw (my Mom took me into NYC to see it in 1984). So, I'd like to see the Moroder soundtrack applied to this new restored version as well.
I can't believe we're talking about this! I never thought this would happen. :-)
reave, thanks for the info about the blu-ray/DVD release. I'm so thrilled the scenes will be included.
Evidently, about 23 minutes of footage has been discovered. There is still one scene missing (a monk in the cathedral), but maybe that scene can be filled in with stills or something.
Anyhow, here's a link to some more photos of the newly discovered footage:
Damn, I just posted this in "Off Topic" without looking in here.
I probably should have posted it there, but I thought it was kind of preservation-related.

Given news of this new footage, I kinda feels it devalued what one person tried to do a quarter century ago with what he had access to. It would be neat to see a 25th Anniversary edition next year that would essentially update the presentation based on the new footage with what could be done with the soundtrack to match it accordingly.

When the SciFi channel went on the air in 1992, it opened with the first "FTL Newsfeed", a series of newsreports from the far future, about the discovery of a complete print of the then 200 year old classic film Star Wars. This was a clever intro for showing the actual film that first night. :)
Where were you in '77?
To bad the o-neg was destroyed in 1997 to create the special edition.
More metropolis footage is a welcome find and i will buy the next dvd edition from kino as i'm sure my public library will as well.
Kino also put out restored versions of siegfried and kriemhildes revenge by Fritz Lang. I believe they also have a version of his murder movie M.
Kino rules they put out the definitive douglas fairbanks sr. editions with the tri strip technicolor, as well as the restored nosferatu.

Oh, the Kino-restored Nosferatu ... I had the pleasure of seeing that at the Chicago Music Box Theatre (fantastic theatre, saw the "Blade Runner" Final Cut there as well) with live organ music. It was a great cinematic experience everyone should have the pleasure of seeing. I think they do it every Halloween.

Criterion has released M. Go for the more current re-release depicted in the image following:
Great news indeed! I know the footage will be restored for the DVD and Blu-ray. Here's hoping Kino will also release more Buster Keaton, Douglas Fairbanks Sr., Nosferatu, Der Golem and other films under their banner.

Oops! That should be 2057.
Obviously it's been a long time since I attempted to do math. Nowadays we have computers for that sort of thing. ;)

FOOTAGE!
Awesome!
And what's with the thread name change? The same thing happened to the thread I'd made in "Off Topic," but my subject had been "Lost 'Metropolis' Footage Found" and it was changed to "Lost" without my doing so ...
I just fixed it- I have no idea what happened. One of those "bugs" I guess. :-)
Quotes in thread titles appear to be causing problems, according to one of the bug report forums.

The Moroder version is cut differently and it built to certain beats that actually make it advantageous to be a bit shorter (like a music video). I don't know if it would work the same way if it were two and a half hours. It's also a different film, made from different takes and shots are compiled differently. I do have almost the complete Moroder catalog, and some of it might be useful in an attempt. Too much of it is dance music, though.
I am still working on the Moroder restoration fan edit and it's getting closer to completion of the editing. When the Blu-Ray comes out, If I can figure out how to rip it, I'll already have a template for how to cut it to Moroder's version.
