Calling all Brits, calling all Brits!

So out of curiosity, where is the British Father Christmas from?  I keep reading that Father Christmas is from Lapland, Finland, but is that just a Finnish tradition, or is that how he seen in the UK as well?  Obviously over the years, Father Christmas and Santa Claus traditions have conflated to be virtually identical, but is this something that still distinguishes him?

better question: why are you posting this now instead of after Thanksgiving?

Why must one only discuss Santa in December?

And darth_ender, why, WHY did you not extend the spoiler warning to me?! :'(

'Cuz it's my thread and I love Christmas and I see no reason why we need to put limitations on when we can talk about Christmas stuff...

...especially when what I'm doing is advance preparation. ;)

There, there now.  Ask the Departed Decurion about it.  And while you're at it, you can ask him where babies come from ;)

But I see a reason.  I want to keep Christmas special.  It can't be special if it is year round as it is starting to be.   I saw a Hallmark store  selling Christmas ornaments in July!  They will start playing Christmas music in couple weeks.   The Hallmark channel is advertising that they will start showing Christmas movies on Oct 31, Halloween!   The season starts earlier and earlier each year.  It is getting more and more ridiculous.  Sometimes I almost get sick of Christmas before Dec 25th, because everyone is going so Christmas crazy since October.    I want to keep it special and I don't want to get to the point of getting sick of it.   The only way to do is to keep it contained to the Christmas season itself.  That means NOTHING CHRISTMAS UNTIL AFTER THANKSGIVING!!!!!!!!!

There is excess in its being celebrated too early but there is also excess in shunning it till post Thanksgiving. I am preparing a multicultural Christmas thing for my kids and want it to be ready in time for December, hence the early question. We don't have to get too into the spirit yet, but I see nothing wrong with some discussion early on.

There's a collector market for those Hallmark ornaments. They've been doing the summer release thing for quite some time. Ever since the first Star Trek ornament they did in the 90's, it gets a little crazy with those. And they do Star Wars too.

Showing Xmas movies on Halloween is pushing it though. (Unless it's The Nightmare Before Christmas.) I was pretty horrified when the all music channel on my cable system didn't start playing Halloween music until Oct. 15th and went right to Christmas on midnight of the 31st. They didn't stop playing holiday tunes until February!

The only thing that takes the sting out of the holidays is that Krampus is becoming a thing in the U.S. There are two Krampus movies coming out, and one has William Shatner in it. ;)

there is?  You do realize that it still leaves about a month in which to celebrate Christmas, right?  Surely that is long, isn't it?

two Krampus movies?  I saw ads for one of them, but I hadn't heard about the 2nd one.

This forum actually has a really neat feature you could try.  It's called "Don't click on the thread you don't want to read."  If you use that feature, you won't be offended by early Christmas talk.

Santa/Father Christmas is not British.

He lives at the North Pole, off the coast of Greenland, but has an office and main post office in Lapland (a region in northern Finland).

Santa/Father Christmas is not British.

But I thought the British referred to the guy that we Americans call Santa, as Father Christmas?

Yep, we Brits call the big guy Father Christmas and Santa Claus.

I talk about, plan for, and celebrate Halloween pretty much everyday all year long and October 31st is still the most wonderful time of the year for me.
Ender can talk about and celebrate his favorite day all he wants, anytime he wants.

Freedoms, yo!

(But we should only talk about Star Wars in May, as that's when the movie was released.)
